Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse is an online computer-animated web series produced by Arc Productions and distributed by Mattel. The series debuted in May 11, 2012 and is available on Barbie.com and YouTube. The series is currently on its fifth season. The show aired on Boomerang in 2013 on TV and is also available in Netflix. Two TV specials aired in Nickelodeon on September 1, 2013.

Setting

The series is set in a fictional version of Malibu, California where all of its inhabitants are dolls. The dolls though, act as people living normal lives and are aware of their own natures. The series centers on the life of Barbie, her friends, siblings and her boyfriend Ken. The series is stylized as mock reality show featuring confessionals of the characters in-between scenes.

Characters

  • Barbie (season 1 - present) – Barbie is the lead character of the show. She lives in a large pink mansion called "the Dreamhouse" along with her sisters Skipper, Stacie, Chelsea and their pets. Barbie is a fashion icon and has had over 136 careers. Despite being a celebrity in Malibu, she maintains being friendly, humble and good-natured. Barbie, literally, has everything and her most prized possession is a never-ending closet which houses all of the clothes she has acquired for the past 54 years. Barbie is voiced by Kate Higgins.
  • Ken (season 1 - present) – Ken is Barbie's long-time boyfriend. Ken strives to be the perfect boyfriend for Barbie and is always there when Barbie needs him. He is an inventor who makes high-end machines and gadgets for Barbie to use (though they usually end up malfunctioning). Ken is voiced by Sean Hankinson.
  • Barbie's sisters (season 1 - present) – Skipper, Stacie and Chelsea are Barbie's siblings who live with her in the Dreamhouse. Skipper is a teenager who enjoys tech and gadgets. Stacie is a tween who enjoys sports and skateboarding. Chelsea is a 6-year-old child prodigy who loves to play with her pets and siblings. Skipper and Stacie are voiced by Paula Rhodes while Chelsea is voiced by Laura Gerow.
  • Teresa (season 1 - present) – Teresa is one of Barbie's BFFs who lives near the Dreamhouse. She is Hispanic and her personal style is bohemian. She is a naturally good cook and loves gossip magazines. She is very chatty but is also very ditzy and often makes silly, half-witted remarks. Teresa is voiced by Katie Crown.
  • Nikki (season 1 - present) – Nikki is one of Barbie's BFFs. She is African-American and is also close friends with Teresa. She manages a fashion blog and loves taking pictures as a hobby. She is sassy, outspoken and very protective of her friends. Nikki is voiced by Nakia Burrise.
  • Raquelle (season 1 - present) – Raquelle is Barbie's frenemy and rival for Ken's affections (though Ken is quite oblivious to her advances). She lives a very posh lifestyle in an attempt to outshine Barbie. She is very vain and arrogant and is not above deceit to attain what she wants. She is also though, very clumsy and her plans to sabotage Barbie often backfire. Raquelle is voiced by Haviland Stillwell.
  • Ryan (season 1 - present) – Ryan is Raquelle's twin brother. He is a struggling musician and is very talented with the guitar. He is enamored with Barbie and often writes songs about her to impress her. He is enemies with Ken and will often brawl with him to win Barbie's affections. Like his sister, he is also very vain and is often seen carrying around large cardboard standups of himself. Ryan is voiced by Charlie Bodin.
  • Midge (season 3 - present) – Midge is Barbie's original best friend and childhood friend from Barbie's hometown, Willows, Wisconsin. She and Barbie were friends in the '60s but drifted apart when Barbie moved to Malibu. Prior to her makeover, she is in black-and-white, dressed in vintage fashion, and speaks in 1960s slang. She is also quirky, smart and is fond of arts and crafts (particularly macramé). She moves to Malibu as of Season 3 and develops an unrequited crush on Ryan. Midge is voiced by Ashlyn Selich.
  • Summer (season 4 - present) – Summer is another one of Barbie's BFFs. She is a fun, energetic girl who loves sports and games. She also gets a bit too competitive and her hyperactive nature is sometimes too much to handle for some. She officially moves to Malibu in Season 4. Summer is voiced by Tara Sands.

Merchandise

In fall 2013, a line of dolls will be released featuring the main characters (Barbie, Ken, Teresa, Nikki, Raquelle, Midge and Summer) in fashions from the series.

Publisher Little Orbit announced in May 2013 that it will release a video game based on the web series, developed by Torus Games, called Barbie Dreamhouse Party, and would be available for the Wii U, Wii, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, and Microsoft Windows as of November 2013.
