The department was responsible for policing the largest local government park system in the United States - {{convert|46000|acre|km2}} of parkland.<ref name="website"/> The department covers 14 major parks, four ]s, four ], seven camping facilities, more than 200 historic structures, two equestrian centers, four lifeguard protected ]es with {{convert|15|mi|km}} of ocean front, picnic facilities for 20,000 people, and more than {{convert|600|mi|km}} of ]s.

On October 7, 2014 the remaining full time sworn police officers of the Suffolk County Park Police were absorbed into the Suffolk County Police Department following legislation at the state and local level.

Patrol of the parks in Suffolk County will fall upon security guards and part time peace officers, or Park Rangers. That plan is pending implementation.
