Hello! Please leave me new messages at the bottom of the page. I usually notice messages soon, and I usually respond on your talk page if it is something urgent, so you get a "you have new messages" notice. For casual banter I am just as likely to respond here.

Oh dear, I think I've been indignant

I may have veered too far towards attack mode, at User talk:Aussie Bob. It just seems soooo suspicious. Shenme 02:40, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm not where I can recognize or track individual vandals. Rather upon seeing one obviously bad edit, I go back through the editor's 'contributions' and look at all the Top entries, if any are still remaining. Let's just say I often hit a rich mother load (sic). Shenme 02:56, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

question about protection of articles

hello Antandrus,

it has been pointed out to me by nathanrdotcom here that the article Australia national football (soccer) team has lately been constantly vandalised by users such as here . My question: shouldn't the article be put under a protection in that case? I noticed that you are a sysop as well, but I was wondering why you haven't done so yet or if there is a proper procedure or hurdles that need to be overcome first before locking? I am new to sysopship, that's why I would appreciate your help and insight, thank you. with kind regards Gryffindor 14:39, 8 April 2006 (UTC) ps: could you take a look also at this case here and let me know what you think?

pschemp and I have commented here about the latter issue, just so everyone can follow conversation ;) — nathanrdotcom 15:07, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

Edit war at kriging, geostatistics

Hi, Antandrus. There's been somewhat of an edit war at kriging and geostatistics with User:JanWMerks. I noticed that you chimed in early on, but I seem to be the only person trying to communicate with Dr. Merks.

I've been trying to point out the central tenets of Misplaced Pages: NPOV, verifiability, no original research, but it hasn't seemed to help much.

  1. Are my edits and comments reasonable, do you think? I've been trying to find verifiable material to try to represent Dr. Merks' views, but doesn't seem to be enough --- the same original-research material keeps getting rephrased and inserted again and again.
  2. Would it help if someone else tried to communicate or help out? Could you help?

Thanks! -- hike395 21:53, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

P.S., for more background, you can see Dr. Merks' web site at hike395
Thanks! Any help you can provide will probably make things less stressful for both myself and Dr. Merks. -- hike395 22:55, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

Help! I don't think I can stay cool much longer, if I have to do all of the reverting and explaining by myself. Should I go to a general WP:RFC on the articles? I hate to make a big scene, but this is really adding enormously to my Wikistress. -- hike395 18:03, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

P.S., see my latest explanation at User talk:JanWMerks. -- hike395

Guillaume Costeley

Do you know what are the historical source about à birth in Fontanges en Auvergne ? I have always heard and red that Costeley was born in Pont-Audemer (Normandy) - that is, the same town where I was born myself ? Thank you. Gérard 22:24, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

"NOTOC"

Do you know what "" is for in the Wiki source code of some pages? I think I've also seen "__NOEDIT__" or something of that format. I've gotten to know most of the markup in Misplaced Pages but there are some that I'm still not certain. Thanks in advance.—GH 22:57, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Actually, does "
__NOTOC__
" blank out sections? I just noticed it blanked the title and the word in my question.—GH 22:58, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Do you have any reason to prefer the title Concerto di donne over Concerto delle donne (or Concerto de donne for that matter)? They seem to be roughly equal in popularity according to google and Grove. Is one archaic and one modern Italian? Mak (talk) 05:16, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
I'm leaning towards Concerto delle donne as well. No particularly good reason. Mak (talk) 05:38, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
Concerto delle donne probably needs better cats and fewer references (they're longer than the freaking article!). G'night. Mak (talk) 07:05, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Deletion of "Open vs Closed Encyclopedias" - Thank You

Dear Antandrus,

The article "Open vs Closed Encyclopedias" was a test project for our school. We (the students in the advanced current events) were claiming Misplaced Pages is very reliable and nearly as much as Britannica. Our teachers liked the old books on the shelves more and wanted us to conduct a test to see how it work would, we saying That they have people deleting articles, saying this is desputable, etc.

We therefore put together a really nonsense article, that made absolutely no sense, with the object in mind to get it deleted or marked in someway that showed it wasn't a reliable source.

Thank you - I believe this will allow us to continue to use Misplaced Pages as a student body, which every student in the advanced current event class said he or she used.

I would also like to know, is there a project that looks out for these types or articles, or are there a group or administrators who look out for them?

Sincerely, Kerry

Hi Kerry,
These kinds of articles are relatively easy to spot, and we get most all of them. I do a lot of "recent changes" patrol, and caught the edits by User:GLEE. as well as by 71.116.147.160; I looked at both the article and talk page, and after having a chuckle at the idea of 18th century Ancient Greeks, deleted the article. I think overall Misplaced Pages is fairly reliable. There are errors in it, of course, but the probability of running into deliberate misinformation is not all that high.
There's hundreds of people here who look out for "test articles" and vandalism; some are administrators (like me) and many more are not. Thanks for your note! Antandrus (talk) 14:59, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Another User:Breaky McWind

Hi. User:Broken Winds seems to be an alternative incarnation of User:Breaky McWind, who you banned indefinitely a few months ago. "Broken Winds", though inactive, probably should get the same treatment. More importantly, his user page should be deleted, or at least blanked, being an offensive (albeit indirect) attack on another Wikipedian. (I came across that user page via a defective search, was annoyed enough to investigate, and ended up here. I hope you don't mind.) —Chris Chittleborough 20:04, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Oh yes, I remember that one. Blocked as requested. It's an obvious attack account; I wouldn't be surprised if there were more around somewhere. Antandrus (talk) 20:10, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. "More around somewhere"? I'm sure you're right. Sigh. —Chris Chittleborough 22:26, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Fighting Vandalism

Are there any other templates besides the ones stated on Misplaced Pages:Vandalism? I see that you've used a different one than the test templates there...or I might be wrong...

Anyway, I'd also like to inform you that Dieting has been vandalized by 64.40.62.159. I noticed that that ip has vandalized before.—GH 01:30, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Take a look at some cited material . It's clear that this is a scientific feud that dates back at least 14 years, possibly more. I'm really uncertain how to handle this. -- hike395 06:01, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
I've tried to reach out to Dr. Merks and ask if we can reach some sort of compromise. Let's see if that does anything. This editing back-and-forth is not accomplishing much of anything. -- hike395 06:32, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Now that I have your attention

I'm a nice guy really. But getting blocked and banned for no reason by Heah is making me nuts. I have told the truth, followed wiki policy to the nest of my ability, but had to yell for help somehow. Is this how wiki treats new users? I'm very willing to discuss this with you, but this nonsense with blocking for no reason has got to cease. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 65.199.22.85 (talkcontribs) .

Vandalising his user page and talk page is not justifiable. Please stop it. Thanks. Antandrus (talk) 23:14, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

He is Risen!

Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia!
our triumphant holy day, Alleluia!
who did once upon the cross, Alleluia!
suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia!

Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia!
unto Christ, our heavenly King, Alleluia!
who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia!
sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia!

But the pains which he endured, Alleluia!
our salvation have procured, Alleluia!
now above the sky he's King, Alleluia!

where the angels ever sing. Alleluia!

Temporary halt to Kriging and Geostatistics edit war

Hi, Antandrus. Thanks for your help! I appreciate not being alone in trying to instruct people about NPOV.

Sadly, I think my attempts at trying to convince Dr. Merks to edit in an NPOV way have probably failed. See User talk:JanWMerks#We're just going in circles and User talk:JanWMerks#Gridlocked.

I'm not sure how to proceed. I think that the main articles at Kriging and Geostatistics have reached a reasonable NPOV state. (Can we remove the POV flag on Geostatistics, do you think?). Dr. Merks has made a couple of very POV articles: Spatial dependence and Sampling variogram, which I've labeled as such. I interpret his comments to mean that any attempt to make these articles NPOV would be reverted.

I could leave these articles as-is, becoming a strange POV wart in Misplaced Pages, labeled as such. I could try to list these on VfD (but personally don't like the VfD process). I could try to get more community input. What do you think?

(Personally, I feel like I've spent far too much time on this in the last 2 weeks.)

-- hike395 11:53, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

xx Sigh xx. Now Dr. Merks is blanking my comments on Talk pages, even after I've explicitly asked him not to on his talk page. See history of Talk:Tolstoy syndrome.

Isn't this considered vandalism under Wikipolicy? :-(

-- hike395 21:57, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Our friend is up to his old tricks, see history of Kriging and Geostatistics. Is it time for RfC yet? -- hike395 04:06, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
Ah, I didn't realize you were on Wikibreak. I should take a break, also -- I'm spending all of my time either 1) reverting vandalism or 2) reverting NPOV edits. WP seems to be going to heck in a handbasket.
One step that we can take before RfC is to post a comment to Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject Mathematics, explaining what is going on (in neutral terms), and appeal for more expert editors to help reach a consensus. We would have to do this for an RfC anyway, so this can be considered a partial step. What do you think? Would you care to write it? (You may be able to write about it more neutrally) Or, I can write about it, either way. -- hike395 05:05, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

Sierra hiking

I, too, am looking forward to the hiking season. Although, we've had an enormous amount of snow in the Sierra --- we recently had a huge spring storm. I suspect this is one of those years where June hiking will be on snow, and July will be full of bugs.

I haven't been on the High Sierra Trail for years, and only the first 7 or so (west end) miles. Hamilton Lake looks pretty, I want to go there some time (although the years keep flowing by!). Alta Peak also looks fun.

Attacks on "Naturist Christians" wiki by 152.163.100.74

There appears to be vandalism by 152.163.100.74 on the "Naturist Christians" wiki.

He/she keeps appending untruths about the "naturist-christians.org" web site, or deleting references to it.

Can anything be done to stop this?

User 207.165.130.252

This user; don't know how to refer otherwise to user pages. Everything is spam/vandalism. He's vandalized Waukon, Iowa twice. I think it's a kid.

Similarly, User Hellomyppretty has been similarly vandalizing Iowa town articles. This is probably the same kid.

Has he/they been blocked? --FourthAve 03:04, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

It could well be the same kid. I left a blatant vandal warning on the logged-in version, and the anon hasn't vandalized for nine days so I left it alone. You can also post at WP:AIV if he comes back and I'm not around. Antandrus (talk) 03:11, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

Attacks on "Naturist Christians" wiki by 152.163.100.74 CONTINUES

Vandalism by 152.163.100.74 on the "Naturist Christians" wiki is ongoing.

He/she keeps delting references to the "naturist-christians.org" web site.references to it.

Can anything be done to stop this?

Naturist-christians.org is a legitimate 501-C organization that takes donations, not payment. It contains a wealth of information pertaining to Christian naturism throughout the world and history.

I did go to the WP:AIV that you mentioned. The problem as I understand it is that he/she is coming through AOL and the warnings are apparently ignored.

Also, I do not want to break any rules by repeatedly reverting the page.

What is the next logical step?

Deleted redirect

Hello Antandrus. Please note that I've deleted the redirect from ] to MediaWiki:Badtitle. The phrase "Insert text" is quite common and should be reserved for a future article. Further, it is easier to find vandalism if it contains redlinks, and readers may be confused by the error message if they click through.

If you disagree with the deletion, feel free to restore it and I'll RFD it instead. // Pathoschild (/map) 17:06, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
