April 2013

Please do not attack other editors, as you did to WP:AN. Comment on content, not on contributors. Personal attacks damage the community and deter users. Please stay cool and keep this in mind while editing. Thank you. Bbb23 (talk) 22:47, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

If this is a shared IP address, and you did not make the edit, consider creating an account for yourself so you can avoid further irrelevant notices.

Who do you think I 'attacked'? 88.104.27.58 (talk) 23:00, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

I assume you're referring to this edit, that you removed.

I said that a statement was stupid - and explained why; I also said NYB was an asset to Misplaced Pages.

So, perhaps you made a mistake? 88.104.27.58 (talk) 23:02, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

Your exact text was saying "how fucking stupid your statement was". Saying it's a straw-man argument is okay, saying that it's a falliable statement would, but calling it fucking stupid is an attack on the mental character of the person who made the statement. You know there were many better ways to word that, but you chose to call it "fucking stupid", which is obviously not fully about the comment but about the person just as much. gwickwireediting 03:55, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
  • <Sigh>. I'm not trying to be a jerk here 88, but I really hope you do get done with your "See how bad IP editors are treated" experiment pretty soon. Then maybe you can login to your account and work on .. ummm ... oh, I don't know - maybe actually improving some articles? Any chance of that happening any time soon? Just wondering - I mean you're on what? At least your 3rd IP in the last month or two? Come on, .. Please? — Ched :  ?  04:25, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

It's not an experiment.

I came back to edit because I wanted to make a few changes to a couple of articles - which I did. The 'badly treated IP' thing just happened - several times. I think it looks like an experiment because I know enough WP to try and defend myself, whereas most IPs just give up.

I doubt I'll go back to my account, because it's an extremely toxic environment, it's just too stressful here.

I'm only hanging out at the moment to pursue the copyright RFC (which Maggie advised me to start, following a discussion started by another person on Jimbo's talk). I don't know if I'll bother with that either though; I'm getting insults and thinly-veiled block threats about that too . 88.104.27.58 (talk) 14:54, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

Yea, I saw that one. The kid's just trying to make an impression on everyone. He means well, just lacks some perspective and experience and all. He's actually pretty bright with the techie stuff too. I agree, the project is struggling a bit - and I've even lost my temper a few times and posted in ways I wish I wouldn't have. There's been a couple pretty decent admins. caught up in things though that are getting some heat I really don't think they deserve. I admit, it's easy to forget to treat everyone the same - and far too often we, including myself, tend to "been there, done that" - and jump to the typical "IP WP:NOTHERE conclusions. I haven't been looking in on the copyright stuff since I did the WP:FIXNF thing and shortly after that delta/beta got banned. Look, if you are who I think you are - then I know full well that you are good people, and that you've done a HUGE amount of hard work to make this place better. *and I'll add that I honestly do miss seeing you around - nobody was better at helping folks than you) And I know it looks like it's all going to hell sometimes. It's not that I have any answers - it's just that I hate to see the discord. I don't know 88 .. whatever I guess. You're no n00b, so I won't try to change you. You take care. — Ched :  ?  17:09, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
Sorry for the talk page stalking but I saw your comments and wanted to drop in. 88, I know how you feel, believe me. I have gotten so frustrated with this place (and still am in most respects) I partially hope that Jimbo or the WMF just shut the servers off and write off the project as an epic failure in social development. I keep coming back though because I do believe in the project and so do a lot of others. I also agree that Misplaced Pages has a toxic environment and needs a major change. Not the least of which is a good kick to the policy for editors like BeyondMyKen who I notice you have interacted with a bit. He and others like him are in large part the reason this project has the problems it does. Also partially because others with the power to check them allow it to continue. Ok rant over. I hope you reconsider and stay around for a while. As you might tell from my user name (not my signature) you'll notice I do not have much respect for the clean start policy. If you had that in mind, you may as well use the original one. Kumioko (talk) 01:12, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

I note that you mentioned above that you are an editor who has an account who is nevertheless editing with an IP by choice. Please note that this is a violation of Misplaced Pages's sockpuppetry policies, and could lead to your being blocked from editing in the future. I suggest that, whatever your opinion of the "toxicity" of the Misplaced Pages environment, you return to editing with your account, to insure that other editors are able to scrutinize the totality of your contributions. Thanks, Beyond My Ken (talk) 04:24, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

I can't say I understand the RAGE that IP editing provokes from some Wikipedians. Mark Arsten (talk) 18:34, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
The rage is that this person is editing as an IP with controversial topics (the copyright RfC, etc) to avoid having it associated with their account. That's wrong, because come RfANYTHING time, the community won't know about their IDHT attitude and their comments on these discussion, thus failing the "avoiding scrutiny" part of being a legitimate sockpuppet. gwickwireediting 18:42, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
