Talk to me, Andy Mabbett
- If you post a message on this page, I'll reply on this page to avoid fragmenting the discussion.
- If I've left you a message on your talk page, I will be watching it, so please reply there rather than here (but do feel free to drop a copy of {{Talkback}} here).
- If appropriate, I will move discussion from here to the relevant article's talk page, so that anyone interested can join in.
- If you want to start a new discussion thread, please start it at the bottom of the page. Better still, use the "+" tab next to the "edit this page" tab, or the link at the foot of this section, either of which will do that automatically.
- Please do not make links from within section headings.
- Inaccessible HTML (coloured text, "small" tags", etc.) will be removed from this page on sight.
- Please sign and date your entries by inserting four tildes (~~~~) at the end.
- Start a new discussion.

Finacle
Hi Andy, I'm currently rewriting Finacle. I need your opinion. Do you think I can take it to DYK? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 20:43, 5 July 2014 (UTC)
- You only have around 540 character of prose. It had more than that on 18 June. Per Misplaced Pages:Did you know#DYK rules, five times expansion would be needed. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:45, 5 July 2014 (UTC)
I wasn't talking about the size. I can get it beyond 1500. I took down promotional/copyvio texts. I was talking of a hook wise. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 18:50, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
- There's always something that can be sued as a hook. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:56, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
DYK nomination of Steve Ormerod
Hello! Your submission of Steve Ormerod at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! BlueMoonset (talk) 00:07, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
2nd Hum Awards
Hello, Andy Mabbett, i want you to add one more Parameter in Infobox film awards which is: best_drama_serial_popular, could you please add this parameter, as it is necessary for description in 2nd Hum Awards. You can visit this page for further description, but, it is important to mention this parameter in Template box of film Awards. And one more could you change the previous parameter best_drama_serial to best_drama_serial_jury. Please i am waiting for your action. Fushan July 08, 2014, 20:36(UTC)
- Please see Template talk:Infobox film awards#New drama parameter proposal. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:08, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
Template:Did you know nominations/John McClure (producer)
Andy, significant issues remain on this nomination going well beyond the one blacklisted source. Please stop by as soon as possible to deal with them. At this point, you owe QPQs not only on this nomination, but on the Beryl Randle and Steve Ormerod nominations as well. The Beryl Randle is two weeks overdue at this point, and I imagine the nomination will be closed within a week if you don't supply a quid pro quo review there, with Steve Ormerod not far behind. Thank you for taking action on these. BlueMoonset (talk) 14:20, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
About Selma (film)
You placed an 'outdated' tag on Selma. The film is still in production or post production, and is not scheduled for release until December 25, 2014. If you have specific information that should be added to the article, please make the edit, or raise the subject on the talk page. Otherwise those of us who have worked on the article must guess at what you mean. - Neonorange (talk) 20:34, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- I placed the tag because the article includes dated events, in the past, but refers to them in the future tense. This should not need a talk page explanation; nor guesswork. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:48, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- I assume good faith, but had you done that in the beginning, no guesswork - and no exchange of messages. It is an inappropriate tag; I'm removing it. 'Dated' means old information, not improper tense. Without your explanation of your use of the word guesswork is all that's left. - Neonorange (talk) 21:29, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- And to save guesswork on your part, an amplified explanation: dated means old and superseded information. - Neonorange (talk) 21:32, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- And I've restored it; "is scheduled for June 23–26" is "old and superseded". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:37, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- Well, I see some of your point. This now seems to be a discussion in philosophy/philology. The tense is one problem, and, I think, the main problem. On the other hand, WP:RS are easy for the projected shooting schedule; but not so easy about the projected shooting schedule having finished. I've edited on only one film article. However, I believe the fact that this article was published in Misplaced Pages six months before the film's first limited distribution is perhaps part of the problem. I think the future tense is proper as that is what the references state. It may very well be that principle photography is done, but there may not be any WP:RS more recent, and we can not draw such a conclusion. Your tag still is not really the best flag that you have found something wrong. I hesitate to get into convoluted constructions such as - it was reported in May that shooting in Selma would be done in the fourth week of June. It is not as if the World Cup schedule was reported in a Misplaced Pages article published in March, and by mid July there had been no update. - Neonorange (talk) 22:05, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- I do think your concerns are valid. I don't think the tag is helpful, especially for attracting help from someone who has not worked on the article. I'll think about a solution. One approach is to completely remove the sentence you mention. Then, when (if it does) a WP:RS 'principal shooting ended' appears, insert a new sentence. Can you think of a more precise tag? - Neonorange (talk) 22:21, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- tl;dr. The article is outdated. It requires an update. If - for whatever reasons - you cannot make the update, go and do something useful elsewhere, and leave it for someone who can. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:25, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Hello, Andy. Would you like to address the issue raised by 97198, please? Please respond on the DYK nom template. Thanks. --PFHLai (talk) 14:00, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
- @PFHLai: Thanks for the reminder; that's now done. I don't feel comfortable with these reviews, and wish there was some other way to offset some of the large volume of work I do for Misplaced Pages, in other spheres, against my nominations. Wikidata weekly summary #117
Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.- Discussions
- Other Noteworthy Stuff
- Two new GuidedTours (aka interactive tutorials) have been released—we now have one on editing items and one on editing statements! Both tours are available from the Wikidata:Tours portal and feedback can be left on the talk page at Wikidata_talk:Tours. The work was a combined effort of User:Bene* and Outreach Program for Women intern User:Thepwnco.
- We passed another milestone \o/ 10 million items now have an "instance of" or "subclass of" statement making it easy to tell what the item is about.
- Last week to add some selfies. We need more!
- Items with no image around you? Here you go! (change the number in the URL and click toggle markers) Thanks Magnus!

- Development
- Bene* worked with the dev team this week. He pushed forward support for storing badges (eg featured article) on Wikidata and implemented the first two guided tours.
- CTRL+ click and middle click on a search result in the entity selector now opens the result in a new tab.
- Further progress on redirects
- Fixed a number of annoyances with the entity selector
- Continued work on mockups for new user interface
- Investigated what issues come up if we make wikidata.org its own client. Things look good so we will probably enable it soonish. This will mean you can link Wikidata pages in items and access the data in them on other pages on Wikidata.
- Monthly Tasks
- Fix a format or content violation for the World Register of Marine Species identifier (P850) property
- Hack on one of these.
- Help fix these items which has been flagged using Wikidata - The Game.

Reference Errors on 15 July
Hello, I'm ReferenceBot. I have automatically detected that an edit performed by you may have introduced errors in referencing. It is as follows:
- On the David Jamieson (British politician) page, your edit caused a broken reference name (help). (Fix | Ask for help)

Break character in titles in templates
Do you know why there is a gap added by using the break character in the infobox template in articles such as James Gibbons. The gap looks awkward, as if there is a line of text that is missing. It is created by adding a break character before the person's name. If it is a style that has been agreed on, we should add it to the template directly, but to my eye it looks awkward. What do you think? Is it possible it is there just to add more color to the infobox? Look at James Roosevelt Bayley for one where I removed the gap. I am sure this has been discussed already, but you would be the one to know. You can change back Bayley after you peek at it. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 00:43, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
- @Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ): I think they're a legacy from a time before the template layout was improved. Remove them, as I just did on your former example. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:22, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

- No, Nikki, as an intelligent reading of the relevant diffs shows, I did no such thing. But you're still stalking my (and others') edits. How many times have I (and others) told you to stop doing that? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:21, 19 July 2014 (UTC)
- I confess that I also fell for the first impression. We know from the case that looking at a diff without context can result in strange evaluation. Do you remember that you reportedly deliberately parachuted into infobox editing disputes in such contentious areas (causing the comment "concerns me deeply"), where all you did was uncollapsing an infobox and placing it in the normal position. Nobody questioned the false evaluation (I tried at least), - that concerns me deeply. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:39, 19 July 2014 (UTC)
- Let's find out. Nikkimaria (talk) 12:18, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

Tech News: 2014-30
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please inform other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent software changes
- The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf14) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on July 17. It will be added to non-Misplaced Pages wikis on July 22, and to all Wikipedias on July 24 (calendar).
- CirrusSearch was removed as the primary search method from Wikimedia Commons and the Spanish (es) Misplaced Pages due to a high server load. The plan to enable it on the Dutch (nl), Japanese (ja), Polish (pl) and Russian (ru) Wikipedias was also postponed to a later date.
- The tool that stores information about languages (CLDR) was updated to its latest version. You can still help translate language names into your own language so they can be used in the sidebar and other places.
- Translation memory for newly translatable pages should now offer more suggestions.
- A tool to convert MediaWiki pages to LaTeX is now available on Tool Labs.
VisualEditor news
- Tablet users visiting the mobile version of Wikimedia wikis will be able to use a special version of VisualEditor starting on July 31. You can test the new tool by choosing the beta version of the mobile view in the Settings menu. Feedback is welcome.
- All windows in VisualEditor have now a new design. Main action buttons will always be located in the top bar and will use simple words rather than icons.
- You can now easily open links inside the link editor, for example to see their target.
- Several bugs related to the positioning of the cursor around some items (like images and references) were fixed last week.
Future software changes
- It will soon be possible to watch individual discussions in the Topic namespace rather than whole pages for talk pages using Flow.
- You can give comments about the new version of Winter, a proposal to have a fixed toolbar at the top of wiki pages.
- An IRC meeting to organize Pywikibot bugs will take place from July 24 to July 27 on the channel #pywikibot on freenode.
- A request for comments on how to improve MediaWiki API was re-started on MediaWiki.org. Your feedback is welcome.
Problems
- Mailing lists were broken for about 16 hours between July 14 and July 15 due to a server problem.
