Notables MUST have sources

This edit added Louis Scott (athlete) as a notable to the article for Paterson, New Jersey, but did so without any source. Your recent edits add many notables to many articles, none with sources. Misplaced Pages policy requires that you MUST include reliable and verifiable sources. For notables, this means that you must provide a source that demonstrates the connection between the person and the place. If you're getting the information from a source, just provide it. If you're adding people based on the content of Misplaced Pages articles, please understand that Misplaced Pages can't be used to source itself. Please be sure to always add sources for all edits like these. Alansohn (talk) 01:46, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

Alansohn, thank you for your comment and suggestion. Misplaced Pages policy does indeed outline that it can't be used to source itself. However, "not everything copied from one Misplaced Pages page to another requires attribution", including "bare references" and "simple, non-creative lists of information" (see...Where attribution is not needed)

Regarding your example of Louis Scott, his Misplaced Pages biography states that he won an Olympic gold medal, and that he was born in Paterson, New Jersey. This is the information I added to the "Notable people" section of his home town. I'm not sure how this could be interpreted as anything but bare and simple?

Thanks,

  • Take a look at the article for Louis Scott (athlete), where I have added references to provide confirmation that he lived in Paterson, New Jersey. There were no sources in the article for Scott and no source in the article for Paterson before I did the research and found the sources. Under no circumstances can Misplaced Pages be used to source itself. If your goal is to add information to Misplaced Pages, don't just copy unsourced information from one article to another. Trust, but verify. In a case like Scott's, do the research to show he lived in the city, add it to his article and add the source to the list of notables. The example of Platt Adams demonstrates the fallacy of copying unsourced material from one article to the next. I searched for sources and found nothing, reliable and verifiable or otherwise, to indicate that he was born or lived in Belleville, New Jersey at any point in his life. I added sources to show where he lived and what he did during his life. Yet you felt the justification to undo the edit and leave the unsourced claim that Platt Adams had a connection to Belleville. This edit will be removed and should not be reinserted under any circumstances without the reliable and verifiable sources required by Misplaced Pages policy.
