*There is a parameter called locmapin used in the NRHP infobox that controls the map template used for pushpin maps. If the parameter is "New Jersey", it displays a map of the whole state, which is not very helpful. I worked with another editor to create maps of each county, and if "USA New Jersey Union County" is specified, it will show a map of Union County. Don't threaten to report my edits as "vandalism" just because you don't agree with my style.

If in doubt about what vandalism is or isn't, see ].

You do a lot of edits, and you have certainly added to Misplaced Pages. But you don't own it.

When you act so harshly with people who add to articles about New Jersey, you inhibit them from contributing. This is a problem.

Months ago I explained to you why I don't need to reference Wiki articles that have already been referenced.

If you don't like my edits, you are free to improve them.

WikiCup 2010 June newsletter

We're half way through 2010, and the end of the WikiCup is in sight! Round 3 is over, and we're down to our final 16. Our pool winners were Ian Rose (submissions) (A), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (B, and the round's overall leader), Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions) (C) New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) (D, joint), but, with the scores reset, everything is to play for in our last pooled round. The pools will be up before midnight tonight, and have been selected randomly by J Milburn. This will be the toughest round yet, and so, as ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Though unaffiliated with the WikiCup, July sees the third Great Misplaced Pages Dramaout- a project with not dissimilar goals to the WikiCup. Everyone is welcome to take part and do their bit to contribute to the encyclopedia itself.

If you're interested in the scores for the last round of the Cup, please take a look at Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/History/2010/Round 3 and Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/History/2010/Full/Round 3. Our thanks go to Bavaria Stone (submissions) for compiling these. As was predicted, Group C ended up the "Group of Death", with 670 points required for second place, and, therefore, automatic promotion. This round will probably be even tougher- again, the top two from each of the two groups will make it through, while the twelve remaining participants will compete for four wildcard places- good luck everyone! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. J Milburn, Fox and The ed17

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive update

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far.

Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers.

Your drive coordinators – Dianna (talk), Stfg (talk), and Dank (talk)

Articles for Creation urgently needs YOUR help!

Articles for Creation is desperately short of reviewers! We are looking for urgent help, from experienced editors, in reviewing submissions in the pending submissions queue. Currently there are 1871 submissions waiting to be reviewed and many help requests at our Help Desk.

Do you have what it takes?
  1. Are you familiar with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines?
  2. Do you know what Misplaced Pages is and is not?
  3. Do you have a working knowledge of the Manual of Style, particularly article naming conventions?
  4. Are you autoconfirmed?
  5. Can you review submissions based on their individual merits?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then please read the reviewing instructions and donate a little of your time to helping tackle the backlog. You might wish to add {{AFC status}} or {{AfC Defcon}} to your userpage, which will alert you to the number of open submissions.

PS: we have a great AFC helper script at User:Timotheus Canens/afchelper4.js which helps in reviewing in just few edits easily!

We would greatly appreciate your help. Currently, only a small handful of users are reviewing articles. Any help, even if it's just 2 or 3 reviews, it would be extremely beneficial.

Princeton (Part 2)

I utilized the link you provided and sent the task force an email. While this is a true merger, wherein the two existing municipalities will cease to exist and be superseded by the new consolidated Princeton, I'm told the new municipality will have a "borough form of government," meaning essentially it will all be the Borough of Princeton. While this won't be the same entity as the current Borough of Princeton, it will still technically be called the Borough of Princeton.

Now, I was curious what you and others were planning to do as there are currently 3 articles regarding Princeton. My advice would be to delete the Township and Borough articles as they'll be redundant. The article simply called Princeton should specify that the the municipality is a borough, and that it's existence came about from the merger of the former borough with the former township. I see no point in having 3 articles.

But what is your opinion and those of others heavily involved in editing those pages?

Removing "NJ" in lead

I noticed your edits to Buckshutem, New Jersey and Bridgeboro, New Jersey, just to name a few, where you have (I assume unintentionally) removed "New Jersey" to the lead of each paragraph. You inserted the country to many pages recently, left in the township or borough, and the county, but missing the state. Please go through your edits again and be more careful about this for the future. I have fixed the two examples I gave. Tinton5 (talk) 16:58, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip and for correcting the errors. Alansohn (talk) 02:54, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

Charles Mainor

In regards to your edit about New Jersey Assemblyman Charles Mainor and the need for sourcing allegations of wrongdoing, to which I did so in the original edit. Apparently Misplaced Pages does not appreciate links to videos referenced from Youtube, so a .mp4 format video is here: http://dirtydeedsdonedirtcheap.net/video/CharlesMainor.mp4. The video originates from the New Jersey Assembly and is shows the complete context.Kafir 1776 (talk) 17:38, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

See reply on user's talk page. Alansohn (talk) 17:40, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
What more do you want for a source than a video taken from WITHIN the assembly DURING the proceedings? Is A/V footage that of someone that shows the entire context no longer considered a legitimate source?Kafir 1776 (talk) 17:50, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
Looks like it has been reported to the Star-Ledger http://www.nj.com/politics/index.ssf/2013/06/sweeneys_gun_bill_stalls_in_co.html. Kafir 1776 (talk) 18:23, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

What do you have against {{cite news}}? —Anomalocaris (talk) 21:48, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

Both formats are supported in Misplaced Pages and I find the free-form version far easier to build, especially as I have added thousands upon thousands of references. Once it becomes easier to use i will be happy to convert to the dark cite. Alansohn (talk) 04:46, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

WikiProject Articles for creation Backlog Elimination Drive

WikiProject AFC is holding a one month long Backlog Elimination Drive!
The goal of this drive is to eliminate the backlog of unreviewed articles. The drive is running from July 1st, 2013 – July 31st, 2013.

Awards will be given out for all reviewers participating in the drive in the form of barnstars at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 1000 articles, so start reviewing articles! Visit the drive's page and help out!

A new version of our AfC helper script is released! It includes many bug fixes, new improvements and features, code cleanup, and more page cleanups. If you want to see a full list of changes, go to Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Articles for creation/Helper script/Development page. Please report bugs and feature requests there, too! Thanks.

Categories for NJ municipalities

I really feel that the municipality categories need to be done differently. Hopefully, over time, most municipalities will have their own category, like in CT and MA. This should warrant putting the municipalities in the appropriate larger categories of Cities, Towns, Villages, so that all of the named categories in a state can be seen together by size. By putting them in Populated places in XX county, you can also find all the named categories in each county. Please see examples like Category:Populated places in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. Jllm06 (talk) 16:29, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

The problem I've had is that the municipalities belong in the categories for populated places, while the categories for the municipalities don't. To pick a recent example, Hope Township, New Jersey belongs in Category:Populated places in Warren County, New Jersey; the Category:Hope Township, New Jersey doesn't because the category is not a populated place. The Hope Township category includes an amusement park, a church, a school district and a winery, but none of those are populated places in Warren County, though all are within the structure of Warren County. I will take a look at the Barnstable model and see how this fits with the intended purpose of the category system and to see if there is any alternative way to achieve your goals within that intended structure. Featured List candidate: List of colonial governors of New Jersey

I finally finished my overhaul of List of colonial governors of New Jersey and nominated it for Featured list status. The nomination can be found here: Misplaced Pages:Featured list candidates/List of colonial governors of New Jersey/archive1. Area data -- for both sqmi and km2 -- are supplied by the United States Census Bureau, with no need to perform a conversion

I see where Guerrilla of the Renmin has simply ignored our suggestions and has not waited to resolve this issue with us on their Talk page. Guerrilla has simply proceeded to make these unnecessary changes. I see where you are going separately after each of these changes and reverting them to show the correct information. I'm sure you have better things to do than correct Guerilla's unnecessary changes.

Unfortunately, even if somehow there was a consensus to allow Guerrilla to make the changes, the way the changes are being made are wrong and would conflict with the same info in the Info Boxes, which are manually entered and not converted using a Template. In addition, the percentage or area covered by water would be based on the manually entered English and metric units and not the converted units. This would cause further confusion and possible revisions.

In addition, Guerrilla's convert Template is using the abbreviated form of English unit rather than the fully spelled out units, which is preferred and regularly used in these articles. That also should be corrected.

On Guerrila's Talk page, you mentioned that you had already discussed this issue extensively. Is there any Talk page, where an authoritative consensus was reached, that you can refer me to?

How can Guerrilla be quickly stopped from making all these changes until there is some type of consensus resolution? Isn't there some Misplaced Pages protocol that prevents someone from making changes, even though others have indicated that the changes should not be made?

Is there a Misplaced Pages page for a team that handles New Jersey articles where this issue can be addressed?

This issue needs to be elevated higher than addressing it on Guerrilla's talk page below.

User talk:Guerrilla of the Renmin#Area data -- for both sqmi and km2 -- are supplied by the United States Census Bureau, with no need to perform a conversion

I look forward to giving you any assistance that you need.Wondering55 (talk) 15:49, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

  • I agree with you 100%, but it seems that GotR has stopped making these unnecessary conversion changes as part of his other edits. Assuming that there are no further changes by GotR, I think that this issue can be put to bed, for now, though I agree that we should keep an eye out for any further changes. Thanks again for all of your assistance with improving New Jersey articles. Alansohn (talk) 15:54, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 June newsletter

We are down to our final 16: the 2013 semi-finals are upon us. A score of 321 was required to survive round 3, further cementing this as the most competitive WikiCup yet; round 3 was survived in 2012 with 243 points, in 2011 with 76 points and in 2010 with 250 points. The change may in part be to do with the fact that more articles are now awarded bonus points, in addition to more competitive play. Reaching the final has, in the past, required 573 points (2012, a 135% increase on the score needed to reach round 4), 150 points (2011, a 97% increase) and 417 points (2010, a 72% increase). This round has seen over a third of participants claiming points for featured articles (with seven users claiming for multiple featured articles) and most users have also gained bonus points. However, the majority of points continue to come from good articles, followed by did you know articles. In this round, every content type was utilised by at least one user, proving that the WikiCup brings together content contributors from all corners of the project.

Round 3 saw a number of contributions of note. Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions) claimed the first featured topic points in this year's competition for her excellent work on topics related to Maya Angelou, the noted American author and poet. We have also continued to see high-importance articles improved as part of the competition: Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions) was awarded a thoroughly well-earned 560 points for her featured article Middle Ages and 102 points for her good article Battle of Hastings. Good articles James Chadwick and Stanislaw Ulam netted Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) 102 and 72 points respectively, while 72 points were awarded to Poland Piotrus (submissions) for each of Władysław Sikorski and Emilia Plater, both recently promoted to good article status. Collaborative efforts between WikiCup participants have continued, with, for example, New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and Canada Sasata (submissions) being awarded 180 points each for their featured article on Boletus luridus.

A rules reminder: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on the 29/30 June, which may be claimed in this round. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Reviews. We are currently seeing concern about the amount of time people have to wait for reviews, especially at GAC- if you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Misplaced Pages talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Red categories

Hey, do you know why these categories are popping up on certain pages? Category:Historic districts in USA New Jersey Union County, Category:Historic districts in USA New Jersey Monmouth County, etc.

I use Hot Cat, and I am unable to get rid of them (no plus or minus button), and I doubt they should be created because they seem redundant to already existing categories. Tinton5 (talk) 16:46, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

  • There is a parameter called locmapin used in the NRHP infobox that controls the map template used for pushpin maps. If the parameter is "New Jersey", it displays a map of the whole state, which is not very helpful. I worked with another editor to create maps of each county, and if "USA New Jersey Union County" is specified, it will show a map of Union County. The problem is that this parm is also used for another purpose for historic districts. So if locmapin contains "New Jersey" it correctly generates Category:Historic districts in New Jersey, but if it contains "USA New Jersey Union County" it incorrectly generates Category:Historic districts in USA New Jersey Union County. Because these red cats are generated by the template, there's no way to get rid of them using a tool like HotCat. I will look through the template logic and see if there is any way to work around this or to have it fixed to deal with the problem. Alansohn (talk) 18:16, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

you

Don't threaten to report my edits as "vandalism" just because you don't agree with my style.

If in doubt about what vandalism is or isn't, see Misplaced Pages:Administrator intervention against vandalism.

And please note...

"Harassment, threats, intimidation, repeated annoying and unwanted contact or attention, and repeated personal attacks may reduce an editor's enjoyment of Misplaced Pages and thus cause disruption to the project."
