Battle of the Somme, 1916

Greetings Woogie, do you know of any analyses of losses in the battle that take into account the various forms of unreliability of the casualty counts and come up with the nearest thing to reliable numbers? Ta.Keith-264 (talk) 09:42, 3 May 2009 (UTC) Thanks, I've got the Official History for 1916 vol:2 with Edmonds' figures (680,000 German losses!) and I've got various secondary sources which vary the figures according to whether they're pre- or anti- Haig. Is there an online source for the WO report?Ta.Keith-264 (talk) 12:13, 3 May 2009 (UTC) If you've got what you think are the most reliable losses info for the British, French and German armies on the Somme and the sources I'd be obliged. Thanks.Keith-264 (talk) 13:05, 3 May 2009 (UTC) Exellent thanks. Are the German figures calculated on the same criteria or are they adapted so they refer to the same thing as the British - Edmonds adds a third to the Reichsarchiv figure because of a different formula used by the Germans.Keith-264 (talk) 17:33, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

I've been interested of late because I got the Official History (Vol 2) and compared the figures in that with those on the Wiki Somme page.Keith-264 (talk) 17:35, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

I don't know about my ancestors but I do find myself at war memorials hoping not to see 'Crosby' on them.Keith-264 (talk) 18:32, 3 May 2009 (UTC) Apparently they are British and Australians killed at Fromelles.Keith-264 (talk) 14:04, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Accidental

I don't see how I did anything of the sort. All I did was change the heading from "Indonesia" to "Dutch East Indies" and move the section in alphabetical order. john k (talk) 22:40, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
