== Double checking U2 quote ==

I'm working on '']'' and in the course of reading an archived version of the ''Rolling Stone'' article , I was unable to find a quote that the ] and ''The Joshua Tree'' articles have long had attributed to this article. The quote in question is the following:

"The wild beauty, cultural richness, spiritual vacancy and ferocious violence of America are explored to compelling effect in virtually every aspect of The Joshua Tree—in the title and the cover art, the blues and country borrowings evident in the music ... Indeed, Bono says that 'dismantling the mythology of America' is an important part of The Joshua Tree's artistic objective."

If you have archives to look through, can you double-check if this quote indeed comes from this article? Is it possible it came from another DeCurtis article in March titled "U2 releases The Joshua Tree"? ] (] &bull; ]) 22:34, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

Regarding undo of Timor Leste-->Back to East Timor. Figured as much. Only recently read the East Timor discussion. A bit flabbergasted on why the decision is to keep East Timor and seriously questioning the wisdom behind it. Personally, I don't have a problem with it, since it still implies that Timor Leste doesn't exist and still the 27th province of Indonesia :p. Feel sorry about the chaps in Timor Leste though. First we (Indonesians) burn their land to a crisp then wikipedia obviously refuses to identify their official state country name (e.g. My name is Amir now, I changed it legally. Misplaced Pages: No, Amir isn't an English name. You're still Bob :p). Unfortunately, there isn't an English name for Timor Leste and East Timor isn't it (source: Timor Leste official translated English constitution), or else we would be using that instead. Scholars would probably roll their eyes over this, but no biggie. Thanks. == Re: NSONGS and "Slug" ==

The funny thing about NSONG is that it doesn't even say that songs with awards, covers, etc. are notable; just that they are ''probably'' notable. My reading on it is based on this part: "''Notability aside, a separate article on a song is only appropriate when there is enough verifiable material to warrant a reasonably detailed article; articles unlikely ever to grow beyond stubs should be merged to articles about an artist or album.''" This has always been my argument for having "Slug" as a separate article, and a merge discussion at ] midway last year affirmed that. I certainly feel that there is enough verifiable material that has led to a "reasonably" detailed article. Either way, I think we can . ] <small>(], ])</small> 23:00, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
: might be one of the changes (though granted it was talking about unreleased material); the edit summary said "clarify", but I think that the meaning of the sentence was changed pretty dramatically. Will look to see if there are other changes, but it's a bit slow going.
:Also, the very first sentence says "''All articles on albums, singles or songs must meet the basic criteria at the notability guidelines, with significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject.''" From my reading of that, so long as the article meets ] it should be fine; NSONG is more of an addition that provides specific examples of how notability can be determined for music, but those examples aren't necessarily all encompassing. ] <small>(], ])</small> 05:39, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
::If it comes down to a fight over interpreting the NSONGS then I'd argue ] - ie, ignore rules that don't help the encyclopedia. There is no way deleting this article (and others in the same boat) is going to improve wikipedia. --] (]) 06:12, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

I don't think my edit that you reverted was troll feeding - even inadvertently. While Shah 88 is unable to edit his/her user page, I don't think other editors should do so. The symbols there may be objectionable to some people but taking advantage of another editor's talk page block to remove them is, IMO, the more disruptive move. I'm going to restore the images again, not because I hold any brief to protect Shah 88, but because it's important we play by the rules. ==Hi again==

Okay, if you don't want to get involved, fair enough, but for the record, I would like to point out that I have not taken part in "squabbles" over whose shots are better etc. If you had nothing else to do and you looked at Adam's messages, you would see that he has often indulged in personal attacks on me and I have not responded. If you looked at his contributions, you would see there have been many times when he has deleted my pix, but I have not retaliated. He criticises others for putting unnecessary pix in articles, but he has been one of the worst offenders. So, I've had my say and I won't bother you with the issue anymore.
] (]) 08:31, 14 February 2011 (UTC)
::In response to the above, if your photos are being removed it is not a personal attack against you it is because I am trying to clean up the article, this you do not seem to understand. Once the an article has been cleaned up of all these excessive photos with the galleries removed and the remainder integrated with the article text, the article looks much better. When I add pics to an article I may add 1 to 4 at most (recently) whereas at one stage you and another party were adding 30 to 40 poor quality photos to certain articles. As for the messages they were all responses to your personal attacks. I won't say any more because I know this message will be deleted shortly. ] (])

== Daylight saving time ==

Reading infobox in article ], I can see something inside parentheses ...

Time zone various (]+7 to +9)

- Summer (DST) not observed (])

The information above will make abiguous and inconsistent. Sure Indonesia does not observe daylight saving time, but look at the parentheses, as if Indonesia be truly using ] (same as London), and not using ]+7, ]+8, or ]+9.

We can compare it with
* ] - Summer (DST) not observed (]+9)
* ] - Summer (DST) not observed (]+5:30)
* ] - Summer (DST) not observed (]+1)
* ] - Summer (DST) Not observed (]+1)

Should information about DST in ] follows your opinion (and parallel with that --all other typical countries too), or otherwise? Thanks :)

:You say the above is (i) ambiguous, and (ii) it is inconsistent. SO looking at these two points:
:(i) ambiguous: not at all. Indonesia has three time zones and they are stated. It does not use daylight saving time and this is stated. Nothing more needs to be said. (Unnecessarily) restating the three time zones actually increases ambiguity. Kok? Why are the numbers their twice?
:(ii) Inconsistency: I assume you mean inconsistency with other articles. Why should we repeat the problems of other wikpedia pages here? Ie, the country examples you provide suffer the same problem in (i). Why transfer the problem to the Indonesia page too?

==Consolidation of references==
With the rp template. So one can search for, and fix, the miryad broken references in the Indonesia articles. Clear enough?

— ] (]) 01:30, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

: The Indonesian articles have many references pointing to non-existing edition years, or to texts not mentioned in the references sections, and with inconsistent formatting. By using the rp template, which you should have looked into first thing, we consolidate references so the note lists become more manageable, the references become more consistent, and researching them becomes feasible.

: It is OK for me to stop now as it is quite late now, but you really should have researched before requesting anything.

— ] (]) 01:43, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

:: Have you never seen ]? And you researched it but failed to type ? I wonder.

:: Just look at the notes. Each ‘name (year)’ note must mention a work in the references list. This is quite often not the case, showing shoddy copying around of text without references. Sometimes the author will have a different work listed; sometimes, the work is listed but as some other edition; sometimes, the author is not even listed. As these references are quite plentiful, sometimes a dozen or more in an article, it is more practical to first consolidate them with Template:Rp first, and then research and fix.

:: Ugliness is irrelevant, precision is paramount.

However, I've poked around, and it is clear that ] is not a place where you get judged by your peers, it is a place where an admin '''makes a ruling based on community feedback'''. == ]. and your message at ] ==

Hi Merbabu,

With the article at ], I have taken on the GA review for it, but am just doing some gnoming before I take it formally to review. Your remark, "please do add POV tags to your ''own'' edits especially when they are mid-sentance" I don't quite understand - I am trying to get ''rid of'' what seems to me POV, but you are quite right that if there are things I have inadvertently introduced which to yours or others' eyes are POV, then quite right for them to be marked so, and, better, to be removed or changed so they are not. But this is very much a first pass for me, when I do a Ga review I tend to take BOLD and do a lot of gnoming that I consider uncontroversial, before taking it to the GA review formally for those bits I consider might be.

I can only assure you of my good faith, as you implicitly have assured me of yours, thank you sincerely for your look-see over this, and after a nother day or so of gnoming I will write up the formal review. I am not trying to subvert process here, quite the opposite, it seems that some GA reviewers note every jot and tittle, which is fine, and some like me kinda get stuck in and do lots of the minor edits themselves. I can see this might seem not to make sense because it is done rather "unofficially", but in practice it saves the article proposer to wade through hundreds of minor points, or as the White Knight (was it?) says in Alice in Wonderland, the quickest way to explain it is to do it.

So please forgive me my errors and feel free to revert anything that is outright ridiculous or nonsense, I won't be at all offended, but I hope we will make the article better, although I admit I have made some errors. As for Preview, I do know that, but in particular, I miss typing slips at the preview too, and for some things like references, Preview doesn't work very well (yes one can put {{tlc|reflist}} at the bottom of the section for preview, but still it can be hard when there are multiple references from different sections etc.) So please do accept my good faith that I am trying my best, and not always succeeding.

Sincerely ] (]) 06:26, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

==Bondi Beach photograph==

I wanted to suggest that you reconsider your removal of the photograph in the Bondi Beach article, it is the only shot that shows the beach from the actual beach level looking north. While there are other pictures they are long shots that frame the actual area surrounding the beach, and its notable buildings and historical changes. The picture from beach level was in the section that describes the size of the beach and other characteristics. In fact it is taken from where the celebrated south end rip tends to reside and is looking north, perhaps a better caption to point out the context? Thanks! ] (]) 21:05, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

== ALP talk ==

Hi Merbabu,

I am not sure if you have any opinions on the recent changes to the ] article. To summarise, editor Timeshift has greatly expanded the article's history section. No problem in that, but he is simultaneously pushing out alot of historical context and reverting virtually all attempts to balance out his text. My personal view is that the article's history section should be essentially chronological, and include major figures, major reforms, historical context, major political issues faced - rather than the current structure which is separated into three sections: "History"; "Notable Labor Governments" (which Timeshift essentially insists can only include "Acts" passed by the ALP); and "Historical ALP splits". This is all business as usual on wikipedia, and I am sure the end result will be better than the starting point. But the problem is that he has now taken to altering my subject heading on the talk page, which identifies the section as discussing his recent expansion. I headed my comments: "ALP according to Timeshift". He is changing it to say "Content Dispute". This seems to me to be a pretty serious breach of wikipedia rules, as he is altering my comments on a talk page and diluting the specific topic of the thread? I have reverted it to the original title once and he is now "warning" me not to revert it again. As a senior editor, could you offer me any advice, or perhaps review this specific change of my text on a talk page and offer opinion in the relevant talk section? ] (]) 12:23, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi Merbabu! I see you've been doing lots of great work, but I dont quite understand : do you have some other plan for incorporating the film which should be of interest to readers on the topic, or am I missing something else altogether? Cheers, ] (]) 05:06, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
:What's not to understand? The 65/66 killings article may be important to the documentary article (indeed, it’s what the documentary is about), but the documentary has no importance to the historical events.
:As far as I can see, the new article on the documentary is based on a single source (the producer’s) and is written by the film’s producers. There are no secondary sources attesting to the film’s notability. So the first question is do we even need this article? My judgement call was to give it the benefit of the doubt and I removed the speedy delete tag (based on the obvious COI concerns) and I did it a little editing to make it less of an advertisement. However, I must admit my removal of the speedy delete tag was perhaps not done so much based on wikipedia policy, but based on my own personal curiousness about this apparent new film (You could say I’m interested in the topic being the creator and main contributor to the killings article). So already there is a bit of skating on thin ice going on here.
:The producer then inserted an advertisement for the film in the Impact section of the 65-66 Killings article. The main impact of the killings was the decimation of the third largest communist part in the world, and the ultimate removal of founding President Sukarno’s autocratic and chaotic left-leaning regime with President Suharto’s autocratic and strong right-leaning government resulting in major changes to Indonesia for the next 30 odd years. The second impact was, we are meant to believe, is this film? Huh? In what way has this film had an impact? It’s not even the first film on the topic as the producers would have us believe.
:Would readers be “interested”? Possibly, possibly not. But we shouldn’t care as the criteria for inclusion is notability/relevance, not whether something is deemed interesting and wikipedia is ].
:I don’t know what you mean by “incorporating the film”. It’s already got it’s own little <s>advertisement.</s>, oops, article. What else do you suggest? regards --] (]) 05:32, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
::OK, we're in agreement about the ice-skating, and obvious COI is a different issue than whether something is 'about' or 'part of' the topic. -Hello, I created the 40 Years of Silence wiki and inserted information on the film on the Indonesian Killings of 1965-1966 wiki. I'm aware I put the film info in the wrong area by placing it in "impact" section of the Indonesia killings of 1965-6 wiki page. I'm new to Misplaced Pages and am in the learning process right now and am aware of the COI/NPOV concerns with the ]. I would appreciate other editors assistance in removing/editing anything to ensure there is an NPOV or deleting it if it's not Misplaced Pages material. On another note, to make all documentaries and films related to the Indonesia 1965 mass-killings neutral, what if a separate category such as "Popular Culture" or "Media Resources" such as this page on the ]. Some other films on the events of 1965 in Indonesia are , Syarikat's "", , and by Lexy Rambadetta. I think it would be beneficial to have a collection of media resources available to Wikipedians, such as films, books, music, and performances on the Indonesia 1965-6 mass-killings page. Thanka for everyone's patience and assistance.--] (]) 21:41, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

== Aceh -- removing the list of governors ==

I'm disappointed that you removed the list of Acehnese governors from the Aceh page. It seems unnecessary and I went to some trouble to check out the list. I presume the suggestion is that there should be references provided. The problem is that the references are scattered over various sources and it seems excessively scholastic to add lots of footnotes at the bottom when, essentially, the facts are not really under challenge. In addition, most of the references are to Indonesian-language sources and, in the past, when I have posted Indonesian-language references, these have been removed by some Wikipedians. This approach (of removing Indonesian-language references) is a major problem for Indonesian articles on Misplaced Pages because, often, the main source for Indonesian issues is Indonesian-language references. ] (]) 01:42, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
:no need to presume. It's very clear. Do not add material without references. That's basic Misplaced Pages policy. --] (]) 01:58, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
:And is such a list that relevant or useful? --] (]) 02:03, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

::Here are two points in reply (because Merbabu has raised two separate issues). (1) NEED FOR REFERENCES. No, I don't quite agree. The policy is not as black and white as this. Any discussion of references (anywhere, in any book, or academic journal) needs to be balanced against considerations such as excessive scholasticism and, in any case, the commonsense need for references. I have written dozens of articles for numerous academic journals (and have been the editor of a well-known journal about Indonesian affairs). One doesn't footnote every single sentence. Nobody does. In any case, several of the governors I listed were referenced across to Misplaced Pages pages and yet these were removed as well. I will now need to spend time going back to check all the references for the governors one-by-one. This is a pity. But the listing of governors is quite important for historical purposes. I am not a historian but for those who wish to look into Acehnese recent history, it is a pity to lose the list of governors. Lists of people like this are a very useful starting point for further work. (2) USEFUL? This is seems to be a difference point and is surely a matter of opinion? I'd argue that a list of governors is very useful indeed. If one wants, for example, to dig back into events in Aceh over past decades, it's pretty helpful to chase up references to governors because this, in turn, leads on to articles about the governors (and, more important, their policies), speeches, references to meetings and conferences, and so on. This sort of thing gets to the meat of policy and governance. There is also a lot of useful material surrounding how (and why) the governors where chosen, and by whom. There is, for example, a recent book about Governor Mustafa Abubakar (governor, 2006) which is a very valuable account of the processes of governance in Aceh (referenced on the Misplaced Pages page for him).] (]) 02:20, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
:::If you can show me where it says that verifiability and referencing isn't required on wikipedia, I'd be happy to see it. In the meantime, I'm considering the issue closed. I tagged the section in May, you worked on the article in June, and now you object when I remove it in July.
:::If wikipedia had "meat of policy and governance" then that would be great. But it doesn't, and I don't see how a list of 7 names is going to provide that. I note that there is no similar list in ], ], or ]. I did not look at other prominent state/city/province articles so that's says that's 3 out of 3. --] (]) 03:15, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

::::Well, we don't seem to be making much progress, do we? Let's agree to disagree. Thanks for your comments.] (]) 03:25, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
:::::No worries. --] (]) 03:26, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

== Changes to Buol Regency page ==

I've just noticed that you've removed the entry I put on the Buol Regency page. I'm fairly unhappy about this. Your earlier changes to my entries on the Aceh page some time ago (which I am also unhappy about) were made, first, on the basis that references were not provided. Then, shortly afterwards, you added the suggestion that the information was not useful anyway. As I noted at the time, these were two quite different issues (and I happened to disagree with both of them). And now you've removed the information (which I believe is quite important) from the Buol Regency page. You've removed this entry because apparently you didn't think it was useful. Please forgive me for saying so, but you seem to be rather willing to edit the work of other people. I'd like, if I may, to suggest to you a truce in this matter. I think I can make my own reasonable judgements about these things. My hope, and I ask for this in good faith, is that you will hesitate before editing the work of other people who quite experienced in these things (Indonesia, and editing). I honestly just don't have the time to argue over these things. I honestly don't. Could we call a truce? Please. ] (]) 01:40, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
