Forglen House draft

Thanks for adding the pics into the draft for me, Hafspajen, it's very much appreciated! I've a long way to go on it yet but I've managed to find plenty of refs to use. I'm just hoping that once the weather improves - it's a bit wet and miserable today - I'll then be able to get some pictures of the mausoleum, which is in some woodland a little distance from the main house and up a rather rough muddy track. I think to get Drmies to notice (s)he is sitting in the Cultural depictions of dogs article, you might need to link his/her name in the caption? SagaciousPhil - Chat 13:57, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

Drat and double drat, I see you noticed the delicate lean on the main house picture? And here I was thinking I could start a new tourist attraction, a bit like the Leaning Tower of Pisa! SagaciousPhil - Chat 16:24, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

Toy galleries

Hello, we previously had some discussions about toy galleries, at Talk:Teddy bear and Talk:Toy, which inspired me to create a gallery at Dollhouse#Gallery. You can also see there what I mean about having encyclopedic information about the contents of the images. I hope you like it! By the way, I don't know if you noticed already, but if you're interested in creating toy galleries, many of the articles in Category:Traditional toys and subcategories have plenty of free images available that would make for good galleries without copyright troubles. Cheers, Siawase (talk) 20:03, 23 May 2014 (UTC) Very nice! Well done. Hafspajen (talk) 20:09, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

Thank you kindly! :) Siawase (talk) 20:12, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
  • Yes, it is correct, this is a very good gallery, timeline, illustrating a point, and so on. The trouble with the bears was that it was very little info on them in the common files, so I was only guessing. Hafspajen (talk) 20:09, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
You did a very good job. Hafspajen (talk) 20:28, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
I think I understand better now why the teddy bear gallery you created turned out the way it did. It's near impossible to create good galleries when the information about the images just isn't there. Cheers. Siawase (talk) 20:34, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

File:Leshan Sichuan China-Old bridge-02.jpg

We'd need to make it more prominent in the article, but what's your opinion of this? Adam Cuerden 17:02, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

Very nice, and a better place is doable. I would cut of just a little - NOT much, just sightly of the foregroung. It would be beneficial for the composition. But I would not touch the reflection in the water and leave quite a bit under the bridge reflection too. Crop off about ... half of the distance between the reflection of the bridge in the water and the edge of the pic as it is now. Hafspajen (talk) 17:08, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
That does cut off the top of the pagoda reflection on the right, though. Is that a problem? Adam Cuerden 21:50, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
I meant that the pagoda reflection should be the last thing seen in water. Not a problem, but it will make the picture closer to the Golden ratio. Hafspajen (talk) 21:54, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

Richmond wished to paint large, allegoric works. "An allegory conveys its hidden message through symbolic figures, actions, imagery, and/or events". So… Richmond paints Anchises with his fist grasping a twig at a suggestive angle. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 06:56, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
That was too... symbolic for me .. angle? 45... degree, Xanty ? Hafspajen (talk) 10:00, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
Well, I was trying to work out what Anchises held in his hand- it seems to be a twig, maybe broken off in a moment of passion as he glimpses Aphrodite. Can't work out what the doves are supposed to symbolise though (in this story)- maybe cat food for the two tabbies. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 06:30, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
That is no problem, Xanthomelanoussprog. The Dove and the Lions are indeed symbols. The dove is the sacred animal of Venus, for sure. And the lions - might be too. Hafspajen (talk) 11:09, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

Your Russian saint

A dog attempts to escape from the odor of Lutefisk

I fed part of the Russ WP article into Bing and got the following predictably garbled translation, from which you probably could glean enough for a caption.

Míša-Samuil (real name Mikhail Lazarev; 1848 — 23 February 1907)-pereslavsky whacky, revered in orthodoxy as he was canonized a Saint of Yaroslavl diocese.
Mikhail Lazarev was born into a peasant family of Yam, located near Pereslavl. The name "Samuel" added people as monašestvuûŝemu person for his strict Virgin life, after the death of Samuel, priest of St. Nicholas monastery.
With Misha's craziness. An eight year old boy he predicted Moore on the people in his village, and the villagers have demanded to kick him. It has sheltered in his cell, hieromonk Nicholas monastery, Samuel, who was the spiritual father of the boy.
Misha has spent all his life, wandering the city and its surroundings. Often visited Trinity slobodka, liked to be in the House where the beznogogo peasant Simeon Vukolova (now the House of 21).

Does that help? Sca (talk) 15:25, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

  • From Google-> Mikhail Lazarev was born in a peasant family Yam village located near Pereslavl. The name "Samuel" added people as monasticism person for his strict virgin life, after the death of Samuel, celibate priest of St. Nicholas Monastery.

Since childhood, Mike took over foolishness. Eight year old lad he predicted plague on the people in his village, and the peasants demanded oust him. Sheltered him in his cell Nikolsky monastery monk Samuel, who became the spiritual father of the boy.

Throughout his life, Misha spent wandering around the city and its surroundings. Frequented Trinity 'Village, where he loved to be in the house of the peasant drunk Vukolova Simeon (now house 21).

I suppose "legless" doesn't mean "drunk"! Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 16:36, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

The article now looks fantastic. Of course I like it! Thank you very much! :) --Goose friend (talk) 13:38, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

That's right! Uhde depicts it in each one of his paintings about Jesus. I know of no other artist that captures this feeling so well, and he painted many of these scenes. You might also like his paintings Sermon at the sea, Sermon on the mount, Lord, Stay with us, Road to Emmaus 1, Road to Emmaus 2, Road to Emmaus 3, The Sermon, The Lord's Supper (2), Christ healing the sick, and Grace. These paintings are outstanding but some are in black and white because they were taken from an old book and I've not been able to find them all in color. Anyways, Uhde had things to say about this. How I'd love to see a revival of this kind of art!--Goose friend (talk) 14:18, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

Hello

P.S. Krøyer: Roses (1893)
Hi Hafspajen. I seem to recall you have some expertise on roses, is that right? (Don't worry, I'm not demanding you send me a dozen). I'm looking for a link for a variety called Alba Maxima...
It's the rose featured in this painting ->
Most probably a Rosa alba semiplena - or so
...but there doesn't seem to be an article on it, so I wondered if there was some other rose I could point to (of the right family or genus or whatever). Thanks, Belle (talk) 14:17, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Rosa alba semiplena or a http://www.davidaustinroses.com/english/Showrose.asp?Showr=9 Rosa alba maxima, (The Jacobite Rose). . It looks like that - you can tell on the flowers and the way it grows, high and tall - well, one can just tell, if one have some rose-knowlege... Hafspajen (talk) 17:09, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. We seem to be short stocked on rose articles (that's probably the gender gap showing its effect; women like flowers, men like warships; not as a gifts on Valentine's Day though; "Darling, a bunch of frigates, how romantic!") Belle (talk) 17:36, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

"it is not going to pass with 1 oppose"

Art Collection of Prince Władysław Vasa

Hi Haffy, glad to see you're back. FPC is a bit different than the other Featured projects, in that an oppose doesn't mean death for a nomination. So long as it has at least 2/3rds (66%) supports (and 5 !votes), the image can pass. 4/5 is 80%, so the bird image is still passing. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:29, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

It is because of your wife's cooking... all married men's fate. But then you can always start keeping Ramadan.... ... Hafspajen (talk) 09:03, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
That's news. I never tried it of course... I never fast. Or eat fish on Friday... or any other meal-religious thing.. Why?Hafspajen (talk) 14:36, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
Has to do with how Muslims do their fasting during Ramadan. They don't just stop eating, but shift from eating 3 regular meals a day to 2 large ones, before fajr and after maghrib. It's very easy to overeat in such a situation, especially since sweet foods are very popular for breaking the fast. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:55, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
Hm, that sounds like just the opposite it was meant to (as far as I understood - loyality with the poor and behaving..) Hafspajen (talk) 15:06, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
  • They need only fast during the daylight hours. I'm not anywhere near an expert on the scriptural reasons, or the other practices, but I don't know any fasts in Islam which require 24 hours. Sawm has a bit more info. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:13, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
Yes, it say: Fasting is essentially an attempt to seek nearness to Allah and increase one's piety. One of the remote aims of fasting is to empathize with those less fortunate members of society who do not always have food and drink readily available.

Also, I can imagine many other ways getting closer to Allah (praying, singing, poems, love, nice pictures - well I mean BEAUTY- ).... that could be just as good. So - I guess that it is mostly about to understand how those who need things live... The American Indians have religious rites when they use fasting to get visions - but ... that takes more fasting than just from sunset to sunrise. Hafspajen (talk) 15:28, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

I'd call on Yngvadottir, but I'm scared the wolf has got her. I'd call on Mandarax, for artsy stuff and sex, but they're in the slammer for being a spammer. I would consider SPhil, but I think you know the drill: if it's wrote by Drmies then the prose ain't worth a ... dime. Good luck with it. Drmies (talk) 00:57, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

LOL. I have managed to clear one thing off my list today and am working madly on another, wrestling with Swedish while other household members make noise. And Hafspajen gave me two sets of Breughels to work on (see my talk page). But I'll see what I can do. Yngvadottir (talk) 01:02, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
Yngvadottir, you deserve a Carnegie medal. Or a nice, spicy, grilled Conecuh sausage. Something that says "thank you on behalf of the world". Drmies (talk) 01:19, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
Hey, thanks! Wonderful work, superb, simply just gorgious work, you too.... Hafspajen (talk) 07:50, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

You're both welcome. Unfortunately I really overdid it yesterday and made errors; luckily others came by and fixed them. Have now resumed work on the Five Senses. I'm just translating the French for now; there are presumably other sources that can be added later, but that article happens to be based on English sources in any case. For the second Five Senses article, I'll need to hunt more than for the current one. ... It's just one dog now, yes. Yngvadottir (talk) 16:23, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

Hafs, how are you? I happened to catch up reading on Sca's talk page because it was in our old conversation where you added some new thoughts. You sound unhappy. I looked at the FPC project yesterday. There is I guess some history with some contributors that I am not aware of, being new. I think it is not you; it is just a project where people can get quite emotional fairly fast and feelings do get hurt sometimes in the conversations. Some of Misplaced Pages is like that, unhappily.

I hope I have not made you unhappy with what you now know from my Simple talk page. I do not usually say, but I wanted you to know because I can be fragile. I can only contribute in areas where I don't get sad.

Simple English makes me sad, and I I was unhappy when you left, but really I should have told you, the admins are worse that grumpy there. I get complained at a bunch. It is not a good place for anyone who is easily hurt (as I think you are). Again, I hope I haven't made you sad. In a later chat I will tell you more about why I have to stay happy. For now, please just know if I stay out of some of the drama, it is to keep being happy. Please stay and be encouraged. Accept my apology if one is needed. Hafs, rest assured I am working on the Rudolf Koller translation. Sca (talk) 21:26, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

OK, it's done. Someone will have to figure out how to get rid of the note re translating. Sca (talk) 23:39, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

 Done

Was there a reason you didn't want to use Hay Harvest? Sca (talk) 14:42, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

One reason, wanted to wait until it will be more text - did't looked that good in the gallery - but did't succeded to add it - YET. Hafspajen (talk) 14:50, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

OK. There's also a pretty good painting by Koller of his wife. Yes, but where should we put that one - shall we chuck the cow? There are cows in the article already, but no wife. Or can we find other sources to expand a little more? Hafspajen (talk) 15:47, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

But she is mentioned: "Koller, 28, in May 1856 married Bertha Schlatter, whom he had painted the year before." Sca (talk) 16:15, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

I meant - no wife picture ... I think we should he the wife picture in article - and maybe chuck the cow ... Hafspajen (talk) 16:18, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

If you want me to close it I can, but you can also leave it open for a while if you think it might be referenceable (my spellchecker thinks that's not a word, but what does it know?). Belle (talk) 11:16, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

We were trying. I would hate to let down Sca, it would be fun to be able to find refs .. but now I tried and others too, and still facts are not referenced. I don't know what to do. See Sca's talk page too. Hafspajen (talk) 11:19, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
I'd leave it for a while, you can always withdraw it later; the nominations are weird, basically as long as you get the nom in before the deadline you can carry on working on it, and since you've put an "on hold" message on the nom, you've got some time. (Don't panic! Don't panic!). Belle (talk) 11:34, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
Well, easy for you to say - was panic-ing all yesterday about it already. WHERE shall I find refs? It is not much relief to know I can buy this Gotthards-Post and other paintings applied on http://www.porzellankompass.de/module-Pagesetter-viewpub-tid-4-pid-297-lang-en.html " porzellan" cups and plates Hafspajen (talk) 11:42, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Anyway, I don't understand this: In the cellar, on Zünd landscapes coined concept of "true real ideal landscape or ideal real landscape» is also Koller combination of precise study of nature, particularly the animal, and not the ideal, but the characteristic searching of composition aptly expressed.. What cellar. Hafspajen (talk) 19:06, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Well, no, because if you are in the cellar - you are not in the landscape... Hafspajen (talk) 19:24, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
Zund is an artist- I think it's Keller commenting on Zund's landscapes. Else it's an Aleph on the cellar stairs. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 19:36, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Some knowledgeable person could write something about how artists have depicted snow and ice, their use of blue shadows on snow, darkness, etc. People struggling in one way or another with snow & cold — how to get the viewer to 'feel' cold.... Sca (talk) 13:59, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

When I first wrote that on my talk page (three weeks ago), I thought you might be interested in producing, starting or somehow organizing a text. I'm simply not knowledgeable enough about art techniques or history to do so. (As I think you know, my areas of relative expertise include history and international relations, but not the fine arts.) I realize that English is not your first or even second language, though, so ... I don't know.
Re Magpie, I never did anything to The Magpie (Monet). Anyway, I'm tired of all the mean-spirited bickering at WP:FPC (and at WP:ITNC). For the present, I prefer to contemplate paintings I've assembled; I keep noticing new things in them. Paintings afford the artist many communicative possibilities not available to the photographer — though one also appreciates fine photographic work. Sca (talk) 15:42, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

Oh dear, that quick and dirty move to mainspace causes attribution problems. Everybody please stand back while I try to do a history merge. I always get confused, so it will take me a while. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:19, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

OK everybody: the histories are merged, but it's overwhelmingly the draft version I had saved before seeing Serten's message on my talk page. Xanthemeloumanossprog (sp! I know! sorry!) got in an edit right before I did the merge, so I have put in the categories from that version but you folks need to look carefully at the two last versions and rescue any other improvements that I hadn't seen. Now I suspect I have to co-walk a dog and go to a supermarket; no, I haven't forgotten about your article, Serten, I'm very sorry, I'm kind of busy, but tomorrow my "weekend" starts. Yup, I shot that pic. in '06 from LT across the river from Neman, RU (ex-Ragnit) a few km. upstream from Sovetsk (ex-Tilsit). The Teutonic Knights passed that way repeatedly in the late Middle Ages. They used the river as a water-borne highway to 'pagan' Lithuania, where they rampaged and pillaged — the last crusade.
I got Impressionists in Winter at the library. It's a nice thick tome, but looks to be mainly about those ever-popular French Impressionists. My moody Russkis are left out in the ... cold. Sca (talk) 23:30, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

I had a quick scan through the Bulldog talk- can't make much sense of it. The names seem to be more prevalent outside of the UK, and may reflect confusion between "British" and "English". I've never heard of an English Bulldog- the bulldog as emblem is always a British emblem, with a Union Jack coat. It might be that the flare-up is due to the rise of English nationalism recently. Alas, the pic. of a young Koller (sorry, but believe you added it) seems to be of his friend Böcklin. Image data on Commons include: Description — Bildnis Arnold Böcklin, Gemälde von Rudolf Koller, 1847 (my emph.) — so that needs to be fixed, too. Sca (talk) 17:57, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Well, if it's a pic. of Böcklin, which it is, we can't use it big & high on the Koller page with the strong implication (by juxtapositioning) that it illustrates the person of Koller. Re your questions

I apologise, Hafspajen. I was mistaken in thinking your comment had been edited out and I have said so at ANI.
The exchange I was referring to is this; you wrote:
Support, so many people can't be wrong. Subject is decent by modern standards. So many people can ertainly not wrong be wrong about that issue. Age - what? I have a friend that looks almost like this - and she is 30 years. And yes, we sick Scandinavian people do go swiming together all naked everywhere - and nobody turns a hair. We go to sauna too, same thing - all naked together, no problem. If God created man in his own image, so what's the problem? The human body is a natural thing - though some might find it repulsive - well, that's their problem, and it is in their mind, not in the real world. It can be easy to find faults everywhere - if one is loking hard enough... It looks like we are still back in the same old puritan times when this picture was scandalous - what does it say on progress? Let's not all behave like old world Victorians who put covers on the legs of the chairs and the tables because it made them excited.
I responded:
Comment Hafspajen, sorry, but you're missing the point. Neither I nor, I assume, Coat of Many Colours is objecting to nudity as such. I myself had a clothing-optional early childhood, as an older woman I continue to be shockingly immodest by North American standards (shocked a doctor - again - just days ago), I can't think of much that's more ridiculous than having to be clothed to swim or not being able to go naked when it's too hot for clothes, and I have been frequenting the great galleries of Europe for fifty years totally unfazed by 99.9% of the nudes. The problem is not the FACT of nudity, but in this instance the exploitative NATURE of the depiction of the nakedness of an underage girl.
The reason it makes you look bad is because, as I said, you were not addressing the point of what CoMC had said many times over. Instead, you were arguing against something s/he had never said. That’s not fair debate.
Awien (talk) 22:57, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Since you like landscapes

How about Niagara Falls?

Tahitian Gauguin

Paul Gauguin is well known for his representations of tropical scenes, mostly including naked young women. He traveled to many different paradise islands in his time and with so many different sights to inspire him, it is no surprise that the majority of his artwork stems from these visits. The one pictured here is titled 'Aha oe Feii' and features two native ladies who are enjoying the heat of the day and relaxing next to a nearby tree. Painted with the characteristic muted and earthy colours, this art print by Gauguin would work wonders to transport you to a relaxing, tropical island whenever you need it.

This painting belongs to the stage of Tahitian Gauguin. The painter, who moved to the South Seas, had started painting with exotic content. He depicted especially women who are portrayed nude - chaste and pure nudity-. He intended to show the islands of the Pacific Ocean as a little corner of paradise where people live ain peaceful harmony between human and nature. this concept remains a mystery. Gauguin came from the world of Western Europe, much more complex and filled with selfish social and political and economic interests. Gauguin discovered there a different life. A life more simple and pure, simple but very obvious, made of genuine things, pervaded by a spirituality.

In this painting depicts two women, one sitting and the other outstretched on the beach. The subject is described by the painter in his book "Noa Noa":

two sisters on the beach that had just taken a bath, lay in random voluptuous attitudes, talk about a love of the past and of the future projects of love. A reminder of the divide: "What! Are you jealous? "

As usual in the paintings of Gauguin, the title of the work is written on the canvas, in this case in the lower left. It is written in Tahitian and its exotic sound serves to give more charm to the picture, a phrase actually uttered by the two women, to give more specific content to the framework.

If it was not for this phrase in the corner of the painting, the depiction could be mistaken for a pure decorative symphony of colours, searching only for the formal beauty of their bodies. But Gauguin meant a different stament with this picture. It has different meaning: the complicity of all women in the dialogue about the deepest, timeless mystery of life: love. The eternal feeling of love and searching about its meaning.

The picture with its decorative characteris more a two-dimensional image than a three dimensional.

Gauguin was very fond of this picture, so that in a letter to a friend he wrote: "I've been doing lately a naked heart, two women on the beach, I think it's also my best so far."

The painting was later bought by the Russian collector Sukin and like all the rest of his collection was nationalized by the Soviet state immediately after the October Revolution. Today the picture is displayed in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow.

Sorry!

Rene Lalique Edit

Attributed to Parmigianino, Formerly attributed to Raphael, possibly Antonio da Correggio

Hello Hafspajen. I decided to write you because of your status as a long time editor. I am writing concerning your undoing an edit (that itself was an undo) I made on the Rene Lalique page. A person created an entirely new section called Public Collections as well as at the same time or near that time, other related external links were placed elsewhere on the page. In the new section, they then listed 4 or 5 “museums” some linked to wiki pages about that museum, some to the museum, some without links. I undid their entire edit in good faith. I had three issues with the major edit:

1. The first so called museum on the list is a dealer’s related museum that is part of a cross linked sales effort by a dealer. The so called museum shares a mailing address, a phone number and website IP address with the dealer. The two sites, the dealer sales site and the “museum” site are cross linked to each other. The people involved buy and sell Lalique and send out emails and inquiries for buying and selling using their various museum titles. I believe this “museum” is of zero value to the wiki project. I recently removed several spam links related to that dealer and museum that were put in at the same time on the Rene Lalique page which you can see from the history. The inclusion of that so called museum makes the entire section appear to me as vandalism, and even more so being shortly after the insertion and removal of the spam links to that dealer and museum. I can’t imagine that any serious person would include that “museum” on a list of museums that might be of value to the wiki project.

2. I have a good faith belief that the person putting up the new section I reverted has a COI (not related to the dealer museum information as far as I know)

However even if this is not the case, it would have still been my decision to undo the new section based on the first “museum” on the list and the following 3rd issue.

3. Note the newly placed external links to the Rijksmuseum (this museum is also in the newly created section) and the V & A museum in the reference section. I believe these external links are spam, are out of place in the reference section as nothing in the article is validated by a citation to the information on those lines, let alone external links (the links are to picture pages), and these may also be COI. I thought I was deleting those also as part of the undo that you reversed.

In short, I believe that the newly created section is spam, vandalism, and possibly a COI as well, in addition to not adding anything substantive to the page. And that doesn’t account for the negative impact of the sales linked “museum” appearing on the page as part of this new section quickly after I deleted the previous spam entries. The other external links to picture pages at two museums (one of which is also in the new section) added as references are not references at all, are link spam and may be COI as well.

That is why I reverted the entry. I assume you could not know all of what I have written when you undid my edit to remove these things.

Respectfully, Patagoniaddd (talk) 20:35, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Then please remove the link. But the name of the museum is good to have, can you leave that? Hafspajen (talk) 20:42, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello. Thank you for the reply.

How about this: I will remove the spam references and the new section. I will add a sentence to the main listing saying that the works of Rene Lalique are in the collections of a large number of public institutions around the world including ….. and I will mention half a dozen serious museums as examples……. the Gulbenkian, the Rijksmuseum, the Musee Lalique and the Musee des art decoratif in France, the New York Metropolitan Museum, and the Corning Museum. This will leave the Rijksmuseum on the page. I got these names from the ongoing compilation of museums holding the works of Rene Lalique that is taking place at rlalique.com at this page: rlalique.com/rlalique/lalique-museum.php.

Would this be reasonable both from a common sense standpoint, cleaning up the issues, and also be of value to readers of the page?

Patagoniaddd (talk) 15:15, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

Yes, a very good compromise, Patagoniaddd. Very clever, do so. Hafspajen (talk) 19:35, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

Winter again

Not. This book is indeed about the French Impressionists. It focuses mainly on Monet, Pissarro and Alfred Sisley, with nods to a few others, and includes much biographical detail. It seems to be sort of a glorified brochure for an exhibit sponsored by J.P. Morgan Co. in 1999. Its relevance to my semi-Russified gallery is minimal; furthermore, I don't particularly care for Pissarro's style, or Sisley's either.

To reiterate: When it comes to art history and criticism, I'm out of my depth. A knowledgeable art historian could write something useful; I can't. Besides which, lately I've been much distracted by trying to fix my broken garage-door opener, which for an American is an absolute necessity to life as we know it. Spent most of yesterday trying to figure it out. Grrrrrr.

Sorry. Sca (talk) 14:32, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

Well, are we going to write rthat article we have to start SOMEWHERE. We start and will see. Hafspajen (talk) 14:35, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

Just seen a Sebastopol Samuel Holland, windmill with distant view of a village and town, in filthy and damaged condition, but the quality of brushwork stands out- "lot 91 Good quantity of framed pictures and prints". Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 14:03, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

Well at least a stubb we can always make , Sebastopol Samuel Holland (1880-1911) was an English -British? painter, like http://www.bamfords-auctions.co.uk/buying/auctions/Three-Day-Antiques-and-Fine-Art-Sale--March-2007/lot-1194-Sebastopol-Samuel-Holland-British-A-quiet-moment/ ... A-quiet-moment .... You have a list of some of his works here ... Hafspajen (talk) 14:19, 10 October 2014 (UTC) Probably not him. Hafspajen (talk) 14:21, 10 October 2014 (UTC) Here is something that might get uploaded, since we have 0 of him on commons. http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/13537/lot/203/Hafspajen (talk) 14:23, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

WHY IS THIS BLACKLISTED?

too. Hafspajen (talk) 14:31, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

Oh, thank you! Hafspajen (talk) 14:58, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! I couldn't find that! I think he's probably an East Midlands painter- the windmill painting should be easy to trace (stone-built tower windmill with a boat-shaped cap) Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 16:17, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
Well, a list of his paintings, and a stubb will do to start with.. Hafspajen (talk) 16:23, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

DYK?

Mr. C.

... that John C. Calhoun before the American Civil War infamously defended slavery as a "positive good"? Sca (talk) 14:20, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

Never said he was positive. I said he was energetic. He is creepy of course, but well captured. Hafspajen (talk) 14:30, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
Understand. In the painting his eyes look kinda ... frenzied, fanatical. Sca (talk) 14:53, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

I think four images at the top is too many - too much page space before the text starts. What we could do is add a smaller gallery between the articles and pictures, though. The trouble is that the galleries tend to start breaking into two lines at narrower screen widths, unless you very carefully watch how much you're putting in them. Adam Cuerden 16:10, 12 October 2014 (UTC) Well, it was just a suggestion. Hafspajen (talk) 19:32, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
