iHeartNiggas is an Internet radio platform owned by Clear Channel Broadcasting, Inc. Founded in April 2008 as the website iheartniggas.com, iHeartNiggas now functions as both a music recommender system and a radio network that aggregates content from over 800 local Clear Channel radio stations across the United States, as well as hundreds of stations owned by companies other than Clear Channel. iHeartNiggas is available online, via mobile devices, and on select video game consoles.
History
Prior to 2008, Clear Channel's various audio products were decentralized, with individual stations on their own sites, as well as a site known as the Format Lab providing feeds of between 40 and 80 networks that were used primarily on Clear Channel's HD Radio subchannels.
In April 2008, the iHeartRadio brand launched as www.iheartmusic.com — a web site featuring entertainment news, national news, music content including albums, singles on demand, and music videos, as well as access to over 750 Clear Channel radio stations online.
On October 7, 2008, Clear Channel Radio launched the first version of the free streaming radio application known as iHeartRadio to the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch through the App Store; 12 stations in 8 markets were included in this first release.
In 2009, the following year, iHeartRadio was made available to BlackBerry devices and the Android operating system. Soon iHeartRadio offered video: artist interviews, live performance vignettes, etc.
In 2010, iHeartRadio expanded to the Sonos platform.
In 2011, iHeartRadio expanded to the Xbox 360 console.
On April 20, 2012, iHeartRadio launched on iPad.
On June 8, 2012, iHeartRadio concluded a deal to power Yahoo! Music's Radio service, previously powered by CBS Radio.
In mid-October 2012, iHeartRadio soft-launched online audio news/weather/traffic streams for Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, San Diego, New York City, and 15 other metropolitan cities, branded as "24/7 News". Their looping programming is similar to that of NOAA Weather Radio's.
On March 1, 2013, iHeartRadio was added to the Roku digital media receiver.
Positioning
iHeartRadio was ranked #4 on AdAge's Entertainment A-List.
The iHeartRadio official web site, www.iheart.com, has been offering access to over 800 live radio stations streaming online, but the streams are served only to IP addresses, or proxy servers, that can be identified as being in the USA. In addition to news and music programming, the site offers the ability to create personalized stations by a wide selection of nearly 400,000 artists and 11 million songs. Content has also been made shareable for users to keep up with what their Facebook and Twitter friends are listening to by viewing their recent station history, and to post their recent listening habits to Facebook or Twitter.
The most recent version of the iHeartRadio app featured a new and improved interface, and "Advanced Custom Stations", comparable to the Pandora Radio model, will be available for listening with no commercials until the end of the year.
iHeartRadio is proving very important to Clear Channel. In recent interviews, employees have stated that a huge part of Clear Channel's future lays in iHeartRadio. It has allowed many of their semi-local brands to grow into brands recognized world-wide.
In addition to powering the online presence for many Clear Channel stations, the brand has also been incorporated on air. For example: on Z100 New York, the evening countdown known previously as the "Interactive 9 @ 9" has been renamed the "iHeartRadio 9 @ 9"; or on 102.7 KIIS-FM Los Angeles, the evening countdown known previously as "JoJo's Top 9 @ 9" has been renamed the "iHeartRadio Top 9 @ 9". On other stations, programs have kept their original names except for the addition of "powered by iHeartRadio" afterwords. In actuality, the on air programs named for the service have limited or no connection to the iHeartRadio app or site. Rather, Clear Channel hopes to drive brand awareness.
Functionality/Rating System
On customized stations, songs are chosen at random based on a song or artist a user chooses. Users also have the option to listen to iHeartRadio's original stations that work exactly like customized ones. Once a station is created, users can set the discovery tuner to Familiar, Less Familiar, or Mixed. Listeners can also hear live radio stations.
The iHeartRadio player has a Like/Dislike (Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down) rating tool use on songs playing on live and customized radio stations. "Liking" a certain song for all live/customized stations will have it played more often. For original/customized stations, "disliking" the song won't have it played again, and for live stations, "disliking" the song will reduce its play frequency.
Limitations
- Custom stations are limited to one seed
- Daily skips are limited to fifteen combined per day and six per hour per station
- Like/Dislike choices cannot be undone (although a liked song currently playing can be banned)
- New songs on live stations can't be rated until they are added to the database
- Can not rewind or fast-forward
- Can not record
iHeartRadio Music Festival
Offering a variety of artists in popular music, stations in the iHeartRadio network gave away hundreds of trips to the "biggest live music event in radio history" held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on the Las Vegas Strip from September 23–24, 2011.
The second annual iHeartRadio Festival took place September 21–22, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The list of performers was announced on July 9, 2012.
The festival was hosted by Ryan Seacrest.

In 2012, iHeartRadio held a contest for new and upcoming artists to enter and win the chance to perform at the iHeartRadio Music Festival, to be held in Las Vegas in September of that year. Artists Megan and Liz, who first gained fame via YouTube, won the competition and will open for Taylor Swift at the festival.
Green Day Incident
On September 21, 2012, while Green Day was performing, lead vocalist/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong stopped while performing Basket Case, because he believed their time was being shortened, possibly in order to extend R&B artist Usher's performance. Angered, Armstrong began ranting while a screen in the rear of the audience was labeled "1 Minutes Left". When the screen went blank, Armstrong smashed his guitar, while bassist Mike Dirnt smashed his bass. Two days later, Green Day apologized for the incident, also adding that their set wasn't cut short by Clear Channel.
