The group's debut album, '']'' was released the following year. While the second single, "]" reached #3 on the ], however it was their third single, "]" that became their first charting single in the United States. '']'' was released in February 1985. The single, "]" became the group's first major hit in North America, peaking at #1 on the ] and the next single, "]" followed similar suit. Their third studio album, '']'' was released on ] in 1989. Its lead single, "]" reached the Top 5 in the United Kingdom and also followed similar success in the United States. "]," a collaboration with ] was a minor international hit, as was, "]" and "]."

Though not formally released by Tears for Fears, this was originally the B-side to "Advice for the Young at Heart" which was then remixed by Fluke and released as a single by TFF's record company in the UK and simply credited as "Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams".
