He was famous for changing coats depending on the wind. He had initially supported Isabella's claim to the Castilian throne but had some frictions with her and Ferdinand. Carrillo did not approve of their plans to subordinate the church to Royal Authority. As a result of this opposition, Isabella ascended ], an old enemy of Carrillo, to the position of chancellor of Castille and got him appointed as Cardinal, a position Carrillo had been fighting for. During the ], Carrillo fought on Johanna's side. When the war was won by Isabella he conveniently changed sides and reconciled with her, being appointed the ] as a reward.<ref>Parrilla García C.
