WikiCup 2013 August newsletter

This year's final is upon us. Our final eight, in order of last round's score, are:

  1. Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer who has contributed on topics of military history and physics, including a number of high-importance topics. Good articles have made up the bulk of his points, but he has also scored a great deal of bonus points. He has the second highest score overall so far, with more than 3000 points accumulated.
  2. New South Wales Casliber (submissions), another WikiCup veteran who reached the finals in 2012, 2011 and 2010. He writes on a variety of topics including botany, mycology and astronomy, and has claimed the highest or joint highest number of featured articles every round so far this year. He has the third highest score overall, with just under 3000 points accumulated.
  3. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 WikiCup champion, who writes mostly on marine biology. She has also contributed to high-importance topics, seeing huge numbers of bonus points for high-importance featured and good articles. Previous rounds have seen her scoring the most bonus points, with scoring spread across did you knows, good articles and featured articles.
  4. Canada Sasata (submissions), a WikiCup veteran who finished in second place in 2012, and competed as early as 2009. He writes articles on biology, especially mycology, and has scored highly for a number of collaborations at featured article candidates.
  5. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), the winner of the 2010 competition. His contributions mostly concern Naval history, and he has scored a very large number of points for good articles and good article reviews in every round. He is the highest scorer overall this year, with over 3500 points in total.
  6. Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions), who is competing in the WikiCup for the second time, though this will be her first time in the final. A regular at FAC, she is mostly interested in British medieval history, and has scored very highly for some top-importance featured articles on the topic.
  7. London Miyagawa (submissions), a finalist in 2012 and 2011. He writes on a broad variety of topics, with many of this year's points coming from good articles about Star Trek. Good articles make up the bulk of his points, and he had the most good articles back in round 2; he was also the highest scorer for DYK in rounds 1 and 2.
  8. Scotland Adam Cuerden (submissions) has previously been involved with the WikiCup, but hasn't participated for a number of years. He scores mostly from restoration work leading to featured picture credits, but has also done some article writing and reviewing.

We say goodbye to eight great participants who did not qualify for the final: Poland Piotrus (submissions), Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions), Ohio ThaddeusB (submissions), Michigan Dana boomer (submissions), Prince Edward Island Status (submissions), United States Ed! (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), England Calvin999 (submissions). Having made it to this stage is still an excellent achievement, and you can leave with your heads held high. We hope to see you all again next year. Signups are now open for the 2014 WikiCup, which will begin on 1 January. All Wikipedians, whatever their interest or level of experience, are warmly invited to participate in next year's competition.

This last month has seen some incredible contributions; for instance, Cwmhiraeth's Starfish and Ealdgyth's Battle of Hastings—two highly important, highly viewed pages—made it to featured article status. It would be all too easy to focus solely on these stunning achievements at the expense of those participants working in lower-scoring areas, when in fact all WikiCup participants are doing excellent work. A mention of everything done is impossible, but here are a few: Last round saw the completion of several good topics (on the 1958, 1959 and 1962 Atlantic hurricane seasons) to which 12george1 had contributed. Calvin999 saw "S&M" (song), on which he has been working for several years, through to featured article status on its tenth try. Figureskatingfan continued towards her goal of a broad featured/good topic on Maya Angelou, with two featured and four good articles. ThaddeusB contributed significantly to over 20 articles which appeared on the main page's "in the news" section. Adam Cuerden continued to restore a large number of historical images, resulting in over a dozen FP credits this round alone. The WikiCup is not just about top-importance featured articles, and the work of all of these users is worthy of commendation.

Finally, the usual notices: If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Misplaced Pages talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Compliance buyout link removal

I apologize. I removed your "compliance buyout" link off of the nhl transactions page.

The link you posted was originally a dead link. It was actually a typo, but I didn't realize the page had been made and just assumed it was purely a dead link so I removed it.

Thanks though for creating and adding that!

No problem. Keep up the great work! Dolovis (talk) 04:02, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

Hello, Dolovis, and thank you for your contributions!

WHA players

Hi Dolovis. I noticed that you've recently created some articles on players who competed in the World Hockey Association. Are you interested in creating articles for more missing WHA players? I think it would be an extremely useful and worthwhile project to undertake. --Hockeyben   16:53, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for noticing. I have always been passionate about old-time hockey, and I will soon be receiving (in transit) the WHA bible The Complete Historical and Statistical Reference to the World Hockey Association, 1972-1979; so yes, I plan to continue my course to create and improve articles for WHA and other notable retired players. Cheers! Dolovis (talk) 21:17, 21 September 2013 (UTC)
As have I. European hockey as well as North American minor pro/senior hockey pre-1980 are my areas of interest, so to speak. Interesting! I was unaware such a book existed. It should be an excellent resource for player articles. Anyway, keep up the good work! :) --Hockeyben   21:51, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Re:Changing date formats

Why with reverting date formates, you are also reverting my fixes of wiki sintax? Cybervoron (talk) 13:13, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

I am using 'UNDO' on your edits which are changing MDY format to DMY format contrary to WP:DATERET. Dolovis (talk) 13:16, 28 September 2013 (UTC)
Sorry but you also restricting this rule. Look at the first edit Here was DMY format. Cybervoron (talk) 13:46, 28 September 2013 (UTC)
Out of the dozens of articles that you changed against policy, this article appears to be the one exception. Cheers. Dolovis (talk) 13:54, 28 September 2013 (UTC)
It doesn't mean that you just can revert every single edit without even looking what I have edited. So I hope it was really only exception, if it repeats again, it will be exactly wikihounding. Cybervoron (talk) 14:05, 28 September 2013 (UTC)
I was looking at the edit history, and your pattern of editing behaviour. It is not wiki-hounding enforce a wiki-policy. 14:13, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

FYI

Hi,

Some of your recent clean-up edits came up on my watchlist and I noticed one of the changes you were making is changing the caption = parameter to image_caption. This actually breaks the code and ends up suppressing anything in the field. The proper parameter should be simply caption = . Just wanted to give you the heads up in case you were unaware. Cheers --Mo Rock...Monstrous (leech44) 00:12, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

Must have been a cut-paste error. Thanks for catching it! Cheers. Dolovis (talk) 02:03, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 September newsletter

In 30 days, we will know the identity of our 2013 WikiCup champion. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) currently leads; if that lead is held, she will become the first person to have won the WikiCup twice. Canada Sasata (submissions), Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions)—who has never participated in the competition before—and New South Wales Casliber (submissions) follow. The majority of points in this round have come from a mix of good articles and bonus points. This final round is seeing contributions to a number of highly important topics; recent submissions include Phoenix (constellation) (FA by Casliber), Ernest Lawrence (GA by Hawkeye7), Pinniped, and red fox (both GAs by Sasata).

The did you know (DYK) eligibility criteria have recently changed, meaning that newly passed good articles are accepted as "new" for did you know purposes. However, in the interests of not changing the WikiCup rules mid-competition, please note that only articles eligible for DYK under the old system (that is, newly created articles or 5x expansions) will be eligible for points in this year's WikiCup. We do, however, have time to discuss how this new system will work for next year's competition; a discussion will be opened in due course. On that note, thoughts are welcome on changes you'd like to see for next year. What worked? What didn't work? What would you like to see more of? What would you like to see less of? All Wikipedians, new or old, are also warmly invited to sign up for the 2014 WikiCup.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Misplaced Pages talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Your request for undeletion

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that a response has been made at Misplaced Pages:Requests for undeletion regarding a submission you made. The thread is Lucas Lessio. JohnCD (talk) 11:22, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

Andy Powers

Even though we obviously disagree on the player's notability, I did want to mention that I noticed the work you put in cleaning up the article and appreciate that effort. Cheers! Resolute 21:41, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Historical NHL affiliations

I've added the parameter as you've requested. I can get most of the Flames pretty easily since the info is in each year's media guide. Good luck with the rest, however. Resolute 17:12, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Congratulations to everyone who has been successful in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and a particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have achieved this year. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition. While it has been an excellent year, errors have opened up the judges' eyes to the need for a third judge, and it is with pleasure that we announce that experienced WikiCup participant Miyagawa will be acting as a judge from now on. We hope you will all join us in welcoming him to the team.

Next year's competition begins on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; it is open to all Wikipedians, new and old. Brainstorming and discussion remains open for how next year's competition will work, and straw polls will be opened by the judges soon. Those interested in friendly competition may also like to keep an eye on the stub contest, being organised by Casliber. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2014 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! Proposed deletion of 2016 NHL Entry Draft

The article 2016 NHL Entry Draft has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

WP:TOOSOON

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ...William 01:09, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

Your topic ban

A formal close of the archived discussion of your topic ban was requested at WP:ANRFC. I have just done the close, and I doubt it will come as any surprise that I did not find a consensus to lift the ban reflected I that discussion and it should be considered to still be in force. Beeblebrox (talk) 19:45, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

Alex Chiasson

Hi, I noticed you reverted my edit to Alex Chiasson concerning the pronounciation of his name. I understand that stars.nhl.com gives this pronounciation, but I do not think there is a consensus about this. As a native speaker, I think it should be something like "Shee-a-sahn". Another user mentioned on the talk page that the pronounciation is likely wrong. I do not question the reliability of the source (the team's website), but since francophone names tend to be mangled in English media, I believe the pronounciation should not appear on the page until consensus is reached. This is a common name in Quebec and I have never heard it pronounced this way (SHAY-sahn). It is my opinion that it is easier not to propagate potentially false information on Misplaced Pages than to have the Stars website make the fix upstream. Thanks! Gagnon88 (talk) 20:23, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

Please read and follow the policy of Misplaced Pages:Verifiability. Dolovis (talk) 20:28, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
I am aware of the verifiability policy, I have been around for a while. Gagnon88 (talk) 15:41, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Isn't sources only for adding content? He wants to remove something that he knows is incorrect even if it's technically OR. Gagnon88 says he lives in Québec, if he says that pronounciation is wrong then that's what it is unless you think he's doing bad faith editing. SlightSmile 16:35, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
The proper course to now follow would be to open a discussion per WP:BRD at Talk:Alex Chiasson. Dolovis (talk) 16:43, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
I don't get it. If he believes it's wrong let him do the correction unless you definately know otherwise. Why make it complicated. I don't see this needing a talk page debate. Keep it simple shall we. SlightSmile 16:57, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
That's not how Misplaced Pages works. Articles are based on verifiable information. Even if you're sure something is true, it must be verifiable; (I would think that if Chiasson disagreed with the pronunciation of his name as published by his employers, the Dallas Stars, that it would be an easy recourse for him to bring this to the attention of the Stars' public relations department to be corrected, but I regress). Gagnon88's bold edit to delete verifiable and sourced information from the article has been reverted per BRD. If you wish to pursue this issue then take it to a discussion so a consensus can be reached. Dolovis (talk) 18:53, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
I Understand your point, Dolovis. Misplaced Pages is based on verifiable information, not what editors believe is true, as per WP:NOTTRUTH. The nhl.com websites seem to qualify as a reliable source for hockey matters, so we'll leave it to that for now. I just want to point out the fact that other editors might also be tempted to remove this information as it is definitely wrong. It's a bit like if I wrote that Smith is actually pronounced "Shhmitz" on the French version of Misplaced Pages, but I had a source to back it. Gagnon88 (talk) 14:19, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
P.S. I have taken the discussion to Talk:Alex Chiasson. Gagnon88 (talk) 14:39, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

Traded players season stats...

Please do not undo season stats of players that have been traded. Since they are no longer with the organization, the stats are to be included. This has been the wiki standard for many seasons on end now. Cheers if you would like to raise the issue or discover this practice, you can go to the project's discussion page here. Triggerbit (talk) 20:03, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

I have already raised the issue here for clarification. Happy editing! Dolovis (talk) 20:07, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

Error

It appears my account has been blocked in error. I have made no disruptive edits, and I have received no warnings on my talk page to alert me about any concerns about my editing. I have not received a note on my talk page to telling me why I have been blocked. I have checked my block log, and no new blocks are listed, leading me to believe that this might be an "autoblock"? The block appeared as I signed on to my account using the WiFi at a McDonalds restaurant. A quick unblock would be appreciated (with maybe note stating that the block was made in error would also be nice). Cheers! Dolovis (talk) 19:22, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

We will need the autoblock message with ID and IP address in order to look and see what we can do. Nick (talk) 19:54, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
It seems to have fixed itself. Must have been a problem with the Public IP address I was using, but I have no problems with my account now. Dolovis (talk) 23:03, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

I added some... thought you might like to use them: DMighton (talk) 20:36, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for your photos. They are much appreciated. Would it be possible for you to upload your photos directly to Commons? This would stream-line the process for using your photos across all Wiki-sites, and would eliminate the need to copy the image from Misplaced Pages to the Commons, delete the image from Misplaced Pages, and then re-add the image into the article. You might also think about opening a free Flickr account (if you do not have one already), which makes it easy to publish your photos with a Creative Commons licence, and also allows other editors to perform semi-automated uploads into the Commons. Dolovis (talk) 20:50, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

DMighton (talk) 20:37, 6 December 2013 (UTC) NM the Tinordi thing... there is a Team USA pic of him with the same name... thought you had it up... DMighton (talk) 20:40, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

They are on commons... just hadn't switched over to the "Now Commons" template. DMighton (talk) 21:16, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Chris Ferazzoli

The article Chris Ferazzoli has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable hockey player, played only a handful of games out of the low minors. Unsourced BLP; only source a casual mention failing WP:ROUTINE. Fails WP:NHOCKEY, WP:BIO.

Long time no see. My moves followed the rules at WP:RUS. Why did you revert them? Have you read WP:RUS?
