The Russian invasion of Ukraine is an ongoing military conflict between Russia and Ukraine, following Russia's occupation and annexation of Crimea and the 2014 pro-Russian unrest in Ukraine. The conflict has been described as a "hybrid war," and began when Russia invaded mainland Ukraine. While Russian military has attacked Ukrainian positions previously and supported the pro-Russian separatists the outright invasion of Ukrainian territory by regular Russian troops came as President Vladimir Putin of Russia and President Petro Poroshenko met in Minsk, Belarus to discuss a possibility of a peace plan. At the end of the meeting Putin stated that the Russian government would "do everything" to support a peace plan.

The existence of a Russo-Ukrainian War became fact with reports of Russia moving Russian artillery onto the territory of Ukraine, the Ukrainian capture of Russian soldiers in Donetsk Oblast, who Russia claimed had crossed over "by accident", reports of Russia shelling Ukrainian territory, and reports of Russian military forces entering Ukraine near Novoazovsk. On August 24, 2014, President Poroshenko of Ukraine referred to the conflict as Ukraine's "Patriotic War of 2014" and a war against "external aggression". The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine labeled the conflict an invasion on August 27, 2014.

On August 27 two columns of Russian tanks have entered Ukrainian territory in support of the pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk and engaged Ukrainian border forces. NATO officials have stated that over 1000 Russian troops have invaded Ukraine, while the Russian government initially denied these claims. NATO has published satellite photos which showed the presence of Russian troops within Ukrainian territory. The pro-Russian separatists have admitted that Russian troops are fighting alongside them, stating that this was "no secret", but that the Russian troops were just soldiers who preferred to take their vacations fighting in Ukraine rather than "on the beach". The "Prime Minister" of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic stated that 3000 to 4000 Russian troops were fighting in separatist ranks.

Prior to the invasion, for at least a week, Russia had been shelling Ukrainian units from across the border, but instances of cross-border shelling from Russia had been reported since mid-July. At the time, Russian government spokesman denied these "allegations". As early as August 13, members of the Russian Human Rights Commission stated that over 100 Russian soldiers had been killed in the fighting in Ukraine and inquired why they were there. On August 28th, members of the commission called the presence of Russian troops on Ukrainian soil "an outright invasion".

Pro-Ukrainian anti-war protests took place in Mariupol which was threatened by Russian troops.

International response

  •  Latvia – Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics said the Russian invasion of Ukraine must be considered by the UN Security Council as an "act of aggression," and that "this is war."
  •  Lithuania – "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania strongly condemns the obvious invasion of the territory of Ukraine by the armed forces of the Russian Federation."
  •  Poland - Poland's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski called the invasion "the greatest security crisis in Europe in decades."
  •  Ukraine – Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament Oleksandr Turchynov said "It's a hybrid war that Russia has begun against Ukraine, a war with the participation of the Russian security services and the army."
