The sovereignty over the islands, together with that over the neighbouring island of ] is an object of a long-standing territorial dispute between ] on the one side and the ] (and its predecessors, Arab principalities that were under British domination until 1971) on the other. They have been factually under Iranian control since 1971 and are administered as part of the Iranian province of ].
The size of the Greater Tunb is 10.3 ], and the Lesser Tunb is 2 ].

Greater Tunb has a surface of 10.3 km² and approximately 450 inhabitants. Lesser Tunb has a surface of 2 km² and is uninhabited. There is a red soil mine active on the Greater Tunb Island.

The Greater and Lesser Tunbs, and Abu Musa

The Greater and Lesser Tunbs (Template:PerB, Transliteration:Tunb-e Buzurg & Tunb-e Kuchak", tunb is Persian for "hilly place") are two Iranian islands on the eastern side of the Persian Gulf. Together with the Abu Musa island, they are administered as part of the Iranian province Hormozgan. One of unique characteristics of the Greater Tunb is that its soil is red.

Geography

The size of the Greater Tunb is 10.3 sq km, and the Lesser Tunb is 2 sq km.
