The old city is located on the Strait of ], which separates the ] from the ], and connects the ] to the ].

Named ] during antiquity, it became known as ] when it became the second capital of the ] under ] (330).

Until 1928, the town officially called "]" and "Stamboul" meant only the Old Town (the historical peninsula).
