:Yes, tidying up the url would be better, and not just to remove your search string. Many websites have a bunch of query parameters you don't need to view the content. Experimentation shows you can simply shorten http://books.google.ca/books?id=wYh6kIdwZ5kC&pg=PA397&lpg=PA397&dq=White+House+staff+live+where&source=bl&ots=gLztcz7atz&sig=qIKHPmCvx5zbHn1GXxJyFtsGTS8&hl=en&sa=X&ei=9nUlU7ORHc3moASl8IKwBA&ved=0CF0Q6AEwBjgK#v=onepage&q=White%20House%20staff%20live%20where&f=false to http://books.google.ca/books?id=wYh6kIdwZ5kC&pg=PA397. The latter omits the language parameter <code>&hl=en</code> so I see the interface in Danish but that's OK. The book excerpt is still in English and I could get the interface in English by changing the language preference in my browser. ] (]) 11:15, 16 March 2014 (UTC) :Yes, tidying up the url would be better, and not just to remove your search string. Disruptive Edits to Article: Mansoor Ijaz

    Mansoor Ijaz (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

    Dear Misplaced Pages Help Desk,

I am forced to write to you once again about disruptive edits made to my Misplaced Pages page on the date of the first Grand Prix race of the 2014 season in Melbourne.

The disruptive edit was made at 01:15 UTC by IP Address 90.195.168.185 registered to BSkyB in the United Kingdom, as set forth below this message.

I have used my own account to revert the edit with a disruptive edit remark. But I think we all know that this will happen again and again while our deal with Lotus F1 Team Limited continues to be negotiated. My Article has been periodically subjected to repeated instances of libelous or slanderous remarks against my person, and late last year, after numerous cases of disruptive edits, John Reaves semi-locked my page to prevent further vandalism.

I am therefore asking once again for my page to be semi-locked so that such disruptive edits and vandalism, which could interfere with the compliance and commercial aspects of the banking arrangements we are presently in the midst of concluding, are not allowed to continue.

I apologize that I must burden you again, but it seems that there are watchers of my page who see no end to the efforts to malign my person.

Kindly accept my request to re-lock my page from disruptive edits that could have a materially negative impact on our commercial transactions. Thank you.

Best Regards, Mansoor Ijaz (talk) 03:03, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

    Dear Misplaced Pages Help Desk,
A second attempt to disruptively edit my article has been made by User:TheRedPenOfDoom. Rationale given is obscure at best. The Formula One section of my article has been a part of the page for nearly a year and no such comment on relevance has ever been made during that time. The subject matter's current status is not a matter for public debate due to strict confidentiality provisions in place between Quantum and Lotus F1 Team Limited.
Mansoor Ijaz (talk) 03:28, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
(edit conflict) I looked at the content that the IP removed and I agree with the removal. It is not about the subject of the article. You cannot use wikipedia articles to base your business dealings and stature on. we have no obligation to cover them. the fact that inappropriate content has not been addressed for a long time does not privilege it to stay in the article after it has been recognized.-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 03:32, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
I have to agree with The Red Pen of Doom here - long-winded and convoluted discussions about a complex and as yet inconclusive business deal concerning F1 don't belong in the article. If and when the deal is concluded, and to the extent that it directly concerns the subject of the article, it may merit inclusion - but that is up to Misplaced Pages contributors in general to determine, with due regard to Misplaced Pages policy. The subject of an article has no right to demand that particular topics are included or excluded - it isn't your article, it is ours. I suggest that you familiarise yourself with the Misplaced Pages:Conflict of interest policy, and rather than editing the article yourself - which we strongly discourage except in very specific circumstances - you instead propose any changes on the article talk page. AndyTheGrump (talk) 03:44, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Thank you both for your comments. I take on the point made by AndyTheGrump about a long-winded discussion about a yet-to-be concluded deal. I didn't insert the section on Formula One, and as readers and users of the Misplaced Pages pages added and subtracted to and from it, I did my best to help insure the section remained in a neutral and factually accurate point of view.

I have never asked for my article to be anything but fairly treated. Where I saw relevance to provide materials that would make the article a more complete biographical sketch, I did so under my own name as advised by senior Misplaced Pages editors in private mail correspondence from them. At least four senior editors have advised me how to manage and handle matters related to my article. I have done my utmost to remain within those guidelines.

I am happy to have a proper discussion with both of you that does not enter into the edit war it did tonight, as I am the affected living person. I am equally happy if you wish to opt for just removing my page if you think my life's work is not of relevance. What we should not do is use your authority as editors to just simply chop up an article just because you feel like it. That is not the spirit with which free editing was intended either.

Thank you both for your comments, which help me to understand what was behind the change. I think there is a better way to do it if you are open to that discussion. Mansoor Ijaz (talk) 04:13, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Please remember that Misplaced Pages, being an encyclopedia, is supposed to contain an overview of its subjects. Having a large section on a chronologically small topic (in other words, something that only occupies a small portion of your total time alive so far) really places undue weight on the subject. We can assume that other parts of your life are significant in the long run: your place as a media commentator has gotten plenty of coverage over long periods of time, your place as an international negotiator has gotten more, and your personal life is intrinsically important to the article. However, we can't assume that a few months of business dealings will be highly relevant to your life: we need to wait until the historians look at your life as a whole and deem them significant, or we need to wait until these business dealings keep going and become a part of your life for several years. Without one or the other, we're placing a lot of emphasis on one element that's not necessarily occupied a major portion of your life. Nyttend (talk) 04:43, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

    Google book ext. link

I searched for "White House staff live where" and got a hit on a book, which I used to partially answer a reference desk question (and add reference #3 to Executive Residence#Third floor). However, I'm wondering if I should tidy up the link so it doesn't have my search string embedded in it. If so, how? Clarityfiend (talk) 10:21, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Yes, tidying up the url would be better, and not just to remove your search string. Many websites have a bunch of query parameters you don't need to view the content. Experimentation shows you can simply shorten this long link to this shorter one. The latter omits the language parameter &hl=en so I see the interface in Danish but that's OK. The book excerpt is still in English and I could get the interface in English by changing the language preference in my browser. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:15, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

    who can access my sandbox

I'm just about to start my first attempt at writing a Misplaced Pages page in my sandbox and was under the impression that only I had access to its contents - is this not the case? The reason I ask is that I'm also working on a project in another language and when I ran a Web search with "sandbox" and the name of the page's subject, the first result enabled me to access my sandbox without logging in - is this normal, or have i done something wrong? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.91.127.113 (talk) 12:42, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Anyone can view any page on Misplaced Pages including your sandbox excluding some Special pages which is not relevant in this context. --Glaisher 12:45, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
Also (with a few exceptions) sandboxes can be edited by any user. Peter James (talk) 14:27, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

So what advantages do I have from logging in? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.91.127.113 (talk) 13:03, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

    See WP:BENEFITS --Glaisher 13:05, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
You can place {{User sandbox}} on the page to mark it as a sandbox and prevent indexing in external search engines (at least when they respect noindex). Other Misplaced Pages languages may have other templates but __NOINDEX__ will prevent search engine indexing in all Wikimedia wikis. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:50, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

    Kosmon Sanctuary, Walton-on-the-Hill

Dear Provider of Information on this site

To inform you that the photo taken that is supposed to be of the Kosmon Sanctuary is actually nothing to do with the Kosmon Sanctuary. The building in the photo is actually a private residence that has no link to the Kosmon Sanctuary. The Kosmon Sanctuary is actually a flat-roofed hall attached to a cottage that is located further along the road from Walton Manor itself. Walton Manor is not a sanctuary but is converted into flats, with a single house remaining within the building. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.133.21.242 (talk) 15:27, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

There's no "Provider of Information" - anyone can edit even without an account here - see Template:Sofixit. I've made the changes to List of places of worship in Reigate and Banstead and Walton-on-the-Hill and requested a rename of the image on Commons. Peter James (talk) 15:57, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages is not a reliable source and so I would hope from an educational point of view you are strictly instructing your students "Don't believe everything (or even most) of what you see on the interwebs! Do your diligence and assess the sources!"
But the content itself is free to use. see Misplaced Pages:Reusing Misplaced Pages content.-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 19:50, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
BUT: if you are asking whether you can set up pages somewhere in Misplaced Pages where you could post information for your students to use: then, definitely not. Misplaced Pages is not a webhost; we do not offer space on our servers for you to use that way. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:32, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
Maybe, when Johnclaren1952 wrote "Can I use Wiki", he meant "a wiki site", rather than "Misplaced Pages". The answer would then be "yes, if you choose a wiki site which allows such use, or if you set up your own wiki site". Maproom (talk) 19:51, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages Page for Luke Cooper

I was pleasantly shocked to see an article about me pop up on Misplaced Pages recently. It felt great that the market objectively viewed my commitment to entrepreneurship and community service so positively.

Aside from being a tech entrepreneur, a lot of my focus in the public sphere is around issues affecting young Black boys. They are inundated with negative images of "ghetto success" and need a new generation of role models, drawn from the legal profession, business and education, to counter under-performance and involvement in crime. I am working daily to achieve this. Especially so here in Baltimore, where more than 20% of the city's residents live below the poverty line.

At the risk of offending, I am asking the powers that be to please permit the page to remain. Although its does not capture all of my other national/regional media it is indeed accurate. And more importantly it serves as a great guide to others that are combatting abject poverty and desperation on a daily basis to see what success looks like. As for notability, I may not be as notable as the most notable figures in the community but my notability is comparable to many of the individuals there. Misplaced Pages is an amazing community because of group curation but also because of its noble non-profit cause. My purpose through entrepreneurship and the small fame I have achieved is to do the same charitable campaigning to rescue those suffering daily because of poverty and lack of opportunity.

    Thank you.

Luke Cooper — Preceding unsigned comment added by Faktfinder (talkcontribs) 16:58, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Hello Luke. There are no "powers that be": Misplaced Pages is governed by consensus. The discussion about deleting the page about you is at Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Luke Cooper. The sole criterion for whether the page will be kept is if there are reliable published sources, independent of you which talk about you (more than just a mention in passing): the worthiness of you or your activities does not enter into the question, and nor (emphatically) does any question of bringing your work to a wider audience. Misplaced Pages is only interested in topics which have already written about. If you know of any articles about you which have been published in a reliable place (such as a major newspaper or a book from a reputable publisher), and are independent of you (so they are not just written from a press release, or written by somebody close to you) you are welcome to contribute to the deletion discussion with these references; but postings to the discussion which do not address the central issue of notability (in Misplaced Pages's special sense) will not have any effect on the discussion. (If you do post to that discussion, be sure to declare explicitly that you are the subject: this will ensure that your contribution is treated on its merits, where being silent about your conflict of interest may prejudice editors against you). --ColinFine (talk) 01:08, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

Copy of Misplaced Pages Articles and information

Can I make copies of Misplaced Pages pages and give them to students to enhance their learing experiences? Thanks

HL — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.22.189.18 (talk) 17:34, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages articles are not reliable sources, and so handing them out to students without careful explanation of not blindly accepting sources would be problematic from an educational point of view.
but, all of the text content is licensed for free use and distribution with proper attribution and so from a copyright stand, yes you may distribute. Some of the images may be under copyright and so distribution of the copyright images would need a little extra work. see Misplaced Pages:Reusing Misplaced Pages content.-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 19:35, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

    Template creation in sandbox

How can I create a template within my own sandbox? I created {{US Open championships}} in the template namespace but only because it wasn't clear to me how to create this in my sandbox.--Wolbo (talk) 19:15, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

You can use the same template code in your sandbox. It can be transcluded for demonstration purposes by including the namespace as in {{User:Wolbo/sandbox}}. Userspace pages should not be transcluded in mainspace articles. {{User:Wolbo/sandbox}} will always transclude the current version of the page so if you expect to use the sandbox for other purposes later, it's a bad idea to transclude it in a discussion. A page at User:Wolbo/US Open championships would be better in that case. A few things like templates with namespace checks may behave differently in userspace, but in your example there should be no issues. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:39, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
Thx. I have created a sandbox for templates but if it transcludes the entire page does it mean I can only put (the code of) one template on the page? I would like to create several (versions of) templates but in that case is it possible to select one specific template to transclude?--Wolbo (talk) 23:13, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
There are ways to transclude different selected parts of a page but it's tricky and I haven't seen it done for this purpose. I suggest you either create separate pages or omit transcluding the page and instead link to it if you want others to see it. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:00, 17 March 2014 (UTC)
OK, sounds like separate pages is the way to go. Thx.--Wolbo (talk) 08:17, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

Two columns, with a table in each

There is a long, narrow table HERE. It will never get any longer than it is. I'd like to break it up into two side-by-side columns, separated by some space. The first column would have the table heading and would end after "Second VP-40". The second would also have the table heading and would include the rest of the items. Providing that this is possible, can somebody please do it, or show me how it is done? (I have a few more tables that need this treatment. Once I see how it's done, I can figure out how to handle them). Lou Sander (talk) 20:16, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi! I went ahead and took care of it in this edit. Basically, all I did was divide your giant table into two smaller ones, then place them into a new table with two columns. Here's the skeleton of the code I used:
    {|
    |-
    | valign="top" |
    <Insert table 1>
    | valign="top" |
    <Insert table 2>
    |}

Hope this helps, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 21:27, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
It did! I repeated your fix in two other tables, and now I've got just what I want. There's one little loose end that I'll work on later. Lou Sander (talk) 00:50, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

    Posting questions about an article

How do you post questions about an article, i don't understand?

thanks, Jassy forever — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jassy forever (talkcontribs) 00:46, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

That depends on the point of the question. This page, the Help Desk, is for asking questions about how to edit Misplaced Pages. So it would be good for asking questions about adding images, adding references, etc to an article. You can ask a question here by clicking on the link at the top of the page that says "Click here to ask a new question about how to use or edit Misplaced Pages".
If your question is about a specific article and doesn't really relate to the "how" of editing the article, then the Talk Page of the specific article you have in mind would probably be best. Things like "Should we mention Person X's involvement in such-and-such event?" are often asked on talk pages.
    Does that help? Dismas| 01:56, 17 March 2014 (UTC)
a third place to ask would be the reference desk if you have a question about a subject that the article doesnt cover or want to know how article A relates to article B.
and a fourth option, if your question is "I dont understand this article" would be to look at the left hand sidebar and see if "Simple English" is listed in the "languages". Articles in Simple English Misplaced Pages version are designed for easier comprehension so clicking on the link you may find that the simpler words and simpler sentence structure and a gloss over the complexities may allow you to have a "Oh, now I get it" moment. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 02:14, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

You might have better luck over at the Computing reference desk (click here → Misplaced Pages: Reference desk/Computing). It would be helpful to mention your operating system and browser. Note that clearing your history only deletes shortcuts and doesn't do much regarding an "overloaded" computer. Purging browser cache helps somewhat. Changing images

Could I change a image from a Misplaced Pages profile, if so How and where could I do it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Torrian2013 (talkcontribs) 12:41, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

Probably yes, Torrian2013, but it very much depends on what you mean by "Change an image". If you want to replace an image in an article by another image which has already been uploaded to Misplaced Pages or Wikimedia Commons, then you simply replace the filename in the link by the other filename (getting it precise, including punctuation and case of letters). If you want to replace it by a different image which you have, then you first need to upload the image to Misplaced Pages or Wikimedia commons; but you may only do this if its copyright status is suitable (most images you find on the internet do not have suitable licensing and you may not upload them). Please see Help:Introduction to uploading images. If you want to take an image in an article and make changes to it you will probably need to download the image and use some tool to edit it outside Misplaced Pages, then upload a new version. The Image lab may be able to help. By the way, I recommend thinking of pages in Misplaced Pages as articles, not profiles: this is not a directory, and the content of an article ideally comes entirely from published sources unconnected with the subject of the article. --ColinFine (talk) 21:38, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

How to stop repeated vandalism of Jonathan Self page

I'm writing on behalf of Jonathan Self regarding the repeated alterations and inaccuracies made to his page. The inaccuracies are related to his current relationship status and his current residence.

The ACCURATE facts are: - Jonathan Self lives in Malta - Jonathan Self is no longer married to Marriane Van Pelt. They are divorced. They do not share a family estate in Cork - as previously mentioned Self lives in Malta. - His ex-wife Van Pelt is not an equestrian writer. Any references to current or past relationships are not relevant.

Self can provide evidence of both his residence in Malta and his divorce from Van Pelt.

Finally the photo of Self is being continually removed.

All these inaccurate amends are made by the same user - Jvpwiki.

What Self would like to appear (as it is all true) is the following:

Jonathan Self (born 1959) is a British author and journalist. He is a former trustee of the World Land Trust, an environmental charity, and one of the founders of Honey's Real Dog Food, an artisan dog food business. His brother is the novelist and broadcaster Will Self. His father was the academic Peter Self.

He began his career as an advertising copywriter and in 1982 founded Self Direct, a direct-marketing agency. He sold his business in 1993 in order to have time to raise his three children. After publishing his autobiography, Self Abuse, in 2001 he ghostwrote a number of celebrity memoirs. Self has written extensively for the British media including Country Life, The Times, The Daily Telegraph and The Mail on Sunday. In 2009 he collaborated with Arabella Lennox-Boyd on Welcome to Dream Acres, a Country Life series about landscape gardening.

Please let me know what can be done to stop this vandalism.

Many thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1745A (talkcontribs) 13:24, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

Please read the Misplaced Pages definition of vandalism. On that article, the closest to vandalism is your repeated removal of information which is supported by published reliable sources. What Self would like to appear is of no relevance to Misplaced Pages. What is relevant is what has been published by reliable sources independent of the subject. The place to discuss changes is Talk:Jonathan Self, but please remember to declare your conflict of interest when you make suggestions there. --David Biddulph (talk) 13:48, 17 March 2014 (UTC)
Please be aware that vandalism is the intentional interference with the quality of the encyclopedia. The allegation of vandalism, when inappropriate, is a very strong personal attack, and should never be made in what appears to be a content dispute. Too many editors who have content disputes think that using "vandalism" in a section title is an easy way to get attention to their side of the content dispute. It does get attention, but it is likely to be a boomerang. Do not use the term "vandalism" to try to get attention to a content dispute. If you know Misplaced Pages well enough to know what the definition of vandalism is, you should know it well enough to know not to make that allegation idly. Schwan Food Company

Schwan Food Company has had multiple lawsuits filed against it (in varying states and jurisdictions) alleging employment discrimination. Allegations include racial discrimination, Americans with Disability (civil rights violations) discrimination, among others. In December, 2013, Sandeep Gupta, a former manager that worked at Schwan's Home Service offices in Austin, TX and Houston, TX filed a lawsuit alleging racial discrimination by Schwan employees. This discrimination included verbal and physical abuse and alleges Schwan's Home Service did not take adequate steps to prevent or stop such abuse from occuring. In his claim, Gupta states that he was held down and punched in the groin by fellow co-workers on multiple occasions, locked in a freezer, and frequently referred to as a "terrorist" by co-workers (despite Gupta being a Hindu), including a district manager. Based upon these conditions and the discriminatory work environment created by his co-workers and the district manager, he did not feel he would be able to get support from Schwan Home Services on these abuses.

    Schwan Food Company

    Good morning all -

The above edit, placed on the Schwan Food Company page is part of a media campaign by a plaintiff in a case against my client, Schwan's Home Service, Inc., a subsidiary of the Schwan Food Company, in an attempt to leverage a settlement, as the facts in his post are alleged and exaggerated and have not been proven true, citing to a press release issued by plaintiff and not an unbiased news story. As it is a one-sided commentary on ongoing litigation, and Misplaced Pages is being used to leverage the outcome of that lawsuit through trial in the public eye, I am going to remove it and request that the IP address of the original editor be blocked and editing privileges be restricted until after a decision has been rendered by the applicable court.

I want to use the second account for commenting on articles relating to contentious topics without having to worry about someone going after me outside of Misplaced Pages. This account uses my real name, which had to made public for good reason. How do I make it so that a responsible person like a Misplaced Pages admin could see that the other account is mine without having to worry about random IP user also spotting the account is mine? Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | 15 Adar II 5774 15:45, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

You can email one or two Misplaced Pages admins that you trust, if you wish, but you are not actually obligated to reveal the connection between your accounts as long as you abide carefully by the policy on multiple accounts. Assuming that you intend to use the two accounts to edit in different areas, you should not need to worry about needing to tell anyone. Yunshui  15:49, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

    Saint Patrick's Day

    Hello,

There is a mistake on your "Saint Patrick's Day" page. It is listed as St Patty's Day under "Also called", which is incorrect. The Dublin Airport Facebook page posted the notice clarifying that it's "Saint Paddy's Day," not "Saint Patty's Day." (DublinAirport/Facebook)

Thank you, — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.252.254.114 (talk) 16:43, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

WP:SOFIXIT. You may edit it, citing a reliable source. I agree that references to "St. Patty's Day" are just plain wrong, because that changes the gender of the saint. If there is a St. Patricia (and there likely is, in the Irish monastic movement of the early middle age), then she is St. Patty, but he is either St. Patrick (Sanctus Patricius) or St. Paddy. Robert McClenon (talk) 16:56, 17 March 2014 (UTC)
As the article is currently semi-protected, the IP editor raising the point cannot fix-it, whilst the use of St Patty relates to a CBS news report - are you saying CBS is not a reliable source? - Arjayay (talk) 18:54, 17 March 2014 (UTC)
Regardless of the gender logic, it's correct that it's also called "St Patty's Day". A simple Google shows so many examples that it seems suitable to mention, and it's sourced in the article. If it wasn't also called St Patty's Day then there wouldn't be a website asking people to not call it that. Saint Patrick's Day lists both Patty's and Paddy's under "Also called" so I don't see a problem, unless we want to hide what people actually call something just because we don't like the name. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:23, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
Before calling something "just plain wrong" please read the extensive discussions on the talk page and its archives focusing on this. --NeilN 12:29, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

    Infobox insert question

Right now I am in the process of making a new page. I am trying to insert an infobox with a picture and basic information about my subject, but I can't find out how to do it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Benheer2 (talkcontribs) 19:56, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

Infoboxes are defined as templates. Looking at your sandbox, I'm guessing that you want {{Infobox comic}}, and if you look at the page I have just linked to it shows you what to insert into the article: you just put suitable values after the = signs (you don't have to fill in all of them). Unfortunately that particular template doesn't have documentation explaining the various parameters, so I suggest you find another similar article which already has the infobox, and edit that article not to make any changes but just to see how the infobox is used. --ColinFine (talk) 21:45, 17 March 2014 (UTC)
{{Infobox comic}} is for a single comic story. I think you want {{Infobox comic strip}} which does have documentation. You may also be interested in Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Comics and Misplaced Pages:Manual of Style/Comics. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:10, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

How should I ask for the copyright status of an image to be investigated?

Dear editors: While reviewing this article: Misplaced Pages talk:Articles for creation/Tokwa Salazar Peñaflorida I was surprised at the number of images of artwork. Most professional artists don't give away their work. Are there Wikipedians who specialize in checking the copyright status of images, and if so, what is the process of asking for a check? —Anne Delong (talk) 23:44, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

Hey Anne. If those images were local I'd advise you to head over to Misplaced Pages:Possibly unfree files (or if you were more sure, Misplaced Pages:Files for deletion), but these images are hosted at the Commons. I haven't located a dedicated intermediate forum like we have, before jumping to a deletion request, but I have seen users asking these type of questions at Commons:Village pump/Copyright, so you might try there (they also have a help desk). See here for Commons deletion requests. However, before doing any of that, I'd leave a message at Commons:User talk:Spearminttt and User talk:Spearminttt asking him about these uploads – whether he is the artist or thought he had right to release the photograph he took of the paintings (which is not at all an uncommon misunderstanding). And maybe it will turn out he is the artist after all.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:49, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

    User page accidentally in mainspace

I have made a 'user page' and wonder how it becomes a regular article within the Encyclopedia.

Can you answer this question. I am listed under people from the article entitled Woodville, Ohio.

    108.89.246.64 (talk) 00:31, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

You are no longer listed under the People from Woodville, Ohio due to this edit. In general, people should have an article first before being added to these lists. Since there was no article, the link was removed. I do see that there is a user page at User:Ray W. Clarke. This is not the same as having an article in the main space. While you may meet our notability requirements, see WP:BIO, it is generally suggested that people not write about themselves. See WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY. Dismas| 05:00, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
If you must write an article about yourself, I suggest using the Misplaced Pages:Articles for creation process where you will get experienced editors looking over your text and offering advice. The content on the user page would not be an acceptable article. --NeilN 12:26, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
Since this was intended to be an article, your userpage could be potentially be deleted as per WP:FAKEARTICLE. Generally speaking, if you are notable, somebody else will create your article. Jason Quinn (talk) 03:01, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

You seem to be the only one experiencing this judging from the fact that you're the only one asking about it. Therefore it is likely something to do with your computer and not Misplaced Pages itself. Dismas| 05:04, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi @Darkmale25: If you don't mind other editors seeing your work, you can create your article on a subpage of yours (such as at User:Darkmale25/Sandbox), and then make a request over at Misplaced Pages:Requests for page protection to prevent other editors from editing it. People will still be able to see your work, but won't to be able to make any changes to it.
If you don't want anyone to be able to even view your work, unfortunately that's not possible. If you don't want others to see your work, I recommend writing up your article locally (in a Notepad file or something of that sort), and then using the preview function anytime you wish to see how your article will appear live. Hope this helps! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 04:48, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
That said, most editors will not go looking for sandbox articles. And even if they happen upon it, they generally don't edit in someone else's sandbox without that person's permission. If you want, you can go the requesting protection route but, in my opinion, that's overkill. A notice at the top of the page politely asking other editors not to edit the sandbox article should be enough. Dismas| 04:55, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
This is all assuming that you are creating an article which will eventually be moved to mainspace and edited by others. Even in user space, the content should be (1) material used in article development or (2) material related to Misplaced Pages activities. You should see some of the stuff that people add to Misplaced Pages that they don't want others to edit - score sheets for fantasy football games, love notes to their girlfriends, resumées, short stories, recipes, tirades about their bosses, copies of company web sites, etc., etc.! —Anne Delong (talk) 05:12, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
Are they supposed to do that? Is it frowned upon but look the other way stuff, or against policy and report if found stuff when editors use space for fantasy leagues and resumes? I found one who makes fantasy league stuff right on their User: page... not on talk or sandboxes. Fyunck(click) (talk) 06:10, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
That kind of stuff should go to WP:MFD. Also, I thought page protection couldn't be limited to an individual user... *searches* - Purplewowies (talk) 06:21, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

    Erika Eichhorn Bourguignon

I need help with the article "Erika Eichhorn Bourguignon." Someone attached a tag at the top of the article saying it was an orphan since no other articles link to it. I did, therefore, link it to two other articles, "altered states of consciousness" and "Felicitas Goodman." I believe that the note about lack of linkages should therefore be removed.

Also, someone tagged the article for not being reviewed. If someone could review it, that would be great. Actually, it was reviewed and approved by an appropriate Misplaced Pages person several weeks ago -- before I removed it so that Erika Bourguignon could look it over before I uploaded it again.

Hello, Athana. If you believe that one of the maintenance tags at the top of a page is no longer appropriate, you may remove it. Be sure to leave an edit summary explaining why you think this is the right thing to do. As you say, it is no longer an orphan, but the reliance on primary sources remains an issue: it needs references to sources unconnected with Bourguignon. It can be done with {{efn|name=...}} as in . It may be a little confusing that note a and note b each have backlinks to occurrences linked on "a" and "b". You could consider another {{efn}} group name than the default lower-alpha. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:57, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

Referencing video games as sources to themselves

I think video games should be allowed as a source onto themselves; rather than having to use their instruction manuals simply because they have page numbers. The freedom of video games is difficult for citation as even units of time that could be used for citing a film are meaningless when progression is based on the players actions. Most video games take longer to play than even multiple comic book story arcs; so pinpointing when or where something occurs in the game is incredibly difficult for a referencing system designed mostly for written material. If this is something for the village pump please let me know. CensoredScribe (talk) 16:53, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

Referencing errors on M113 armored personnel carrier

Reference help requested. I caused this error as I was trying to enter information. I am unsure how to correct it or add the info I was attempting to insert. This is my first attempt at adding info to Misplaced Pages and I failed miserably. I still want to add additional info. Any suggestions on how to proceed. Thanks, WWW3ii (talk) 17:51, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

every "open" needs to be "closed" and there was a missing "close". I just guessed where to place it, so that it includes as the "note" the list of 10 things. If that was not what you intended, feel free to move the close. see Help:Referencing for beginners

    Unwanted user page subpages

I've created several subpages to my user page. They have served as sandboxes, but they aren't named as sandboxes. They have now served their purpose. Can I get rid of them, and if so, how? Lou Sander (talk) 18:33, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

    You'll want to look at CSD U1. Samwalton9 (talk) 18:35, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

    Adding a Photo

I am working on the page for Kon Trubkovich (https://en.wikipedia.org/Kon_Trubkovich) . I have received permission from the artist and representing gallery to publish a photo of his work. It was recently removed because it lacked the proper copyright licensing information. Please tell me what that is and how I go about obtaining that info. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Intern.mbg (talkcontribs) 19:44, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

See donating copyrighted materials. Keep in mind that the artist must be willing to release the work under a free license for this purpose. Otherwise, it may still be included on Misplaced Pages, but it will have to follow certain policies. Anon126 (talk - contribs) 21:05, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

    Remove redirect

How do I remove the redirect of my sandbox to the article Chaz Guest? — Preceding unsigned comment added by AEN2013 (talkcontribs) 20:26, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

From your sandbox, hit the edit button, and blank it or change it as you wish. --David Biddulph (talk) 20:34, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
For another time, see Help:Redirect#Creating and editing redirects for how to get to a redirect. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:58, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

    status of a submission

I submitted an entry a while ago for the dancer and choreographer Eryc Taylor. Is there a way to find out the status of that entry? Will I be notified?Edmo49 (talk) 21:21, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

You can go to the bottom of Misplaced Pages talk:Articles for creation/Eryc Taylor and find a notice that reads "Review waiting". Once it is reviewed, you should receive a notice on your talk page. Anon126 (talk - contribs) 21:28, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

Somaliland University of Technology Misplaced Pages webepage

    Dear Misplaced Pages Support,

This page belongs to the Somaliland University of Technology. I am the President Founder of this University. The University has exclusive rights to past right information on this page.

The username:(Slibaan) is a fake one who torpedoes our page and edits it regularly. It pastes fake information here.

I ask the Misplaced Pages support to restore our Username: somtech and stop this vandal action by Slibaan.

I look forward to hearing from you soon

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Dr. Saeed Sheikh Mohamed — Preceding unsigned comment added by Slibaan (talkcontribs) 00:39, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

Hello, Dr Mohamed. I am a little confused by the above, because you appear to have posted that request from the account Slibaan. However, I can tell you that in one respect your are mistaken: you do not have exclusive rights to the article Somaliland University of Technology. Nobody owns any page in Misplaced Pages or has exclusive access to it. Furthermore, if you are the President of the university, you have a conflict of interest and you are strongly discouraged from posting on the page yourself. You are welcome to make suggestions for the improvement of the article on its talk page Talk:Somaliland University of Technology.
As for the edits to the article, it looks to me as if Slibaan and Middayexpress are carrying on an edit war. You (collectively) have what we call a content dispute (which if I understand correctly, is about the national status of Somaliland, though I may be misreading). All of you should stop simply reverting each other and discuss the matter on the article's talk page. If you cannot reach consensus, you should make use of the dispute resolution process. Note that disagreeing with you is not the same as vandalism.
I'm not sure what you mean about the username somtech: Are you referring to User:Somtech26, which made three edits to Somaliland in 2012? --ColinFine (talk) 01:12, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

Blurred Screens on Laptop and Tablet Computers in Misplaced Pages Articles

Why are some laptop, phones and tablet computers have their screens blurred in Misplaced Pages Articles? I have never seen this before on Misplaced Pages and don't understand the reasoning. Thanks Here's an example https://en.wikipedia.org/File:ThinkPadX230.jpg Polloloco51 (talk) 03:04, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

Screenshots of software are usually copyrighted. See commons:Commons:Screenshots and Misplaced Pages:Software screenshots. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:07, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi, The photos of the laptops and tablets are not true screenshots, but depict the Windows OS running within the photo itself. It is really silly in my view and ruins the visuals for the readers when reading the articles. Hopefully whatever Copyright rule or policy that's causing this can change.Polloloco51 (talk) 03:26, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
