Template:Future election

The 2006 Vaughan, municipal election will take place on 13 November 2006, to elect a mayor, three regional councillors and five local councillors in the city of Vaughan, Ontario, Canada. It is being held in conjuction with all other municipalities in Ontario. See Ontario municipal elections, 2006.

A local newspaper, the Vaughan Citizen has confirmed that community activist Gino Ruffolo, whose wife is currently suing the city for wrongful dismissal, will run against current Mayor Michael Di Biase. Another article indicates Ruffolo promises to take a 20 percent paycut if he is elected. Regional Councillor Linda Jackson, daughter of deceased former mayor Lorna Jackson, whose estate is also suing the city, has announced her intention to run for the mayor's position.

The Globe and Mail newspaper reports that Mayor Di Biase receives a salary of $164,074 per year, making him one of the highest-paid municipal politician in the country. The mayor of the largest city in Canada, David Miller of Toronto, which is over ten times the size of Vaughan in terms of population, receives only $143,635 per year. The average salary of Vaughan councillors is $102,657, compared to Toronto councillors at $85,497.

Controversy

In the June edition of Ward 5 - Thornhill Update, a community newsletter written and distributed by Ward 5 Councillor and upcoming candidate Alan Shefman, holds a contest entitled "5 for 5: Win a Prize." Shefman urges the community to send him the names of five Ward 5 email addresses.

The contest asks residents to:

"Please Send us the names and email addresses of 5 Ward 5 residents and we will enter you in a draw to win a wonderful Vaughan logo item – coffee mug, hat, pen, etc."

While there is no mention as to whether or not Shefman will use these emails on his mailing list, Ward 5 candidate Elliot Frankl has been critical of this contest, as he feels it may bring privacy issues into question. If Shefman is compiling a mailing list for campaign purposes, Frankl is concerned that city resources could be used for campaign purposes (the contest prizes), which would violate the Election Act. Frankl has contacted Vaughan Council with this issue and is awaiting a response.
