She began working at KARE-11 in September 2003, and she anchors the 10 p.m. newscast. Before joining KARE-11, Julie anchored the 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. newscasts at KSTP channel 5 (ABC affiliate). Months after arriving at KSTP she was named "Best Newcomer" by Minneapolis-St. Paul magazine. A year later the magazine named her one of the area's "One Hundred People to Watch." In 2000 she won a regional emmy for anchoring.

Nelson grew up in Eau Claire, Wisconsin but later moved to Minnesota. In 1988, Nelson won the Miss Minnesota USA title and represented her state at Miss USA pageant that was nationally televised from El Paso, Texas. Nelson failed to place in the pageant, which was won by Courtney Gibbs of Texas.

Nelson received her bachelor's degrees in journalism and history from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana in 1994. She currently serves on the boards of the Minnesota Teen Challenge and the Indiana University School of Journalism. She is married and has two children.
