*When a reliable newspaper bases a published article on interviews with people, that article does not become less reliable because we might not accept their direct statements as reliable sources. The newspaper exercises editorial control, which means we have better reasons for trusting the statements it chooses to include than we otherwise would. And when I examined the statements supporting the claim currently in our article but being challenged by the newspaper article, it seems to me that none of the sources that support it is in fact reliable. This is now being discussed at ], where I have posted specific analysis of the currently cited refs. ] ] 13:11, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

It should be added to his page- he also went to College of San Mateo, a California Jr College

How the process of publishing an article works.

Hello, I am writing an article on a particular subject that has never yet been written about. It will contain the definition of a buzz word I happen to own the rights to and thought a proper definition of the word I created should be made available. As Misplaced Pages is a renowned site for trustworthy information, I assumed this would be the place to do it. Unfortunately, as I am trying to complete this task with some haste, I am trying to get a clear idea of the exact process this article will go through to be published. Would it be possible to get the answer to this? If so, thank you very much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:8:9F00:AFA:9CD1:555A:DD75:E98F (talk) 03:16, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages is not here to be a promotional platform for your "work". In order to qualify for an article multiple independent reliable sources must have first covered the subject, and when sources do cover the subject, someone other than you will need to be the one to create an article. You can submit the sources to via the requested article process WP:RA to suggest that someone create the article. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 03:22, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Since the particular subject has never yet been written about, the article would not remain published in Misplaced Pages:Article space. You may want to consider the options listed in Misplaced Pages:Alternative outlets. -- Jreferee (talk) 04:20, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

    Sandboxes

Hello, simple question really. How do I create more than one Misplaced Pages Sandbox? I already have one, and would like another one for another test project. I've seen other users have multiple sandboxes, so I am wondering how do I create another separate one?

    Thanks, R96Skinner (talk) 03:24, 13 January 2014 (UTC).

Just call them User:R96Skinner/first title, User:R96Skinner/whatever you want to call the second one, or whatever. --David Biddulph (talk) 03:30, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Right, got it! Thank you very much David Biddulph, appreciate your quick response. Apologies for being such a noob, haha. R96Skinner (talk) 06:40, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

    Mysterious image darkening

Hi, I realize this may be a bit more Commons-oriented, but I was hoping to get some help here. I uploaded this photo to Commons tonight and then uploaded a crop, but as you can see, the cropped version is far darker than the original. I have no idea what caused this, since it looked normal on my computer. Can anyone help? Delaywaves • talk 03:32, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

User:Kintetsubuffalo or Misplaced Pages:Graphics Lab/Photography workshop may be able to help. -- Jreferee (talk) 04:14, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
@Delaywaves, this can be an effect of a faulty picture editor or auto AutoCorrect, faulty AutoCorrect or a mixture of any of these. I would recommend you to use good applications like Photoshop, etc. However, a freed deal yet good one will be PicMonkey. Hope, it helps. --Ankit Maity «Review Me» 12:56, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

    Text of deleted article

I read somewhere that this is the place to ask to gain access to the text of a deleted article. I'd like to read what was written before deletion in the article entitled, "Redundant array of inexpensive nodes", but I don't know enough about this process to know if it is even available without asking. I won't try republishing an article by the same name. I'm just interested in what Misplaced Pages had on it before it was deleted. Thanks. CopyrightX (talk) 03:48, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

If we were to make the text of deleted articles available on request, there would be little point in deleting them in the first place. There are sometimes grounds for making deleted articles available to individuals, but curiosity isn't one of them. Judging from the deletion discussion , you wouldn't find anything in the article that you couldn't get from Rainfinity and/or VMWare/EMC themselves. AndyTheGrump (talk) 04:00, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Interesting... So I guess the old, "nothing is ever REALLY deleted..." explanation is just a myth? If it's not available even upon asking, then it's not really available (ergo, deleted), right? At least, not generally. So it seems to me. Thanks for the comment, though. CopyrightX (talk) 05:03, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
The deleted Misplaced Pages article appears to have been copied from totalaccessdatarecovery.jux.com, so it probably could not be userfied. -- Jreferee (talk) 04:08, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for mentioning this. Both links helpful. CopyrightX (talk) 05:03, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Such requests can be made at WP:REFUND, or at the talk page of any member of Category:Misplaced Pages administrators willing to provide copies of deleted articles. However the copyright issue might be an obstacle in either case. DES 16:59, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

    Notability discussion

Hi, is there a central place in Misplaced Pages for requesting opinion/discussion on the notability of a subject? I thought there was one somewhere but now I can't seem to find it. 86.176.209.112 (talk) 03:53, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

You can get an answer here at the help desk. What is the subject? -- Jreferee (talk) 04:02, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Hey person editing from 86.176.209.112. The Misplaced Pages:Notability/Noticeboard was closed in September due to this discussion. Per above, you might try posting here.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:05, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Oh, OK, the article is Lakeside Leisure Complex. Does the fact that the BDO World Darts Championship is held there every year make this place notable enough for an article? 86.176.209.112 (talk) 04:27, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
If you are trying to establish WP:GNG notability for Lakeside Leisure Centre, I doubt that is going to happen. I could not even find a website claiming that Lakeside Leisure Complex is a hotel, entertainment and leisure complex. The Lakeside Leisure Complex article should be moved to 'Lakeside Country Club" for which there is plenty of source material. -- Jreferee (talk) 05:20, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

    Page attacked by malicious editing

    America's Got Talent (season 3)

This Misplaced Pages entry has been edited to have deliberate misinformation. If you are capable of restoring to a previous save instead of undoing the malicious edit, please do so. It is also my recommendation that the person who made these edits be closely monitored and/or blocked from future participation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Terastas (talkcontribs) 06:32, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Could you be specific about what you believe is not correct? I couldn't find any non-reverted vandalism in the last few edits of the page, so knowing what to look for could be beneficial. (I also skimmed the article itself.) If you find misinformation, you can correct it, assuming your changes are verifiable. - Purplewowies (talk) 07:56, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

    Checking a user's activity

Once in a while I find an unhelpful edit has been made to an article that I am watching, revert it, and check to see what else the editor who made it has been doing. Sometimes I find that he has made similar edits to other articles, and checking these may show that all, some, or none of them have been reverted. I may then revert some or all of the rest myself. Other editors will have been doing, and will continue to do, the same. This is obviously inefficient.

Is there a recommended method of dealing with such situations, so as to save a lot of duplicated effort?

It doesn't really matter, but this posting is inspired by edits made by 118.195.65.10. I believe that his edits have been well-intentioned but some of them have been misguided. Maproom (talk) 09:39, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

If the vandalism is serious or persistent, you can report it at WP:AIV. Admins who monitor that page can protect pages and block users if either measure seems appropriate. DES 17:01, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Thank you, I'll take a note of that for when I next encounter a minor vandal. But in this particular case, it clearly wasn't vandalism. I would call it "overenthusiasm". Maproom (talk) 17:16, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

    How to install a link

There is a definite link between the Wiki on Otto Liebermann (written by me) and the Misplaced Pages "Category: People interned in the Isle of Man during World War II". Because of the link,I have tried in several ways to install an actual link, but failed to do so. Could anyone please tell me how; or maybe even carry it out? Thank you ... JeffDellbart (talk) 10:29, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Jeff, you appear to have added it fine! It's showing up in the categories section at the bottom of the page and in the category page itself. Samwalton9 (talk) 10:36, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

    SafeSquid

This article is about software use and the author has tried to put its use in terms of "Content Filtering Internet Proxy and provides a Browser Based GUI" in the article and some other uses, the article also contains images which are not uploaded clearly. Can any one respond to this article? The use of this software is under proprietary software license see Software license. Nechlison (talk) 12:28, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

The article reads very much like an advertisement and a lot of it can be trimmed. The program may well be notable though, with coverage in TechRadar for example. Samwalton9 (talk) 12:33, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

    Is this true?

    http://dissentingdemocrat.wordpress.com/2014/01/12/abby-martin-banned-on-wikipedia/#respond 96.52.164.89 (talk) 14:15, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Well, being banned is not the same as not having an article here. But let's not pick that nit right now. The link Abby Martin redirects to RT (TV network). The last version of the article before it was turned into a redirect is here. And the discussion that determined that the article should be a redirect is here. And it looks like she fell just short of being notable enough, from my quick read of that page. So, you could find some more solid sources and take the case to deletion review. Dismas| 14:26, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
But, no it is not true that "every FOX personality gets a page and we discriminate against everyone else". (and if you see some of the FOX personality pages, you can bet they wish they DIDNT have one) -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 23:59, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

    Remove this page?

Talk:The_Collected_Works_of_C._G._Jung/Comments is a one-entry page commenting on a Talk page. What it asks for was done long ago. It seems to me it should be removed. Can somebody do that, or tell me how to do it, or tell me why it shouldn't be done? Lou Sander (talk) 14:27, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

A subpage of a talk page isn't going to do any damage so I don't know that it's worth worrying about. RJFJR (talk) 14:31, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
I basically agree, but there's now an automatically-generated line on the talk page, with a link, that says "This page has comments" or something like that. If they follow it, it takes them to this worthless stub of a page. Why steer people down a blind alley? Lou Sander (talk) 16:32, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

    Birthday

I have just changed the below page many times to reflect the correct birthday for Andrew Niccol. For some reason the birthday keeps reverting back to January 1st, 1960 which is incorrect.

The correct date is June 10th, 1964.

    Andrew Niccol

Is there a way to have these changes remain correct?

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.145.67.2 (talk) 16:07, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Source it? The current birthdate is not sourced, but if you had a source other editors might be less inclined to revert. - Purplewowies (talk) 16:11, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
You also seem to have repeatedly broken the infobox when you changed the date. - Purplewowies (talk) 16:14, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
The article appears not to have any references except IMDB, which is not a reliable source, and an entry from his school which has link rot. In other words, it doesn't have any valid references. I have nominated the article for deletion, not because he isn't notable, but because the article, without references, violates WP:BLP guidelines. If someone adds references, I am willing to withdraw the deletion nomination. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:02, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
So to be clear because your not willing to do any work you think its best if deleted? Why would you not put in some minimal effort yourself first? I hope editors are not really this lazy!!! -- Moxy (talk) 01:31, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
Editors are volunteers and don't always have the time. I've been guilty of drive-by tagging when I don't have time to put in the work. - Purplewowies (talk) 02:20, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
Drive by tagging is one thing. But starting an AfD discussion will more ore less compel other volunteers to put in time. Therefore the instructions specify that an editor not create one without going through the fairly limited steps listed at WP:BEFORE. Omitting this step repeatedly might be construed as disruptive editing. DES 23:13, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
(edit conflict) References added, including one that supports the corrected birth date. See WP:BEFORE before makign Afd nominatiosn, please. DES 01:33, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

    why was I deleted

Hi Misplaced Pages people I am trying to understand why the Misplaced Pages entry about me was deleted. I didn't create it but its deletion raises questions. My name is Alex Duval Smith and I am a journalist. Thanks Alex — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dsdsal (talkcontribs) 16:37, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

As far as I can tell, the only article we've had on an 'Alex Duval Smith' was deleted back in 2008, as it gave "No indication that the article may meet guidelines for inclusion" The relevant guideline is Misplaced Pages:Notability (people). AndyTheGrump (talk) 16:48, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
I looked at the deleted article. All it said was that Alex Duval Smith the Observer's Africa correspondent and previously worked for the Guardian, and the the Independent in Johannesburg. There was no claim to significance at all. GB fan 17:09, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Borderline article in Misplaced Pages space

Just came across Misplaced Pages:Perfect Hideaways. Should it be deleted or moved to mainspace? PS: if you reply please notify me by including a link to my userpage in your response, or by leaving a note on my talkpage. ~ benzband (talk) 16:57, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

You are correct, It does not belong in Misplaced Pages space. In fact it is obviously an attempt at an article draft. I suspect is is basically spam, but it just might be a notable firm. Either it should be sourced, de-puffed, and moved to mainspace, or deleted. I will look into it further. DES 17:15, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Hi Benzband, I have nominated the page for speedy deletion due to significance. It had been hidden there for over half a year, well done in finding it. Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 17:16, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Calling it "borderline" is generous. It is highly promotional, and has no valid references. Maproom (talk) 17:25, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
And I have removed the speedy deletion tag. That is an WP:CSD#A7 tag, and so does not apply outside of article space. Moreover although promotional it seems to contain possible claims of significance. DES 17:30, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Feel free to solve it your way. My instinct tells me it should be deleted, but I see from your userpage that you are an admin on this project and apparently very interested in procedures so I look forward yo seeing you deal with it. I think I can predict the result. Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 17:44, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
If i had to bet, I would expect it to be deleted also. But it has been her for months with no harm being done. I think it is worth spending a little WP:BEFORE time seeing if I can create a properly sourced article. If I can't I will delete it or put it up for deletion, probably through WP:MFD which is not very busy. DES 17:51, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Okay, thankyou DES, Taketa, and Maproom! benzband (talk) 18:29, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
I agree with User:DESiegel that the article is potentially keepable. It should be uncontroversial to move it to main space for further work (or for regular deletion nomination, if people don't like it). It looks like a new user placed it in Misplaced Pages space by mistake. An MFD sounds like overkill. EdJohnston (talk) 19:04, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Apparently there was an objection. Another admin deleted it under WP:CSD#G11 as promotional. I have asked if there is an objection to restoring and userfying to work on. DES 19:49, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

    My page lissette garcia

Hi There, Well I think I ruined my page. I noticed someone had made a page about me, and I logged in to make a few edits, but the page is all over the place now, since I have no idea what I'm doing. I even removed the picture by mistake. If you may help me. THanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lssttgar003 (talkcontribs) 17:13, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Your changes have been reverted by another editor, so the article is back to how it was before you edited. The problems with your edits were several. 1) You added an image (picture) name that apparently doesn't exist under that name on wikipedia. It would need to be uploaded first, or the name corrected if it has been uploaded under a different file name. 2) you added unsourced content. We need to have a citation to a reliable source before adding content, particularly about a living person. This is for your protection, to prevent hoaxes and unsourced defamation or errors. (after all while I assume you are who you say you are, no one here can be sure of that). 3) Since the article is about you, our authobiography and Conflict of interest guidelines strongly discourage you from directly editing the article. Please read the linked pages for more detail.
You should edit Talk:Lissette Garcia and provide suggested additions or changes and citations to sources that support those statements. Then someone else cna review them and make appropriate changes to the article. You can use {{edit request}} to notify people that you have made such suggestions. DES 17:24, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Oh a minor issue of formatting. Some of your edits started with several spaces, no doubt to attempt to indent a paragraph. On Misplaced Pages, a space at the start of a line triggers a special display mode used from program code and other things, but that doesn't display orfinary text well. And Infoboxes should normally only have a single image. DES 17:26, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
The article would be improved by having a picture of its subject. If you can indicate where, on the internet, we can find a picture of you, with a copyright release statement that allows people to reproduce it as they wish, then I or another editor can add it to the article. If there is no picture like that on the web, but you own the copyright to a suitable picture, you can upload it to Misplaced Pages Commons, perhaps by using this form. But this is quite a palaver, which I am reluctant to inflict on a new user of Misplaced Pages. Maproom (talk) 17:36, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

    Julian A. Pitt-Rivers

You might like to know that: His 2nd wife was my aunt Margarita Larios daughter of the Marquis of Marzales. You have her name wrong — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.32.61.115 (talk) 18:39, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

I fixed the header to identify the article being discussed. Our article currently identifies his second wife as 'Margareita de Lazales'. One of the article's references is the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, which I checked. Regarding Pitt-Rivers' second wife it says: "as on 22 September 1955 he married Margarita Larios y Fernandes de Villavicencio, the former wife of Miguel, duke of Primo Rivera." So it seems to me that the poster's comment is correct, and the second wife's name should be corrected in the article. It should be changed to 'Margarita Larios y Fernandes de Vallacicencio'. The 'de Lazales' that we now have seems to be completely wrong. EdJohnston (talk) 18:57, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

    Eric Tillman Biography page

I would like to report Hirolovesswords for removing links and going out of his way to defame the character of Eric Tillman. He should be banned from posting on that page as all he has tried to do is write negative, derogatory things and removed anything positive that has been sourced. I plan on trying to contact Mr. Tillman personally to let him know, sadly, this person with a very clear chip on their shoulder is being rediculously vindicive, writing about things that are not relevent to try to sway reader opinion in a negative light as opposed to an objective/balanced perspective. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Smith724 (talkcontribs) 20:24, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

    Hi,
I think the help desk may not be the right place for this kind of discussion. The help desk is for questions about the operation of Misplaced Pages and how to use the site, not for dispute resolution. Maybe one of the pages linked at Misplaced Pages:Dispute Resolution would be a better place for addressing this issue? Thanks!

    Misplaced Pages version of Cat-A-Lot

Do we have a tool that would make changing categories of a number of articles/categories easy? I like how on Commons we the commons:Help:Gadget-Cat-a-lot works. I recently created Category:Noble families by nationality and would like to move the entries from Category:Noble families there, but after getting used to the time-saving cat-a-lot at Commons I don't feel like wasting half of my hour doing this manually... PS. If there are any replies here please WP:ECHO me, otherwise I'll never see them. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 20:43, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

    User:Piotrus: WP:HotCat? - Purplewowies (talk) 21:26, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
User:Purplewowies: Unless I am doing something wrong, HotCat doesn't work in category space. I want to be able to (re)categorize article straight from the category page, without opening individual target pages - just like I can do with cat-a-lot on Commons. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 23:51, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, then, I don't know much about HotCat, but I thought it would do what you want. I'll try looking for others. - Purplewowies (talk) 23:55, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
User:Piotrus: Look at WP:AWB. It looks like it will let you make a list of pages in Category X and then automatically edit them all to change to Category Y. RudolfRed (talk) 00:17, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

    Philanthropy/charities

What are the guidelines for including philanthropy or charities on a BLP? For example, if the subject makes contributions to many charities, are they all worthy of inclusion? HtownCat (talk) 21:17, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Are all worthy of inclusion? per WP:UNDUE no. And particularly not if they haven't been covered by reliably published third party sources. The self interest of either the subject or the donor in making claims of support would generally be unduly self serving to source to their own websites WP:SPS. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 21:30, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
In general, mere routine contributions are probably unworthy of mention at all. Donation of significant effort, or holding of official position in the organization, or contributions much larger than the norm. might be worth mentioning, if covered by independent reliable sources, in my view. DES 21:49, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Contributions the size that get a hospital building named after you or a named chair at a university or an annual summer concert series under your name, etc. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 23:45, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. So is there any hard rule on this? There are smallish donations that end up in the press that I'm assuming aren't really worth mentioning, but is something around $50,000 considered "substantial?" Or should it be $250,000, or $1 million? HtownCat (talk) 16:19, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

    Beyoncé Album incorrect information!

In the Beyoncé Album Wiki page it has been stated and I quote " six days after release it had sold one million copies worldwide" referring to the latest Beyoncé album.. This information is incorrect according to the Billboard official website. There are 17 albums so far to achieve the 1million first week sales, unfortunately the Beyoncé album is NOT one of them. The last artist to achieve this is Lady Gaga and before that it was Taylor Swift.

I understand that there are numerous websites that supporting the Beyoncé 1million first week sales rumour, but the most accurate and only official information regarding album sales are from the official Billboard website.

Below is a link to the billboard page and specifically the list of 17 artists and albums that have sold 1million albums in first week sales starting with Whitney Houston 'The Bodyguard' album:

    http://www.billboard.com/photos/426851/albums-that-sold-1-million-in-one-week?i=9488

Many thanks Moses Mahgoub — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mosesmahgoub (talkcontribs) 21:43, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi @Mosesmahgoub:, the article lead is repeating information found further down in the article, which describes 1 million sales on iTunes and cites this article. The album appears to have been released on December 13, 2013, and the article date is December 18, 2013. I'm adding the word "digital" to the statements with the hope that this will clarify things. Regards, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 22:07, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
The Billboard page deals with albums which have sold one million in their first week in the US, whereas Beyoncé sold one million in its first week worldwide. Adabow (talk) 22:50, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

    Abby Martin page DELETED

I was wondering why the page on Abby Martin was deleted twice.

I had come to trust Misplaced Pages as my "go-to" source for human intelligence and information.

However, if a page is deleted because having a news show online, being a respected artist and journalist does not warrant a wikipedia page, yet starring in a porn movie does, then my faith in the integrity of Misplaced Pages takes a big hit. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.174.241.175 (talk) 02:18, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

    Fleemish Search

Is it possible to search and find every place where User:Guy Macon has used the word "fleemishes" on Misplaced Pages without returning any of the places where other editors might have used it?

If so, if it possible to do the same search limited to Guy Macon's edit comments? --Guy Macon (talk) 06:06, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

For your first question, as far as I know, there isn't. I might be wrong and there might be a tool out there that searches a user's edits, but I couldn't find one. If there is one, hopefully someone else can point it out. You can still search for all instances of "fleemishes" on Misplaced Pages, though; naturally this returns all instances of the word "fleemishes", but you're the only one who has used it by the looks of it ;P
Better news for your second question, though! There's a nice tool for searching edit summaries. If you go to the bottom of your contributions list, you'll see a link for "Edit summary search", which will take you to a page where you can search a user's edit summaries. Here's your search. Hope this helps! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 06:23, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages is the free encyclopaedia which anyone may edit - that is, anybody in the world (except a few people who have a history of editing disruptively). If you can edit an article to improve it, you are very welcome to do so; but I advise you to understand a few policies first:
    • Misplaced Pages is an encyclopaedia, not an advocacy site, no matter how worthy the cause;
    • all articles are required to be written from a neutral point of view: if there are reliably reported controversies about a subject, they should be discussed in the article, but without taking sides;
    • and ideally all information (and certainly, all controversial information) should be referenced to reliable published sources.
If you do edit an article but break one of those principles, your contribution will probably be reverted by another editor: not censorship or control, just the rules that the community of Misplaced Pages editors have adopted to govern this community project. --ColinFine (talk) 12:35, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
Chemtrail conspiracy theory is what the OP is asking about. We can write about conspiracy theories, but we can't make a conspiracy theory into fact without multiple reliable published sources stating it is fact. After all, exceptional claims require exceptional sources, and conspiracy theories certainly fall under "exceptional claims". Astronaut (talk) 17:24, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

    Fire Department Page Photos

Hello, I am working on updating a lot of page for fire departments. I have been told by multiple different agencies that since their images are in the public domain, I am more than welcome to use them. Is there any criteria in WP:NONFREE that these fall under that would except me from having to use WP:CONSENT?

Additionally can someone help me understand the process for getting WP:CONSENT? If I send an email to someone containing one of the examples shown here: WP:ERP and they reply "That is okay with us. Go ahead and use them." (or something to that affect) is that enough for me to forward on permissions-en@wikimedia.org or do I need to have them actually fill out the WP:CONSENT form? Thanks in advance for any help! --Zackmann08 (talk) 16:09, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

Everything created in recent decades in the US is automatically copyrighted. A written statement from the copyright holder is required to either grant a license, or put a work in the public domain. Spoken agreements don't count. Also, a statement in an email such as "go ahead and use it" could be interpreted as go ahead and use it on the Misplaced Pages site, but since Misplaced Pages content may be reused under the terms of the CC-BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL licenses, that isn't good enough. The person who wrote "go ahead and use it" might not be anticipating such reuse. Jc3s5h (talk) 16:22, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
(edit conflict) If the images are truly in the public domain, they are free and can be freely used. However the only way a recent image of this sort can be legally in the public domain is if the photographer or copyright holder formally released it in writing to the public domain. (Or if the image was created by an employee of the US Federal Government as part of his or her job, works of the Federal Government are not subject to copyright. Few if any US States or other governments have a similar policy.)
In other cases I think WP:CONSENT or something fairly similar would be needed. At the least there would have to be an explicit statement that anyone could reuse or modify the image for any purpose, including commercial use. And a statement that this was done by the copyright owner or under the owner's authority. I'm sorry if this is a problem. DES 16:24, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6.9 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Misplaced Pages, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Misplaced Pages itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. Samwalton9 (talk) 16:51, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
What is an NSC - one of these NSCs perhaps? Considering that the OP is from South Africa, a reasonable guess might be National Senior Certificate, a South African educational certificate, presumably issued by your school. The first step would be to ask your school about what to do; failing that, the provincial education department for your province (whose contact details are listed here). The service though varies between provinces - Gauteng is not helpful, so Google is your friend; Western cape provideds a phone number in their FAQ; Eastern Cape is a little harder to find. incorrect photo on Ruth Draper page

The top photo of Ruth Draper on her wiki page is not the monologue artist. It is an early 20th century socialite named Margaret Preston Draper. The Library of Congress for several years had this photo misidentified in its collection, which is likely how it ended up on Draper's wikipedia entry. I contacted the LOC and they researched and corrected the error. So now, if you visit the LOC photo library and search for "Margaret Preston Draper," you find this photo.

    Biased portrayed of Yassir Henry

I strongly feel you need to consult more sources with this page and be more careful with phrasing. First off, the core source cited in this article is the Krog/Samuel book which has received criticism for its inaccurate portrayals of testimonies including those of Mr Yazier Henry (the author of Country of My Skull did not even spell his name right, she took he inaccurate spelling from the TRC. Acceptable spellings are Yazir and Yazier). The sentence involving Mr. Henry, "His whereabouts had been revealed by Umkhonto we Sizwe fighter Yassir Henry, who claimed that the police had threatened to kill his mother and four-year-old nephew if he did not betray Fransch," makes his account sound incredulous or up to debate which I feel is incredibly disrespectful to him. His account is the official record and it is not up to debate that the apartheid regime tortured him physically and mentally for this information. He should not be defined in this manner and I truly feel you should do more research as well as consult his writing on this matter which I will link you to. Otherwise you disrespect a great human being who fought tirelessly at a young age against the extreme forces of oppression that was the apartheid state.

Yazir's account begins on page 107

If we say a hymn tune is a "song", then it's not italicized (per MOSTITLES, as you point out), it's just put in quote marks. Thank you. I will follow up on your other suggestions, too. (You can mark this one SOLVED). --71.178.50.222 (talk) 21:22, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

    Scott Davie (pianist)

Hi there I've just had an email from HasteurBot about the article Scott Davie (pianist) it was assessed as C-Class and HasteurBot has asked me to edit the article and improve it. I'm not sure what is required, could you give me any suggestions on how I can best improve the article. It would be a shame to delete the page as the pianist is very worthy of inclusion

Thanks Fastclick (talk) 02:12, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

The notice you received from h was about the Articles for creation article you created, Misplaced Pages talk:Articles for creation/Scott Davie (Pianist), not about Scott Davie (pianist). Scott Davie (pianist) is not up for deletion. GB fan 02:17, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
(e/c) A quick look showed that there are at least two reviews from nationally prominent media sources and so chances of "deletion" are pretty close to nil, so I wouldn't worry about that.
However, Misplaced Pages is a work in progress, and improvements are almost always possible. Adding additional content from reliably published sources, taking and releasing a picture to illustrate the article (or finding an image that is already appropriately licensed , see WP:COPYRIGHT), tuning up the prose, etc. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 02:23, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Phew Thanks for the explanation, I will endeavour to continually update and add to the article. Fastclick (talk) 03:37, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome to the Misplaced Pages help desk. The help desk is a place to ask questions about how to use Misplaced Pages, not general questions related to other things. For general questions, you can ask to see if anyone knows over at Misplaced Pages's reference desk. However, your question is very generalized and the answer most likely differs between colleges. I recommend looking into your college's resources, or talking to your college's administration about the process. Each college's policies are different and the process is most likely unique in your case. Hope this helps, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 06:31, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

I apologize if this is a misinterpretation, but it is our aim here not to do people's homework for them, but to merely aid them in doing it themselves. Letting someone else do your homework does not help you learn nearly as much as doing it yourself. Please attempt to solve the problem or answer the question yourself first. That link doesn't work for me, unfortunately. It seems to lead to Altrincham FC's official site archive but I can't reach it via your link or other routes. By "chat" do you mean it's a forum or message board of some kind? If so, we can't use it as a source. Unfortunately it looks like the OP is editing from a dynamic IP, so a talkback pointing him at this discussion is unlikely to be any more successful than the one I left for him last time. Disclaimer at the top of an article

I have heavily edited an article (https://en.wikipedia.org/Charles_Rose_%28architect%29) that stated: This article contains wording that promotes the subject in a subjective manner without imparting real information. Please remove or replace such wording and instead of making proclamations about a subject's importance, use facts and attribution to demonstrate that importance. (October 2011)

Now that the article contains verifiable factual information only, how does one request the article be reviewed and the disclaimer removed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Margauxfischer (talkcontribs) 15:43, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

That tag is added because of the {{peacock|date=October 2011}} template at the top of the page, and anyone can remove this if they think the issues are fixed :) Samwalton9 (talk) 15:50, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
(edit conflict) That notice is generated from the template {{peacock|date=October 2011}}. If you are confident that you have fixed the issue, you can simply remove that from the article. No special review is required. DES 15:52, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
Having just been there to edit the article, I wouldnt suggest removing the tag just yet. It still reads as an advertorial and not an encyclopedia article.
Pretty much a complete re-write is still needed. I would suggest presenting the information in a chronological order: In 19XX he did Y. The reaction was Z (source to third party coverage of the reaction). Later that year he received Z award for Project Q (source to third party coverage of the award). He began teaching at University in 20XX and was named Chair of Blah in 20XX. (source that verifies the event) The AAA Building completed in 20XX was ridiculed for being "quote". (source of the quote) etc.
You will need to include ALL points of view and not just the glowing ones.-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 16:07, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Maurice O Driscoll ex football player in league of ireland

    Hi Misplaced Pages

I am wondering why my details have been deleted even from league of ireland players list? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.97.190.142 (talk) 23:03, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I'm not sure what list you're referring to. Maybe this category? In order for someone to be added to a category, there must be an article written about them. Although I'm unclear if your name is Maurice O'Driscoll, or Maurice O. Driscoll, there doesn't appear to be an article about either of you. I do see a reference to "Maurice O'Driscoll" here, but as you will notice, the name redlinks, which means there is no article. Anyhow, the more information you can provide about what list you are referring to, what years you played, etc., will be helpful for anyone who might come around to help. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 23:30, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
Presumably this Maurice O'Driscoll. I can't find anywhere on WP where it was removed. (Not Category:League of Ireland players which lists 1,371 players having pages, but not Maurice O'Driscoll.) ~E:71.20.250.51 (talk) 23:45, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
Further research suggests that the article Maurice O'Driscoll had an article circa 2009, but there were some problematic contributions from banned editors. The article was eventually deleted October 31, 2013 by @GiantSnowman: for "Expired PROD, concern was: Fails WP:GNG and WP:NFOOTY. Has not played first-team football in a fully professional league or received significant media coverage." So if the gent's article was removed, so might have been his spot in the category. How to announce a radio program about Misplaced Pages

Dear editors: I am listening to an amazing hour-long radio program analysis of Misplaced Pages's effect on the world, on CBC Radio One. It's called "The Great Book of Knowledge, Part 1", with Philip Coulter speaking to moderator Paul Kennedy in the program Ideas. I wanted to report it, but the closest page I could find is Misplaced Pages:Press coverage, and it seems to only be geared to print sources. Is there another spot to list reports in other types of media? —Anne Delong (talk) 02:52, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

PS - Since this is Canada's largest radio network, with 4.3 million listeners per week, it would be interesting to know if there is a sudden influx of new editors from Canada in the next few days. —Anne Delong (talk) 02:57, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
there appears to be Misplaced Pages:Misplaced Pages on TV and radio although that seems to have stopped in 2011. (I would just use the {{episode}} template and place it on Misplaced Pages:Press coverage) . Also, if they talked about any specific pages you can tag those pages with the {{press}} tag. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 03:10, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

    US Politicians' parties customarily mentioned?

Per Talk:The_Record_(Bergen_County) I forgot to put the parties of both the Democrat and Republican who had exposes done by this paper and an editor removed the one I did put on and hasn't responded to my comment both should be added. (He often won't respond to me.) I don't want to "edit war" so need to know if it's customary to mention US politicians parties so I can put that in. In this case it is relevant to indicate that the paper is nonpartisan. Carolmooredc (Talkie-Talkie) 03:54, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

The whole thing looks like a WP:COATRACK - there is no indication that these stories are in anyway important in the history of the paper. It would require third party sources commenting on the importance or awards for these stories for it to merit mention (and not merely repetitions of the stories the Record has printed). It is an article about the newspaper after all. At this point, the only potentially appropriate content would be something like "The Record filed a FoIA request that brought to the publicin Jan 2014 e-mails that Gov Christie's cabinet had sent connecting them to the bridge closure." Mission Viejo

    Current Mission Viejo infobox photo
WPPilot aerial Mission Viejo photo (proposed infobox photo)

I placed a aerial photo of the city of Mission Viejo, on the page for the city Mission Viejo and for some reason a user is dead set on removing it, to replace it with a photo of a few homes, on the lake and a mountain 50 miles away. The user simply removes the valuable aerial photo and provides NO reason whatsoever for the removal of a valuable aerial photo. Aerial photos on Misplaced Pages are rare and in just about every city in Orange county at least that is the norm. The user has no reasoning whatsoever for his actions, I posted clear and respectful dialog to explain that everyone should be able to benefit from the aerial photo, and the user just removes it altogether. Thanks in advance for help, WPPilot 04:23, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

The current Mission Viejo infobox photo has consensus to be in the infobox due meeting WP:LEADIMAGE and it being in the Infobox for a while. If you want to change the InfoBox image, you need to get consensus at Talk:Mission Viejo, California using the standards in WP:LEADIMAGE. After a 30 day RfC, you post a request at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard/Requests for closure to have the discussion closed. -- Jreferee (talk) 04:54, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
"Infobox photo" is misleading. While all the city's on southern Orange County have aerial shots as info box photos, this was more about the summary removal of a quality photo from the page altogether with the replacement photo not in any way representing the area that it represents without any effort to consider the editors objective, "to improve the story". While that is a artistic photo, it clearly gives the reader the idea that Mission Viejo is a lakefront community that sees snow. Nothing could be further from reality.WPPilot 05:11, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
The description at File:Snow at Lake Mission Viejo 005.jpg refers to it as mountain unusually covered in snow, so that might go against the photo being a "visual representation of the topic" per WP:LEADIMAGE. In your discussion, just stick to the advice on selecting a lead image listed at WP:LEADIMAGE and how each of the images meets or does not meet that advise. -- Jreferee (talk) 07:13, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

In view of the public funding that Misplaced Pages uses, how is the article approval process kept fair?

It seems logical that since public contributions are solicited and used to fund the operation of Misplaced Pages (WP), the individuals and qualifications of those who approve what the public is able to read on WP should be made both public and accessible to any reader who requests such information.

If that logic is somehow flawed, it would be good for WP to explain why it thinks so.

If the logic is correct and agreed, then I make a formal request that the article approval process, along with the names, backgrounds and qualifications of the admin people responsible for said process be made public on WP's home page.

I further request that WP state what safeguards have been put in place to ensure that the article approval process remains consistently unbiased and free of racial, political, religious, national or any other prejudicial or personal influence and restriction. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.10.251.168 (talk) 04:51, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

There is no mandatory "article approval process". Anyone can sign up for an account and then create an article which will appear in "mainspace" (i.e., on Misplaced Pages) as soon as the Save button is clicked. --NeilN 04:57, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
And while admins may delete articles, they have no special powers in the creation of them. Also, I still haven't gotten my check from the Foundation, either for deleting or writing articles. Drmies (talk) 05:00, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
And before the IP asks, article deletions are usually made after a public discussion or notice or if the article strictly matches our criteria for speedy deletion. Any admin deleting articles for personal reasons would be quickly shown the door. --NeilN 05:09, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
For the most part, Misplaced Pages uses quantity of coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject to determine whether Misplaced Pages should have an article on a topic. (See WP:GNG) It doesn't take a whole lot of qualifications to look at a quantity of news, magazine, and book coverage on a topic to determine whether there is enough information from which to summarize into a Misplaced Pages article having a few paragraphs. Do you have a particular article topic for which you would like the Help Desk to look at to determine whether Misplaced Pages can have an article on it? -- Jreferee (talk) 05:03, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
Note that Misplaced Pages's privacy policy forbids compelled disclosure of editor identities or personal information except in very limited circumstances. Note also that editors have no information about financial contributions, and so cannot be influenced by who has or has not made such contributions. DES 10:12, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

    Stockton Beach

Please look into the Stockton Beach article per theherald.com postings: January 14, 2014 "Recently the Herald ran a couple of stories about Misplaced Pages and one of their volunteers who will not allow "his" Stockton beach information to be edited. ("Taking myth to the Max" Herald 7/12/13)." -- Jreferee (talk) 06:51, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

Well, firstly, there's Misplaced Pages:Verifiability, not truth, but to me it looks like sour grapes on the part of the letter writer.
His comment that "Try and include any of the above as part of Misplaced Pages and your computer will more than Iikely be banned due to, I quote, ‘‘an act of vandalism and sock puppetry’’." suggests that he used an IP address to try and edit, then when he was reverted went to his local library to try and re-enter the info, hence the next paragraph of "Submit the edit on a library or school computer and that computer may be banned along with the public’s right to contribute to other subjects within Misplaced Pages."
Also, let's not forget that the public doesn't have any right to edit Misplaced Pages, despite being the encyclopedia anybody can edit. Chaheel Riens (talk) 10:50, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
All that may be true, but it looks to me as if the sources now used in the article for this issue are quite questionable. I posted a one sentence addition citing the original story (not the letter) and was promptly reverted. More views at Talk:Stockton Beach would be very welcome. DES 11:21, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
    • Just to provide some context here, Wikitout began making some pretty peculiar edits at the article in November. The first included unexplained personal analysis, original research, unexplained removal of cited content and some pretty silly statements like "dragged by submarine". It got worse from there so I took it to ANI. As a result, because he refused to discuss his edits and continued to edit disruptively he was indef blocked. Coincidentally, two days later the article in the Herald appeared, although I've only learned of it today. The link between the editor and the individual mentioned in the article is obvious. Since then he has, as Chaheel Riens has identified, engaged in multiple acts of sockpuppetry and his edits continue to be be disruptive. The Herald article is based on the claims of a disgruntled, indef blocked sockpuppeteer and the owner of a self-admitted fansite, which is why its inclusion in the article was reverted. Misplaced Pages editors (especially blocked ones) are not reliable sources, nor are fansites and we don't let them sneak into articles the back way just because somebody else decides to trust them. --AussieLegend () 12:33, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
    • When a reliable newspaper bases a published article on interviews with people, that article does not become less reliable because we might not accept their direct statements as reliable sources. The newspaper exercises editorial control, which means we have better reasons for trusting the statements it chooses to include than we otherwise would. And when I examined the statements supporting the claim currently in our article but being challenged by the newspaper article, it seems to me that none of the sources that support it is in fact reliable. This is now being discussed at Talk:Stockton Beach, where I have posted specific analysis of the currently cited refs. DES 13:11, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

To upload, click on Misplaced Pages:File Upload Wizard. To put it in the infobox, you would need to tell us which one, as they vary. CTF83! 11:14, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
Hi Toniandguypk. You will not be able to upload an image at Misplaced Pages until your account becomes autoconfirmed; that is, until you've made at least ten edits (you've made six thus far) and you account is at least four days old (which it will be on January 19, 2014 at 06:29 (UTC))

However, please note that if the image bears a free copyright license – one that is compatible (if you took the photograph yourself you can in many cases choose the license) or the image is in the public domain, then it should not be uploaded to Misplaced Pages, but to the Wikimedia Commons so that all projects have access to the image and extra work is not created for us to transfer it there. And the Commons does not have the autoconfirmation threshold for uploads that Misplaced Pages does. Once an image is uploaded to the Commons it can be used on any other language Misplaced Pages natively.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:45, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
