Cumberland continued growing and in 1936 the School Board purchased about seven acres of land on Greenway Avenue, and the construction of Fort Hill was begun. Adjacent to the school an athletic field and stadium were erected.
The first students entered the impressive edifice, flanked by its large auditorium and gymnasium, in September 1936. Through willingness and cooperation, clubs were organized. The student Council machinery was set up and put into active operation. The name "Sentinel" was suggested for the school paper by Mary Davis. The yearbook, "The Saber" - named by Fred Roth - was published in 1937. A few changes have been made at Fort Hill in the past two decades. In 1980, a new gymnasium was built adjacent to the original facility. The building underwent a major renovation in 1991-92 with the addition of a music wing, greenhouse, art rooms, and a telecommunications distance learning lab in 1996. One of the striking features of this renovation is the layout of the courtyard with its multiple features including a playground, patio with picnic tables and added classrooms.
