The '''wave motion gun''' or '''Yamato gun/weapon''' is a ] concept of an extremely powerful weapon which, after being fired, requires considerable time to recharge while leaving its user powerless and vulnerable. The term specifically comes from the ] series '']'', where the wave motion gun was one of the most visible features on the ''Yamato'' and many other ]s; the gun could deal devastating damage against a single target, but left its ship adrift and unable to defend itself for a short time thereafter.

Other examples of such a weapon include the main gun of the starship ''Excalibur'' in the ] spinoff ], the ] of the ] ] in ], and the ] of the ], which in turn lent the name to the Macross Cannon of '']''. The Watchtower in Justice League Unlimited also had huge laser that when fired drained the station of all but emergency power for 1 hour.

The original weapon was based on redirecting the tachyon engine in reverse through the ship turning the entire ship into one giant weapon. To operate this weapon, the Argo itself is aimed at a target. At which point a gun trigger like mechanism in the bridge is pulled to fire the wave motion gun.
