Jamie Doran is a British documentary filmmaker. His films have won several awards, including the Gold Special Jury Award for Afghan Massacre: Convoy of Death at Worldfest 2004, and the World Gold Medal for The Need for Speed at the New York Festivals.
Filmography
Doran has directed and produced numerous documentaries, including:
- Afghan Massacre: Convoy of Death or Massacre at Mazar - People presented as eyewitnesses claim that U.S. military and CIA agents were present when Northern Alliance fighters allegedly massacred up to three thousand Taliban fighters who surrendered after the battle of Mazar-i-Sharif in Afghanistan in November, 2001. Afghan Massacre: the Convoy of Death was the first film to detail this event. It was subsequently followed up by numerous news media outlets including Le Monde Diplomatique, the Guardian, Newsweek, the Independent, and most recently, the New York Times. Doran's claims were backed up by leading international human rights lawyer, Andrew McEntee, who reviewed evidence held by Doran and other sources, including the United Nations. Boston based NGO, Physicians for Human Rights, had earlier sent a three person fact-finding delegation to excavate part of the site. They produced a report which confirmed the existence of mass graves. The claims were also backed by a leaked United Nations memo. US President Obama announced on July 12, 2009, that he had ordered his national security team to investigate.
- The Need for Speed - Alleges that The Pentagon gives performance enhancing drugs to its soldiers and airmen, and that this has resulted in the deaths of military personnel and civilians. Interviewees include former Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force, General Merrill 'Tony' McPeak. The BBC also reported on this story in a 2003 article.
- Guinea Pig Kids - Portrayed standard medical care of Black and Hispanic HIV-positive children at the Incarnation Children's Center in New York as "toxic experiments" without the consent of guardians or relatives. The BBC partly upheld complaints that this documentary breached editorial guidelines on accuracy and impartiality, acknowledging that it made false claims and was biased towards the views of AIDS denialists..
- Jimmy Johnstone: Lord of the Wing - On Jimmy 'Jinky' Johnstone, a Celtic and Scotland football hero of the '60s and '70s who struggled with motor neurone disease.
- Starman - A sixty-minute biographical film for BBC Television of Yuri Gagarin, the first human in space. Doran also co-wrote a book on Gagarin with the popular science writer, Piers Bizony.
- The Android Prophecy - A documentary history of robots in cinema that draws dark conclusions about the future of mankind. Featuring contributions from Arthur C Clarke, Steven Spielberg and Ridley Scott.
- Sexpionage - The story of young women who were forced by the KGB to seduce foreign military personnel, businessmen and diplomats in order to elicit secrets from them.
