A similar term, the Dublin Metropolitan Region to describe the same area is used by the Irish police force, An ], to describe the legal boundaries of the Dublin division. For many years, this area covered the ] except the part of ] north of ]. This area was covered by the Meath Garda Division. The Dublin Metropolitan area also included the ] towns of ] ], and the ] towns of ], ], and ].

However, during 2008 the current Garda Divisions were realigned along county boundaries. As of 2009, the Dublin Metropolitan Region covers the entire area of ]. ] was moved to the ] Division and made district headquarters for the new Leixlip District . ] is now also in the Kildare Division and is both the headquarters of the division and also of the Naas District. ] moved into the new ] Division and became district headquarters for the Bray District .

This boundary has legal importance, as for example licences for digital television in Dublin, such as that held by ], cover the Metropolitan Area.

The term originated from the ; that act amagamated the ] and ] as one national police force. The term Dublin Metropolitan Region has gained prevalence in recent years for Dublin Metropolitan Area.

==Planning usage==
The term is also used in the Regional Planning Guidelines for the ] to refer to the area of Dublin and its environs which is to be consolidated as a suburban and metropolitan district. It differentiates between which towns are considered ], and which are considered ]s. The area is considered as being from ] and ] in ] in the north to Greystones in County Wicklow in the south, and as far west as ] in County Kildare. This differs from the Gardaí's designation in that it stretches some 20 km further west.
