Animal abuse
On August 21, 2014, it was reported that the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BCSPCA) was investigating after receiving a surveillance video shot in an elevator of the Private Residences at Hotel Georgia in downtown Vancouver, Canada showing Desmond Hague, CEO of Centerplate, Inc., kicking his puppy repeatedly and yanking it violently on its leash. The search warrant issued as the result of the BCSPCA investigation identifies the man as Des Hague, CEO of Centerplate,Inc.
On August 23, 2014 it was reported Hague issued an apology through his legal counsel, stating in part "I take full responsibility for my actions, and I am ashamed and deeply embarrassed." Desmond Hague initially stated that the puppy was a "friend's pet" but the BCSPCA has stated, following its investigation, that the puppy Hague belonged to him, and not a friend. The statement issued by the Centerplate board of directors after its inquiry into the abuse of the puppy did not address Hague's initial dishonesty concerning ownership of the pet. The board did, however, put Mr. Hague on indefinite probation, require him to contribute $100,000 toward the establishment of a foundation in support of animal protection in Vancouver, and require him to serve 1,000 hours of community service with an animal welfare organization.
As a result of Mr. Hague's abuse of the doberman puppy, she has been removed from her home by officers of BCSPCA, who, according to court documents, were also appalled by the puppy's living conditions in Hague's home. Mr. Hague may still face criminal charges in British Columbia, Canada, where the abuse occurred. The BCSPCA has recommended criminal charges be filed against Mr. Hague. In its statement concerning Hague's abuse of the puppy, the Centerplate board of directors acknowledged the possibility that Hague could face criminal charges in Vancouver but did not indicate how the board would respond if such charges were filed.
Public reaction to Centerplate's response
A petition on Change.org requesting that Centerplate fire Des Hague had received over 170,000 signatures as of August 31 2014.
Additionally, if Centerplate chooses not to fire Mr. Hague, other individuals have called for a boycott of venue partners that currently contract with Centerplate for concession services. At least one vendor, the City of San Diego for Qualcomm Stadium, has indicated that it would carefully review its contract renewal with Centerplate before making a decision about how to proceed.
