Bad Magic is the twenty second studio album by the band Motörhead released on 28 August, 2015, and is the fifth release under the UDR GmbH / Motörhead Music collaboration of the previous five years.

Due to the death of founder Lemmy Kilmister four months after the album's release, the band disbanded after 40 years on the road. Mikkey Dee stated to numerous media that's the end of the band.

"When the Sky Comes Looking for You" was the only song from this album to be played live, to current knowledge.

Background

Lemmy, "Fast" Eddie Clarke and the late Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor started the band in 1975 (after Larry Wallis and Lucas Fox left) but Eddie left the band after 7 years as the guitarist in 1982, replaced by Brian "Robbo" Robertson (of Thin Lizzy fame) for the recording of Another Perfect Day. Philip "Zööm" Campbell and the late Michael "Würzel" Burston joined in 1984 as a double guitarists 4 piece, after Brian and Phil left the band at the end of 1983, with the addition NWOBHM drummer Pete Gill (ex-Saxon) during 1984 also. Phill Taylor returned with the sacking of Pete Gill in 1987, until he himself was sacked in 1991. Mikkey Dee joined the band in 1992 during the 1916 album sessions as the bands drummer, permanently replacing Phil Taylor this time. During the recording of Sacrifice in 1995, Würzel left the band, though he was sort of fired at the same time, by the various reports.

Lemmy, Philip and Mikkey have since spent 20 years as a three piece and are the most consistent and continuous line-up, beating the original 'classic' line-up of Kilmister, Clarke, Taylor by more than double the amount of time. They were the Motörhead line-up that the majority of people saw live over the years around the world, and the line-up Lemmy considered the best of them in various memoirs of the band he has contributed to over the years, including White Line Fever and Overkill: The Untold Story of Motörhead.

Lemmy remained friends with Eddie (after s few years had passed) and Phil over the years, and has had mixed comments about it all through those years, but with hindsight didn't lament the change in the end. Phil never played with the band live again after 1991 but "Fast" Eddie appeared at a lot of England gigs after the mid nineties, including on the 25th anniversary live album Live at Brixton Academy in 2000. Both former members have since done the documentary The Guts and the Glory with Lemmy, Mikkey and Philip in September 2010, which cleared up a lot of rumours from over the years. Würzel, Brian and Pete Gill did not participate though.

Würzel passed away from cardiomyopathy on the 9 July 2011, and Phillthy passed away on the 15 November 2015 from liver failure, a month before Lemmy, leaving Eddie the only original member left.

Mikkey and Philip have had side projects that they have committed to over the years and still collaborate with various musicians to his day.

Lemmy was the only constant member of the band, and is credited with writing nearly all the lyrics, but each song the band ever released, with few exceptions, always displayed the current line-up, purely for Royalties reasons so each member would make some money out of any hit they may have, Lemmy having learnt that the hard way back in his youth with Jimi Hendrix and Hawkwind, and never thought it was fair any other way.

The Roman numerals present on the cover translate as the number 40 and are the years Motörhead had been playing at the time of release and printing the album cover, which doesn't change upon Lemmy's death as he died the same year.

Recording

Bad Magic was written and recorded in L.A., and Cameron Webb again produced the album. In an interview Motörhead drummer Mikkey Dee told the press that the recording process was different than previously:

"..this time we were in a recording studio writing the album and all playing it together, actually. Before, we used to be in a rehearsal studio, write the songs and then we'd go in and record it one at a time, but here we kind of recorded it live, right away, as we had the song. We used to write very spontaneous, and this is probably even more spontaneous than any Motörhead . But we really do enjoy the album. And it's a very live, very spontaneous record. I think that works best for us.."

Later Lemmy said the whole album was not recorded live, but they:

"..did about five tracks all together, so that much is true.."

Release

Bad Magic received generally positive reviews from critics. Chad Bowar of Loudwire wrote that the songs on the album had a timeless sound, meaning that listeners wouldn't know if they were written during the year the album was released or in the early '80s.

Ray Van Horn Jr from Blabbermouth.net, noted that with Bad Magic, given Lemmy's health problems:

".. on the verge of what might be swan song... exhibits the vocal wear and tear of a man whose long-beaten, gravelly pipes are betraying him due to a natural aging process.."

However, he continues that:

"..Lemmy is a freak of nature, and it's great to hear him ralph, croon and snarl with a give-a-damn will to live—you're a total piece of crap if you knock a guy who has given us his all for decades.."

Sean Barry of Consequence of Sound points to the song, "Till the End", and writes that:

"..here the frontman relates his story and woes in some rundown pub on the outskirts of town. It also finds Lemmy coming to terms with who he is, and despite all his flaws, pledging to continue living as he has through the remainder of his life. And while the 70 years of said hell-raising show in the way he slightly slurs his vocals, he’s just as virile and robust as he was on Overkill.."

Barry ends the review writing:

"..'Bad Magic' feels ancestral; you can feel it in your blood and in your bones. Even for those new to Motörhead, the album will have the power to recharge your love for all things rock ‘n’ roll. As a band that’s been around for generations, Motörhead isn’t just hanging around trying to keep themselves relevant. They’re partying until the sun goes out and celebrating their own immortality.."
