On 8 November 2016, the Government of India announced the demonetization of all ₹500 and ₹1,000 banknotes of the Mahatma Gandhi Series. The scarcity of cash due to demonetization led to chaos outside banks and ATM's across India, which became a daily routine for millions of people waiting to withdraw cash for their daily needs.<ref>{{cite web|title=2016 Indian banknote demonetisation|url=https://en.wikipedia.org/2016_Indian_banknote_demonetisation|website=Misplaced Pages|language=en|date=13 November 2017}}</ref> ATM's were running out of cash after a few hours of being functional, and around half the ATM's in the country were non-functional.<ref>{{cite news|title=Demonetisation: Chaos grows, queues get longer at banks, ATMs on weekend|url=http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/demonetisation-chaos-grows-queues-get-longer-at-banks-atms-on-weekend-4371373/|work=The Indian Express|date=12 November 2016}}</ref>
