Basketball Wives is a reality television series that premiered on the VH1 cable television network on April 11, 2010. Created by production company Shed Media US, the series follows the lives of a group of women who have all been somehow romantically linked to professional basketball players. The show is filmed in Miami, Florida. Season three premiered on May 30, 2011. On June 20, 2011 it was announced that a spinoff based in L.A. was in the works and would feature former castmember Gloria Govan.

The fourth season of the show is currently airing and consists of 15 episodes.

Production

The first season made its debut April 11, 2010 and start off at 30 minutes per episode. The second season premiered with a new cast member, Tami Roman, on December 12, 2010. The episodes were also extended from 30 minutes to an hour. The third season premiered on May 30, 2011 and with a new cast member added to the show, Meeka Claxton. The fourth season premiered on February 20, 2012 at its original time 8/7c with two new cast members, Kenya Bell and Kesha Nichols. Meeka Claxton did not return the following season.

  • Tami Roman (season 2 - ) Tami Roman joined the cast of Basketball Wives during Season 2. Shortly after she appeared on The Real World: Los Angeles, Tami dated and married NBA player Kenny Anderson in 1994. In Season 2, Tami and Kenny tried to resolve their problems, and he attempted to have a relationship with his estranged daughters. Currently, Tami works as an actress, with a string of acting credits under her belt, along with producing several projects. She also works with her favorite non-profit "Project Girl Performance Collective" that provides a safe space to young girls to write and perform their own work, to instill self-esteem in the next generation of women.

Former cast members

  • Gloria Govan (season 1, recurring season 2) was a regular in season 1, but only made a few appearances, in season 2, and was not given star billing in the second season because of her move to Los Angeles. She is now a cast member in the Los Angeles spinoff.

Supporting cast members

  • Eric Williams is a retired NBA player and the ex-husband of Jennifer. Their marriage was tumultuous from the start with allegations of infidelity on both sides.
  • Ashley Walker (season 2 — ) is the girlfriend of former basketball player Rafer Alston and a friend of Royce and Suzie's. Jennifer dislikes her out of loyalty to an unidentified friend who was formerly engaged to Rafer.
  • Kim Russell and Juli Richmond (season 2), wives of retired "NBAers" Bryon Russell and Mitch Richmond, respectively, were also cast for Season 2; however, their appearances were mostly insignificant and they did not receive top billing. They are primarily friends of Shaunie.

The show premiered alongside the new series Brandy and Ray J: A Family Business and What Chilli Wants averaging a 1.0 in the 18-49 demo, reaching 1.6 million total viewers. Basketball Wives Season 2 finale bought in 2.281 million viewers. Basketball Wives Season 3 premiered, attracting 1.828 million viewers. Episode 8, which featured the fight between Tami and Meeka brought in 2.327 million viewers in the initial 8 PM EST airing, one of the highest rated episode's of Season 3. Taking the spot was part 2 of the Basketball Wives reunion, which took in 2.873 million viewers on the premiere. This is the highest viewed episode in Basketball Wives history.
