The 1952 Open Championship was a golf tournament played at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, England. South Africa's Bobby Locke and Australian Peter Thomson staged the first of their many great battles, with Locke prevailing by one-stroke to win his third Open Championship title in four years.

After 36-holes 1947 Open champion Fred Daly had built a four-stroke lead with rounds of 67-69. Bobby Locke was in 2nd place after rounds of 69-71. Locke, however, almost never made it for the final two rounds. His clubs were locked in the trunk of his car, and when he went to retrieve them on the morning of the final day he found that the garage where his car was parked was locked. Luckily, a passing milkman knew where the garage owner lived and took Locke to retrieve the key. He arrived at the course just in time to change his shoes and walk straight to the 1st tee. He followed with rounds of 74-73 to overtake Daly, who struggled with rounds of 77-76 and finished in 3rd place, two-shots back. Peter Thomson closed with a round of 70 to finish a shot back of Locke.

This win was Locke's third Open title, and he would win a fourth in 1957. Thomson, meanwhile, went on to win five titles, with the first coming two years later, when he defeated Locke by a single stroke.
