'''Privateer''' is a spinoff of the popular Wing Commander series in which the player is no longer a navy pilot, but a freelancer who can choose to be a pirate, a merchant, a mercernary or any of the above in some combination while following the main storyline across multiple star systems. In that Privateer was Grand Theft Auto in space long before there was a Grand Theft Auto.

The major benefit this game had when it came out was its outstanding degree of liberty. You could do just about anything, from big illegal drug transportation to an unfinishable exploration throughout space. In fact, you could just say there wasn't a main story to follow, you just buy a ship and everything that goes with it and live your own adventure. You could be a pirate, merchant, head hunter, police, explorer or all at once if you didn't get caught.

Privateer had a sequel, Privateer 2: The Darkening which was divorced entirely from the Wing Commander story and helmed by Erin Roberts, the brother of the creator of Wing Commander, Chris Roberts, but proved unpopular. After Electronic Arts shut down Origin, Chris Roberts created the game Freelancer which featured similar art and story to Privateer set in a new universe
