This is the first season of the series that is not strictly anthological, with characters appearing from the series' second cycle, American Horror Story: Asylum. Notable returning cast members from previous installments of the series include: Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Denis O'Hare, Frances Conroy, Jamie Brewer, Lily Rabe, Sarah Paulson, Naomi Grossman, Emma Roberts, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Gabourey Sidibe, Danny Huston and Grace Gummer.
Plot
The fourth season follows the lives and torment of a troupe of people belonging to one of the last remaining freaks shows of its time, set it Jupiter, Florida in 1952. Template:AHSCharacter (Jessica Lange) is the owner of Fraulein Elsa's Cabinet of Curiosities; one of the last traveling freak show’s in the country which she created herself. Her performers, which she named her monsters, include the bearded lady Template:AHSCharacter (Kathy Bates), her son Template:AHSCharacter (Evan Peters), the strongman Template:AHSCharacter (Michael Chiklis) and his three-breasted wife Template:AHSCharacter (Angela Basset), as well as the newly recruited conjoined twin sisters Template:AHSCharacter (Sarah Paulson).
Danger lurks in the sleepy hamlet of Jupiter; one of them being the serial killer Template:AHSCharacter (John Carroll Lynch), the cause of recent slayings and kidnappings that plagued the town. Thought to be responsible for the murders after their mother is found stabbed to death, Bette and Dot are discovered stabbed themselves at their farmhouse. The news makes headlines, and soon Elsa discovers the twin’s existence. Believing the sisters to be her troupe's saviors, she brings them back to camp. They meet their fellow freaks Template:AHSCharacter (Mat Fraser) who has seal-like flippers for hands, Template:AHSCharacter (Erika Ervin) who is the giantess and strong woman of the show, and finally the tiny treasure from India, Template:AHSCharacter (Jyoti Amge) who is the smallest woman in the world. Bette sees the show as their haven, finally having escaped the confinement of their former lives. But Dot, who is more cynical towards the world sees this as their own version of hell, being exploited for their appearance.
Tensions rise when a detective visits the freak show at night, putting Bette and Dot under arrest for the recent string of murders. After calling them all freaks and threatening to drive them out of town, Jimmy slices the detective’s throat with a razor and the freaks dispose of his body. After a performance, which was bought out by wealthy society widow Template:AHSCharacter (Frances Conroy) and her emotionally stunted son Template:AHSCharacter (Finn Wittrock). Dandy demands to buy the twins, offering Elsa $15,000 for the twins, but the offer is declined by Bette and Dot who now call this place their home. Enraged by his boring life, Dandy sets out to join the freak show. Jimmy turns him down claiming Dandy isn't a freak at all, setting him in a fit of rage. Hoping to cheer her son up, Gloria finds Twisty on the side of the road and brings him home to surprise Dandy. Noticing the clown isn't your everyday clown, Dandy searches inside his bag and finds a severed head, causing Twisty to knock Dandy out and run away. Following the murderer back to an abandoned school bus in the middle of the woods, Dandy discovers the kidnapped children and realizes the two could have some fun together.
New to the troupe are strongman Dell and his wife Desiree, who fled Chicago after Dell murdered a man having sex with Desiree. Elsa allows him to be the shows bodyguard, but he soon becomes more than she can handle after he demeans her and beats up Jimmy. Ethel is less than happy about Dell's arrival, and it it revealed that he and Ethel were married, and after trying to kill his own son Jimmy, Ethel made him leave. When she learns that her liver is failing, Ethel makes Dell promise to look after Jimmy when she dies, though he is never to tell the boy of his true lineage.
After visiting the Museum of Morbid Curiosities, con artists Template:AHSCharacter (Denis O’Hare) and Template:AHSCharacter (Emma Roberts) set their eyes on Jupiter, hoping to make some money by selling the freak's corpses to the museum. Posing as a fortune teller, Maggie joins the troupe and soon falls for Jimmy. On Halloween, Ethel tells the urban legend of Template:AHSCharacter (Wes Bentley), a man born with a face on the back of his head as well as the front, who, if summoned on Halloween, will take a freak to hell with him. Elsa performs Gods and Monsters on Halloween night, unknowingly summoning him; Mordrake goes around camp learning the heartbreaking tales of its performers. Coming to Elsa's tent, she reveals her past life in Germany, where she worked as a dominatrix. Mordrake asks about her missing legs and it is revealed that Elsa was the victim of Hans Grüper, also known as Template:AHSCharacter (James Cromwell), who amputated her legs during the filming of a snuff film. Mordrake is about to choose Elsa to take to hell, but he hears music that reveals Elsa is not the one. Jimmy and Maggie try to rescue the kidnapped children after discovering Twisty, but Dandy knocks them out and puts on a show with Twisty. The pair soon escape and Mordrake visits Twisty, asking to learn his tale. He learns that Twisty worked as a clown at a freak show, and after two dwarves convince him the police are after him, Twisty attempts suicide, which backfires and causes his jaw to be blown off. After revealing his misdeeds, though still not apologetic, Mordrake stabs and kills Twisty.
Now that his mentor is dead, Dandy kills his maid Template:AHSCharacter (Patti Labelle), soon followed by prostitute Template:AHSCharacter (Matt Bomer). Gloria, after learning of Dandy's bloodlust, asks Dandy to see a therapist. After Dora's daughter Template:AHSCharacter (Gabourey Sidibe) visits Mott Manor looking for her mother, Dandy asks Gloria to kill Regina to prove herself to him. Gloria attempts to end the madness, but Dandy steals her gun, shooting his mother in the head and later bathing in a tub full of her blood. Stanley, while staying at the camp posing as a Hollywood talent agent, pressures Maggie to murder Jimmy and Ma Petite, but she can't go through with either of the deeds. He turns to Dell and threatens him with knowing his homosexual tendencies, and Dell kills Ma Petite by breaking her spine.
Overhearing Elsa's plans to help get rid of the twins with Stanley, Ethel confront Elsa and believes her of being behind Ma Petite's death. Shooting Elsa in her wooden leg and planning to kill herself, Elsa throws a dagger through Ethel's eye and kills her. After she and Stanley pose her death to make it look like a suicide, Jimmy sinks into a drunken despair over his mother's death. Dandy offers a detective one million dollars to kill Regina, which he does so, then visits Jimmy's Tupperware party women and massacres them all, framing Jimmy for the crime. Elsa prepares for her move to Hollywood after Stanley promises her a career in television, but when Dell soon tells her of Stanley convincing Jimmy to sell his hands to afford bail, she realizes he isn't to be trusted. Traveling salesman and magician Template:AHSCharacter (Neil Patrick Harris) soon visits the freak show, falling in love with the twins and taking their virginity. Elsa sells the show to him, but has little idea that he is a psychopath that believes his doll Marjorie is alive.
Once he admits his act of killing Ma Petite to Desiree, Elsa shoots Dell in the head and kills him. During a feast to welcome the new owner, the freaks reveal they know of Stanley's true purpose, after Maggie confessed to Desiree of his acts. Desiree killed the curator of the museum and gives her head to Stanley. Pleading for his life, the freaks chase Stanley around camp, later amputating his limbs and turning him into their own version of Template:AHSCharacter. Needing a new owner for her freak show after Chester killed Maggie by sawing her in half, Elsa sells the show to Dandy and moves to Hollywood when the freaks turn on her for killing Ethel.
The freaks also turn on Dandy and quit the show, but this proves fatal as Dandy massacres all of them except Desiree, the twins and Jimmy. Bette soon marries Dandy, but this is all revealed to be an act of vengeance, as Desiree drugs Dandy at dinner. He awakens to find himself chained in Hardeen Houdini's Chinese torture tank; he is then drowned by the remaining freaks for massacring their family.
In 1960, Elsa is now a household name with her very own TV show and multiple hit songs. Even with fame and fortune, Elsa is still unhappy with her life and meets with her old flame Template:AHSCharacter (Danny Huston). Learning that Massimo is dying, the president of WBN tells Elsa that a copy of her snuff film has surfaced and that all of her freaks died after she left Florida. She agrees to perform on a live telecast on Halloween, summoning Edward Mordrake and his troupe, who kills her on TV. During the telecast, we see a married Desiree who is now a mother of two children, as well as a pregnant Bette and Dot who are happily married to Jimmy. Instead of taking her to hell, Mordrake banishes Elsa to a reincarnation of her freak show, where all of her deceased freaks now reside. Elsa takes the stage to perform, finally finding love and happiness with her true family.

Production
Development
–Series co-creator Ryan Murphy on the fourth season"It feels like a Douglas Sirk movie; it's very 1952 presentational and then the horror is an unexpected jab. As opposed to last year, which was crazy camera work and comedy. This year feels different."
On November 6, 2013, FX announced that the show had been renewed for a fourth season. Series co-creator Ryan Murphy hinted that clues about the fourth season would be hidden in the final episodes of the third season. On March 17, 2014, the season was revealed to be set at a carnival, according to co-executive producer/writer Douglas Petrie. It was also revealed that Lange will be playing a role similar to Marlene Dietrich. Murphy revealed that the season will take place in 1950, adding: "If you look historically what happened in the year 1950, there's some more clues in that year. It's a period piece. We try and do the opposite of what we've done before. Jessica Lange has already started practicing her German accent so I'm very excited!" Murphy indicated that this season draws inspiration from Tod Browning's Freaks and Herk Harvey's Carnival of Souls. This season features the largest set ever constructed for American Horror Story, with Murphy stating: "We had to build an entire city. We built an entire huge compound and then we had to build the interior of all those buildings on set. It’s all period. And it's all based on Mark Worthington's immaculate research."
Casting
Ryan Murphy confirmed that Jessica Lange would be returning for a fourth season, although said to be in a reduced capacity. Kathy Bates also returned in a main role. In January 2014, Murphy revealed that Coven cast member Patti LuPone was invited back for the fourth season. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Paulson revealed she would be returning, possibly for a main role. Angela Bassett confirmed in an interview with Access Hollywood that she would be coming back. It was announced at the 2014 PaleyFest that the cast members present at the panel would all be returning for the fourth season in some capacity, adding Denis O'Hare, Emma Roberts, and Gabourey Sidibe to the present roster. Jamie Brewer was also added to the present roster, although, at a later date, Murphy indicated Brewer may not appear during the season. Brewer was later confirmed after appearing in a promo for the final two episodes. Additionally, Michael Chiklis was announced to play the father of Peters' character and ex-husband of Bates' character. Wes Bentley appeared in two episodes as Edward Mordrake, a tormentor from the past. The Normal Heart actor Finn Wittrock joined the cast in late July 2014, as the psychopathic Dandy Mott. John Carroll Lynch portrayed one of the central antagonist during the season, Twisty the Clown. Grammy winner Patti LaBelle played the mother of Sidibe's character, named Dora, the Motts' housekeeper. On August 13, 2014, Murphy announced that the world's smallest woman Jyoti Amge has joined the cast, as Ma Petite. Murphy had written a role specifically for Coven actor Leslie Jordan, but he was unable to appear on the show due to scheduling conflicts. The Normal Heart's Matt Bomer appeared in "Pink Cupcakes", as Andy, Dell's secret lover. On September 11, 2014, it was reported that Asylum actor Naomi Grossman would return to portray Pepper, which marks the first time a character appears in multiple seasons of the series. Lily Rabe also appeared as her Asylum character Sister Mary Eunice McKee in the tenth episode, "Orphans". Coven actress Mare Winningham made an appearance in the same episode, as Pepper's sister Rita. Neil Patrick Harris appeared in two episodes as Chester, who takes over the freak show when Elsa leaves for Hollywood. Harris' husband, David Burtka, guest starred in the season finale as Elsa's husband.
Filming
–Co-creator Brad Falchuk on shooting in New Orleans, Louisiana"There's something going on there that is so non-American but totally American, so sexy and dark but there's hope everywhere."
At Paley Center for Media's 2014 PaleyFest event, Ryan Murphy announced that the season's filming would take place again in New Orleans, Louisiana, although the show's setting is in Jupiter, Florida.
The premiere episode was directed by co-creator Murphy, his first effort since the pilot.
Principal photography for the season began on July 15, 2014, and concluded on December 19, 2014.
Marketing
A video released on July 13, 2014, entitled "Fallen Angel", was reported by many news sources to be an official Freak Show trailer. The video – which featured the American Horror Story title card – was later taken down after FX confirmed it was fan-made. Before the debut of the fan-made video, FX had not released any official trailers concerning the upcoming season. The first official teaser was released on August 20, 2014, entitled "Admit One".
As with previous seasons, FX released a series of teaser trailers on the show's YouTube page. FX also used the marketing hashtag #WirSindAlleFreaks in the German language, and its English translation #WeAreAllFreaks.
