Yank Barry (born Gerald Barry Falovitch), January 29, 1948 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. As founder and CEO of VitaPro, pioneered the marketing of textured vegetable protein as a meat substitute. He is also a three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee. He has also had a long standing musical career.

Career

Early career (1964 - 1970)

Barry was born in Montreal in 1948. In 1964 he began recording music and released the track when he released the track ‘Falling in Love’ on Kol Israel Records.

In 1968, Barry joined the 1960s Beat/garage rock band, The Kingsmen. The band originated from Portland, Oregon in the United States. He was only a member of the band for two years, before leaving in 1970. During this time he spent the majority of the time touring with the group. Yank pioneered the first quadraphonic album along with Robert Lifton and Ben Lanzarone at Regent Sound Studios in New York in 1970.

Solo career & production (1971 - 1989)

Barry pioneered the first quadraphonic album along with Robert Lifton and Ben Lanzarone at Regent Sound Studios in New York in 1970. In 1971, he recorded the rock opera “The diary of Mr. Gray”, which put him on the cover of many trade magazines. He also appeared on the The Mike Douglas Show, The Merv Griffin Show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and The Sally Jessy Raphaël Show. In 1975, Yank was also commissioned by the White House to write and compose “Welcome Home P.O.W.s”. Yank produced the Broadway show “Let my People Come” (link to image) at the Imperial Theater in 1979.

After 1979 Barry spent his time producing music. In 1980, he served 11 months of a 6 year prison term for extortion. In 1984 he mixed a track for Julio Iglesias & Willie Nelson titled To All The Girls I've Loved Before. During the same year, Barry produced his first notable TV commercial, with the music for Kellogg's Raisin Bran "Racin' Man" 1984 TV Commercial. During the 1980s he also produced music for a number of TV commercials including, Kodak’s Disc Camera, Bubble Yum, Pontiac and Dr. Pepper.

From 1985 to 1989, he produced tracks for Hugh Ball, Bowzer and Blue and Manon Robert. He also released a track in 1986 called ‘This could be Classical’.

VitaPro (1992-present)

Barry founded and is CEO of VitaPro Foods Inc., a company established in 1992 which sells textured vegetable protein soy-based meat substitutes, primarily to prisons and other institutional feeding operations.

Humanitarian work (1990 – present)

In the mid 90’s Barry began to get involved in humanitarian work with his friend Muhammad Ali. Since 1997, he has received global recognition for his work. This has included recognition from countries such as Cote D'ivoire, India, Bulgaria, and Libya for his humanitarian work. He is the founder of Global Village Champions Foundation.

Yank has two features on Entertainment Tonight, CNN, W-Five, CTV National News, CBC News Switchback, Musique Plus, ZNS News, ABC News and Access Hollywood just to name a few.

Yank has also been on the covers of Zoo World, Eye magazine and a major feature in Cashbox. These magazine covers featured Yank's earlier career in the music industry.

Yank Barry has been a writer, composer, publisher, member of ASCAP since 1971, and a member of NARAS, CARAS, American Federation of Musicians.
