The Babri Masjid(Mosque) is or babri Structure(as per law records was destroyed by Hindu nationalists. As per history there used to be a temple at the spot till the 16th century. babar a moghul invader destoyed this temple along with the temple at Varanasa and Mathura and build mosques over these places as a sign of the muslim conquests. After the partition of 1947 India became a democracy with nearly 90% hindu population.
The hindus led by the RSS and BJP have been agitating for the reconstruction of these temples. A mass movement organised by them led to a bloody end when the police opened fire at them. Another mass movement led to the police lines being overrun and the police retreated, leading to the miscreants demolishing the structure. They were laso helped by the fact that the state government was being run by the BJP which had a soft corner.
The Hindus have mixed feeling about this as they condemn the destruction due to its violent nature but they did/do see the mosque as a symbol of centuries of Moslem repression.
The Moslems see the structure as a mosque(there have been no prayers offered since the partition) and were understandably very aggrieved at the destruction.
