==Plot== | |||
The movie begins in earnest by showing an incident that builds her interest in self-defence before showing her first interaction with a boxing gymnasium and coach and her entry into boxing. The movie then tells the story of her initial training, her struggle with a new sport, her immense dedication and will, her passion, while at the same time showing the immense struggle of balancing the needs of home and boxing and the additional sacrifices that she had to make to pay for her classes and equipment, all in the context of the poverty that was a constant in her early life.
The script builds up to the reasons for Mary’s first unsanctioned fight and the immense odds that she faces against a fancied opponent to win some money for her family. The script then engages with Mary’s relationship with the officialdom of the boxing federation and weaves in the challenges of that relationship into her burgeoning professional career in the larger context of Onler’s proposal and her decision to marry him and then giving birth to twins. Mary is shown balancing the demands of her training with the demands of her young children and how the balance is made possible by the unending attention of Onler, who learns to take care of the children under Mary’s supervision.
The story shows how the country writes her off and the pressures on her and her family to have her quit. And then it is shown how she makes a comeback and wins accolades, along with taking care of family and children.

Matt Patches from |
Matt Patches from Biography stated on his review, "It's thrilling to watch Chopra's Mary punch her way to success Rocky style, but it's even more fun to watch her plow through gender standards to return to the athletic profession after becoming a mother to twins. Mary defines her own womanhood in Mary Kom. She averts arranged marriage. After tying the knot with a man she loves, the boxer bows out of boxing at the peak of her career so she can start a family on her terms. When she feels the urge to kick butt once again — the way Chopra plays it, Mary doesn't take an interest in boxing, she's called it to like its a word from God — she sets up a punching bag outside her nursery. Whatever it takes, Mary fights for everything she wants to be in the world. No didactic lessons or embellished speeches required. Just good ol' fashioned working hard." <ref>{{cite web|last1=Paches|first1=Matt|title=TIFF: Priyanka Chopra as Mary Kom — Two Indian Women Americans Need to Know|url=http://www.biography.com/news/priyanka-chopra-mary-kom-movie-review|website=Biography|accessdate=7 September}}</ref> Deborah Young from Hollywood reporter pointed "Chopra adds a major credit to her acting carnet as a pretty firebrand hot to box, delivering enough punch to raise a convention-bound biopic to rousing entertainment". <ref>{{cite web|last1=Young|first1=Deborah|title=‘Mary Kom’: Toronto Review|url=http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/mary-kom-toronto-review-730682|website=Hollywood Reporter|accessdate=8 September 2014}}</ref>

Mary Kom is a 2014 Indian biographical sports drama film directed by Omung Kumar and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali on a story and screenplay written by Saiwyn Quadras. Rob Miller of ReelSports, the sports action director for Chak De! India and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, coordinated the sports action sequences for the film. Based on the life of the Indian boxer Mary Kom, the film stars Priyanka Chopra in the lead. Sunil Thapa, Darshan Kumaar, Shishir Sharma and Zachary Coffin also star in the movie. First look of the movie unveiled on 15 July 2014 by Priyanka Chopra. The film released on 5 September 2014 and was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2014.
Plot

Chopra began training for role of a boxer for 10 days before the shoot. She suffered an injury while shooting for the film which the make up team used and enhanced. Film is scheduled to release in two versions one for Indian audience and another for International audience.

Critical reception
On release, the film received generally positive responses from critics. Ranjita Ganesan of Business Standard stated on his review "Chopra’s performance is especially impressive. The actor leaves behind the baggage of glamour and stays believable, even when yelling, glaring and flying at people. " Bollywoodhungama network reviewed with 4 stars and stated, " The irony of the film is that, while it starts off with a pregnant Mary Kom (Priyanka), who later goes on to 'deliver' a performance of a lifetime. Mary and her ever-so-supportive husband Onler Kom (Darshan Kumaar) fight against all odds in a curfew stricken Manipur to ensure the safe delivery of Mary. Hereon, the viewers are subjected to a series of flashback events which lead to the making of the star pugilist 'Mary Kom'. Delving into her upbringing, the film explores her past that includes her father's strict opposition to boxing during her childhood and Mary's undying spirit and love for the sport. " Subhash K. Jha gave 5 stars to the movie and called it "one of the most inspiring bio-pics to have ever reached the silver screen". He also praised Chopra's performance stating that her "character on screen transforms totally into a real-life personality.".
Zee News review by Anindita Dev wrote "The fact is that Priyanka is bound to face criticism for the major flaws that are visible in her body language and looks—but the lady was committed and she gave it her all, despite being a non-boxer. This could possibly be her career best role. I take back home respect for Mary's husband, Onler, who should be a major inspiration to all the men out there. You can go back home basking in pride knowing about 'Magnificient' Mary and only wish the country would be more supportive to these superstars who are fighting against all odds, to make India proud. " Anupama Chopra of Hindustan Times rated the film 3 out of 5 and stated in her review "There’s been a lot of chatter about debutant director Omung Kumar’s decision to cast a glamorous Bollywood star who looks nothing like the actual Mary. This could have gone horribly wrong, but Priyanka meets the challenge head-on. Her shoulders and arms are sculpted to look lethal. Her face is a fierce combination of rage and vulnerability. Rohit Vats of Hindustan Times rated the film 2.5 and stated "Mary Kom is made for whistles and some quick money.". Ranjita Ganesan of Business Standard wrote in her review,.."Mary Kom is less about the sport and more about the sportsperson." . Suhani Singh of India Today rated the film 2 out of 5 and stated "Mary Kom doesn't have enough to pack a punch.". Rajeev Masand wrote in his CNN-IBN review,.."The film is watchable, but never great like it should've been." . Vinayak Chakravortyof India Today said in his review "It is the sort of make-belief that would seem amateurish even by a school-level play standard. The very Punjabi Priyanka tries her best to impress as Mary Kom, freckles on her face duly added by the make-up artist. She misses a boxer's body language in the ring sequences and manages a purely Bollywood heroine's routine in the scenes outside it.
Overseas
Just good ol' fashioned working hard." Deborah Young from Hollywood reporter pointed "Chopra adds a major credit to her acting carnet as a pretty firebrand hot to box, delivering enough punch to raise a convention-bound biopic to rousing entertainment".

The film was released on September 5, 2014 in over 3,000 screens across India It's first day box office collection is the 11th highest of 2014 The film collected ₹17.7 crore (US$2.1 million) in 2 days.
