Immediately prior to their annexation by the Russians, the population of the Yerevan and Nakhichevan khanates included about 25,500 Armenians. Between 1828 and 1836, approximately 57,000 Christians (overwhelmingly Armenians) migrated into the Armenian oblast from Persia and Turkey.
