"She Drives Me Crazy" is a 1989 international hit single, co-written and sung by Roland Gift of English group Fine Young Cannibals. The song reached Top-5 charts in many countries worldwide.

Background

The unique snare drum "pop" sound of "She Drives Me Crazy" was created by recording the snare drum portion separately; speaker was then placed on top of the snare drum, with a microphone below. The original recording of the snare-drum part was played back through the speaker, and re-recorded. The song was included on Fine Young Cannibals' 1988 album, The Raw & the Cooked.

Released on the New Year's Day, "She Drives Me Crazy" peaked at number 5 on the United Kingdom singles' chart in January 1989, before hitting number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States on April 15, 1989. The single also topped the charts in Australia, Austria, Canada, New Zealand, Spain, and the United States Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart.

The song was re-released in 1997 in support of Fine Young Cannibals' compilation album, The Finest. The album included a remix by Roger Sanchez, as well as Mousse T. remixes of "Johnny Come Home." The 1997 single reached number 36 on the UK Singles Chart.

Lyrical content

"She Drives Me Crazy" is a song about a man having a love-crush on a woman, and being obsessed with her to the point that it makes him crazy.

Music video

Two music videos were released for "She Drives Me Crazy" - one video was produced by Philippe Decouflé, and the other by Pedro Romhanyi. The Decouflé's popular video version of "She Drives Me Crazy" includes extensive choreography with performers in unusual costumes, including two identical dancers with different colored-outfits, as well as a person with a television set on his head. Philippe Decouflé's music video received several nominations at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, including Best Video.

Other versions

Early years

"Weird Al" Yankovic parodied "She Drives Me Crazy" as "She Drives Like Crazy" for his 1989 soundtrack album UHF – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack and Other Stuff, alluding that his woman is a bad driver. American comedian Arsenio Hall, under the pseudonym "Chunky A", recorded a novelty parody of the song called "Ho is Lazy," which appears on the 1989 album Large and in Charge. Former Cantopop singer Yvonne Lau Man-Kuen released a Cantonese cover based on the song named "The Grey Art Gallery" in 1990. The Flying Pickets recorded an a cappella version for their 1994 The Original Flying Pickets: Volume 1 album. Opening track with Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy was recorded for the 1994 Muppet album Kermit Unpigged; a music video, featuring cameo appearances by various celebrities, was also released to promote the album. Sesame Street's characters sing a cartoon parody song named "C Drives Me Crazy" in 1994, with a Muppet camel in the Mojave Desert (voiced by Paul Jacobs) singing about how he loves the letter and things that start with C, featuring an introduction by Jerry Nelson.

Later years

Dolly Parton covered the song for her 2008 album, Backwoods Barbie, titled "Drives Me Crazy," released as a single to Adult Contemporary stations in January 2009. American singer and songwriter Sharon Van Etten performed her version of the song in May of 2011 for The A.V. Club's A.V. Undercover video-series. American electronic-industrial musical project Aesthetic Perfection covered the song as a B-Side on their 2012 single "A Nice Place to Destroy." The Good Natured, English synthpop band, released a cover of "She Drives Me Crazy" on their 2013 Extended play release of their song "5-Ht." Electric Six recorded a cover version of the song in 2014, as part of a pledge package for their Absolute Treasure kickstarter campaign, and they subsequently released it online.
