Starting work at the ], Middleton became prominent in the ], editing its magazine. He became MP for ] from 1922 to 1924, and was MP again from 1929 to 1931.<ref name=TimesObit>'Sir G. Middleton: The Ecclesiastical Commission', '']'', 26 October 1938</ref>

In 1931 he replaced Sir ] as First Church Estate Commissioner. He was knighted in 1935.<ref name=TimesObit/>
