{{Nihongo|'''Gaara of the Desert'''|我愛羅}} is a ] in the '']'' ] and ] series created by ]. Originally debuting as an ], Gaara is a ] affiliated with Sunagakure and is the son of Sunagakure's leader, the Fourth Kazekage. He was born as a demon's host as part of his father's intention to have a weapon to restore their village. However, a combination of being ] by the Sunagakure villagers, his early inability to control the Tailed Beast, and the notion that his deceased mother called him her ] on the village caused Gaara to become a ruthless killer who believes his own purpose is to kill his enemies. Only after meeting ] does Gaara earn a change of perspective, as he eventually becomes Sunagakure's {{nihongo|Fifth Kazekage|五代目風影|Godaime Kazekage}} and gains acceptance by his people. Gaara has appeared in several pieces of ''Naruto'' media, including two of the featured films in the series, the third original video animation, and several video games.
{{Nihongo|'''Gaara'''|我愛羅}} is a ] in the ] and ] series '']''.

Gaara was created a ] to the series' eponymous character, ], as the two were born through similar circumstances, but develop vastly different personalities due to a troubled upbringing. His designs and name underwent major changes in the making of his final one which also was modified in later arcs to give Gaara a design that is easier to draw. In the Japanese version of the series, Gaara is voiced by ] while ] voices him in the English dub.
He is known as "Gaara of the Sand" in the Viz translation, "Gaara of the Desert" in the English anime, and {{nihongo|"Sabaku no Gaara"|砂瀑の我愛羅||Gaara of the Sand Waterfall}} in the original Japanese (''Sabaku'' 砂瀑 means "sand waterfall", but ''sabaku'' 砂漠 means "desert", thus the more common "Gaara of the Desert").

Numerous anime and manga publications have commented on Gaara's character. Multiple series called Naruto's fight against Gaara the high point of the entire series due to their similarities and Gaara's role in the aftermath as he attempts to redeem himself. Among the Naruto reader base, Gaara has been popular, placing high in several popularity polls and always making it to the top ten characters. Numerous pieces of merchandise have been released in Gaara's likeness, including plush dolls, key chains, and action figures.
In the annual Shonen Jump polls for the most popular character, Gaara consistently ranks in the top ten, usually between seventh and tenth spot.

== Background ==
]
{{spoiler}}
''Naruto'' author Masashi Kishimoto created Gaara as a ] to the series' protagonist, ]. Naruto and he have a similar background: he was rejected by his peers and fellow villagers for being the host of One-Tailed beast, Shukaku, a situation that Kishimoto describes as "very much like Naruto's". Gaara's development from this state into a highly withdrawn, sadistic character was intended to induce sympathy for him from readers, as it was contrasted against Naruto's development into a cheerful troublemaker.<ref>{{cite book|last=Kishimoto|first=Masashi |author-link=Masashi Kishimoto|title=Uzumaki: The Art of Naruto|year=2007|publisher=Viz Media|isbn=978-1-4215-1407-9|page=142}}</ref> Additionally, his design was designed to look like the Tanuki since Kishimoto thought that it would make him a good rival for Naruto's Nine-Tailed Demon Fox since several parts from the Shukaku were considered by Kishimoto to be opposite ones from the Demon Fox.<ref>{{cite book |last=Kishimoto|first=Masashi|title=NARUTO|year=2009 |publisher=Shueisha |page=98 |isbn=978-4-08-874823-8}}</ref>
]
Gaara is the son of the ] and the younger brother of ] and ]. Because of ]'s decreases in funds, Gaara's father ordered ] to seal the ] within Gaara during his birth in the hopes that he would become the ultimate weapon for the village. Because a sacrifice was needed, Gaara's mother, ], was used. Before she died, Karura cursed Sunagakure, hoping Gaara would avenge her death.

Gaara's backstory became one of Kishimoto's favorite stories from ]; Kishimoto had to revise his illustrations in such chapters as he wanted readers to understand more of Gaara's mental state.<ref>{{cite book |last=Kishimoto|first=Masashi|title=NARUTO―ナルト―[秘伝・闘の書]|year=2005 |publisher=Shueisha |pages=310–311 |isbn=978-4-08-873734-8}}</ref> The character was originally going to be called Kotarou Fuuma, but Kishimoto's editor highly refused to give him that name. As a result, he was given the name Gaara why he felt more suitable to the fact he always uses sand. By 2013, Kishimoto stated he still did not understand why such name was discarded. Nevertheless, he refrained from giving him a complete name like Gaara Yuzawa.<ref name="kizuna">{{cite book|title=NARUTO-ナルト-名言集 絆-KIZUNA- 天ノ巻|publisher=]|year=2013|isbn=978-4-08-720681-4|author=Kishimoto, Masashi|pages=188–195}}</ref> Another early name was a younger child named "Kumomaru" but was avoided by Kishimoto. However, after multiple changes, he became Gaara. Due to his importance in the manga as a result of being Naruto's foil, Kishimoto added the kanji for "love" in his head to complement his name (part of Gaara's name can be read as "love").<ref>{{cite book|title=NARUTO―ナルト―キャラクターオフィシャルデータBOOK 秘伝・陣の書|year=2014|publisher=]|author=Kishimoto, Masashi|pages=378–387|isbn=978-4-08-880263-3|language=ja}}</ref>
Gaara was trained by his father, but raised mainly by his uncle, ]. Because of the power of Shukaku, the villagers of Sunagakure hated and feared Gaara, seeing him only for the monster sealed within him. For a time, Yashamaru seemed to be the only person who cared about Gaara. When Gaara would mistakenly harm others due to the subconscious abilities granted to him by Shukaku, Yashamaru would be the only one who understood that Gaara hadn't intended to harm anyone. Gaara's father, however, did not see Gaara in the same light, and viewed Gaara's frequent attacks upon villagers as a result of a failed experiment that was a threat to the village.

Gaara's initial attire, along with the costumes of his siblings, was difficult for Kishimoto to draw on a weekly basis. Because of this, Kishimoto gave the three of them simpler costumes towards the end of Part I; Gaara received an outfit with an upright collar. In addition to being easier to draw, it was used to demonstrate the change in relationship between Gaara and Naruto following their previous fight. Kishimoto cites '']'', one of his favorite movies, as an inspiration for Gaara's new costume, and he considers it to be his favorite costume of the three siblings.<ref name="ArtBook127">{{cite book|last=Kishimoto|first=Masashi|title=Uzumaki: The Art of Naruto|year=2007|publisher=Viz Media|isbn=978-1-4215-1407-9|page=127}}</ref> For Part II, there was a scene where an antagonist Deidara was sitting on Gaara's body. This shot was inspired by '']'', a ] by ] that Kishimoto was a fan of.<ref>{{Cite AV media |title=漫道コバヤシ第13号「NARUTO完結!岸本斉史SP」 |date=December 13, 2014 |language=ja |publisher=] |trans-title=Kobayashi No. 13 'Completion of Naruto! Because of the danger Gaara imposed, his father began sending assassins to kill him, though when all attempts met with failure, the Kazekage asked Yashamaru to kill Gaara. As a result, Yashamaru tried to assassinate Gaara, though Gaara's abilities defeated Yashamaru with ease, saddening Gaara. Although Gaara tried to dismiss Yashamaru's attack as an order of the Kazekage, Yashamaru corrected him by saying that he had willingly accepted the mission. Having never truly loved Gaara, Yashamaru hoped that killing Gaara would avenge the death of his sister, who had named Gaara after the phrase {{nihongo|"a self-loving carnage"|'''我'''を'''愛'''する修'''羅'''|Ware wo ai suru shura}}, a sign of her hate for Gaara. In a last ditch effort to kill Gaara, Yashamaru detonated a number of explosive tags covering his body, asking Gaara to, "Please die." Gaara survives the blast and loses the only person he thought had cared for him.

In the Japanese version of ''Naruto''{{'}}s animated versions ] voices Gaara. ] takes his place for the English dub. The Western actor, before being selected to voice Gaara, had already heard about the series' popularity. O'Brien went for an early audition in ] with hopes of doing Gaara's voice but failed it. However, O'Brien later went through another audition and got Gaara's role.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.mcmbuzz.com/blog/2012/10/27/interview-with-liam-obrien-voice-of-gaara-juushiro-ukitake-war-asura-and-more/|title=Interview with Liam O'Brien: Voice of Gaara, Juushiro Ukitake, War, Asura and more|publisher=Mcmbuzz|date=October 27, 2012|access-date=February 7, 2018|archive-date=March 13, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190313053843/http://www.mcmbuzz.com/blog/2012/10/27/interview-with-liam-obrien-voice-of-gaara-juushiro-ukitake-war-asura-and-more/|url-status=dead}}</ref>
While Gaara had initially tried to be friendly towards others despite their fear of him, Yashamaru's actions and words changed Gaara. Realizing that nobody loved him, Gaara used his sand to create the ] on his forehead (愛, "Love") as a symbol of a "demon loving only himself". Gaara became emotionally withdrawn, all but silent, and consumed with a bitter loathing for everyone but himself. He learned to find pleasure and eventually a reason to live in annihilating the numerous assassins sent to kill him – and by extension, anyone who threatened his existence. Gaara's ], forced upon him by the fear that the demon inside him would eat away at his personality if he were to fall asleep, only furthered his instability and desire to kill. In time, Gaara's father would come to appreciate Gaara and the uses he could serve, and canceled all assassination orders in the hopes that Gaara would become an effective tool.

==Appearances==
Gaara's childhood was somewhat similar to ]'s, albeit more unfortunate due to his lack of anyone to call a friend. Both were lonely and desired to be liked, loved, and acknowledged as an individual, free of others' prejudices — they are themselves, not the demons they were forced to "contain" — and both were driven into a desperate state. While Naruto consequently developed the misconception that pranks and mischief would bring him the attention he sought, Gaara came to the conclusion that he could preserve and confirm his own existence by killing any and all who challenged it, securing an extreme form of ] as his key personality trait. In the absence of others' acknowledgment, he could compensate by valuing only himself to the exclusion of everyone else. Furthermore, while Naruto eventually had ] and Team 7 to acknowledge him, Gaara never had anyone to bond with and did not understand the concept of fighting for anything other than himself until his confrontation with Naruto.

=== Gaara and Shukaku ===
]
As the host of Shukaku, Gaara has the ability to manipulate sand at will. Gaara always carries a gourd on his back filled with an abundant amount of chakra-enhanced sand that has been soaked in the blood of those he has killed. Although Gaara can control any sand, and can even make sand himself by using his sand to break apart minerals in the ground, his personal sand is much easier to control because it is pretreated with his chakra. Other sand puts a greater strain on him since he has to use more chakra to animate it. With his personal sand, not only does Gaara always have his own sand supply, but his attacks also increase in both speed and power. Gaara cannot, however, manipulate sand which has come in contact with water.

In Part II of the series, three years after his mission, ], a member of the criminal organization ], is sent to Sunagakure to capture Gaara. Gaara fights Deidara to protect the village, but is defeated. During battle, Gaara rarely moves, usually guarding and attacking with his sand from a single location and rarely using ]. While fighting, Gaara often uses a combination of ] followed by ] to capture and subsequently kill his opponents. Gaara can also increase the scale of this combo by using his ] followed by ], which could effectively kill an entire army. Although his abilities are mostly used for simple offense and defense, they can also be used for a variety of purposes, including ] and ].

===In other media===
Gaara's main defense is his ], which protects him from all harm, but can still be defeated with enough speed and strength. If his Shield of Sand fails, Gaara still has his ], a layer of highly compacted sand that is wrapped around Gaara's body. Although it gives Gaara an almost ultimate defense, it takes a large toll on Gaara's chakra and his stamina. Instead of using this, Gaara can create a nearly impenetrable sphere of sand for an alternative absolute defense, providing a stronger defense that uses less chakra, but confines Gaara to the location of the sphere. This sphere can grow spikes to impale anyone who approaches.

In desperate situations, Gaara can actually take on the form of Shukaku, making him many times more powerful than he already is. He does this by layering sand on his body to take the shape of Shukaku. Because the process takes quite a while, Gaara typically hides within his sphere of sand so that he won't be interrupted. Shukaku's personality grows more dominant during this transformation, making Gaara even more homicidal than normal. Once finished, Gaara assumes a human-sized version of Shukaku's form, which allows him to switch from his normally long-range battle style to physical attacks augmented by the sand covering him. Gaara primarily relies on his brute strength to destroy everything around him, though he can use a few long range attacks that are basically sand imitations of ordinary weapons, such as shuriken. This form also allows Gaara to use a few wind-based attacks.

Gaara also appears in ]s from the series. He makes a cameo in ''Kakashi's Story'' alongside the other Kage.<ref>{{cite book|title=Naruto: Kakashi's Story — Lightning in the Frozen Sky|isbn=978-1-42-158440-9|year=2015|author=Kishimoto, Masashi|publisher=VIZ Media LLC }}</ref> In ''Shikamaru Hiden'' he joins his sister Temari and Naruto in the search for the missing ] whom Gaara values due to his close relationship with Temari.<ref name="Kishimoto, Masashi 2016">{{cite book|title=Naruto: Sakura's Story — Love Riding the Spring Breeze|isbn=978-1-42-158442-3|year=2016|author=Kishimoto, Masashi|publisher=VIZ Media LLC }}</ref> In ''Sakura's Hiden'', Gaara assists the Konohagakure ninja upon their news that a man resembling Sasuke Uchiha is planning to attack the village.<ref name="Kishimoto, Masashi 2016"/> In ''Konoha Hiden'', Gaara visits Konohagakure to see the wedding of Naruto and ].<ref>{{cite book|title=Konoha Hiden: The Perfect Day for a Wedding|isbn=978-4-08-703360-1|year=2015|author=Kishimoto, Masashi|publisher=Shueisha}}</ref> He also appears as the protagonist of ''Gaara Hiden'' which follows his works as the Fifth Kazekage while dealing with his sister's wedding with Shikamaru.<ref>{{cite book|title=Gaara Hiden: A Sandstorm Mirage|isbn=978-4-08-703364-9|year=2015|author=Kishimoto, Masashi|publisher=Shueisha}}</ref>
Gaara can also create a life-sized version of Shukaku if his human-sized form doesn't work. He remains buried inside the Shukaku copy, safe from harm but also unable to move. Strangely, this version of Shukaku can be created almost instantly, despite being several times larger than its smaller counterpart. While in this form, Gaara can unleash the spirit of Shukaku through his ], allowing the copy to operate at its full potential. To do so, however, Gaara must emerge from within the copy, leaving him open to attack for the duration of the jutsu. Shukaku's sand body with its spirit dominant is shown to be extremely powerful, and it took the combined effort of ] and Naruto to get close to Shukaku and wake Gaara, thus suppressing Shukaku's spirit once more.

Gaara and his siblings later appear as allies after the ] asks them to assist the team sent to retrieve Sasuke Uchiha. Gaara arrives in time to rescue Rock Lee from ], taking over the battle due to Lee's injuries. Gaara's arrival also marks a glimpse of his new personality, as his facial expression reveals a concern for Rock Lee's well-being; the main reason being that the wounds inflicted upon Lee by Gaara have yet to heal. He repeatedly stops Lee from continuing the fight, insisting that he'll handle it alone. When questioned by Lee about his motivation for assisting Konoha, Gaara remarks that he owes a big debt to Konoha, in reference to Naruto changing his outlook on life.

Gaara demonstrates an increased array of abilities that he had developed since the Chunin Exam. The first is ], a cloud of sand in the sky that rains down on his target, which he uses in combination with foot-binding sand to trap the agile Kimimaro for his Desert Funeral. Gaara also demonstrates his Quicksand in the Style of a Waterfall, a giant forty-foot-tall wave of sand, which he uses shortly after Kimimaro escapes the first Desert Funeral. Having flooded the entire area with sand, Gaara attempts to finish his opponent with Desert Imperial Funeral, compressing the massive amount of sand with a great deal of force. Gaara also uses his ] to create a giant, toy-like replica of Shukaku capable of breaking even Kimimaro's enhanced bones.

Although Gaara holds his ground against Kimimaro for a while, Kimimaro's ] and cursed seal allow him to survive every one of Gaara's attacks, leaving Gaara exhausted. He almost kills Gaara with his ], but Kimimaro dies from his terminal disease before he can finish the attack. Gaara notes that he would have been killed if Kimimaro had been healthy, and comments on Kimimaro's dedication to Orochimaru afterwards, saying that nobody can overcome loneliness on their own, no matter how strong they are.

== Anime filler arcs ==
Gaara is seen briefly at the beginning of the Mizuki Strikes Back arc leaving Konohagakure with Temari and Kankuro, the three having spent a short time teaching at Konoha's Ninja Academy due to staffing issues. Shikamaru, along with Konohamaru's academy class, wish the Sunagakure ninja a safe journey home.

He is seen again during the Shiitenshounin arc, where he is assigned a role in a Ninja Training program in Sunagakure. However, due to his status as Sunagakure's ultimate weapon, Gaara is feared and the students are reluctant to train under his tutelage. One girl, ], decides to train under Gaara. Fearful of the majority of the weapons that can be trained with, Gaara suggests that Matsuri train with a ]. Matsuri is later kidnapped by a group of four ninja calling themselves Shiitenshounin, who threaten to kidnap someone close to Gaara each day until he responds to them. Gaara and his siblings are sent to deal with the Shiitenshounin by the Sunagakure council, who also send a request for aid to Konohagakure. Gaara takes Matsuri's rope dart with him, since she dropped it during her kidnapping

With his siblings both facing Shiitenshounin members themselves, Gaara is stopped by Suiko, a Shiitenshounin member who wears chakra-absorbing armor. After Suiko maneuvers Gaara into a specific location, the Shiitenshounin initiate a water-based technique which infuses Gaara's sand with water, making it much heavier and sticking it together. Without his automatic defense and with his chakra drained, Gaara lies helpless as Suiko attacks. He is saved by the arrival of aid from Konohagakure, as Rock Lee appears and deflects the attack. Lee and Naruto, who had been sent to aid Gaara, hold off Suiko while ] attempts to heal him. However, in the end Gaara deals the final blow to Suiko, forming a javelin from the sand he normally covers his body with and piercing Suiko's chest with it. Gaara then rushes to catch up with the final Shiitenshounin member, Jin, who holds the captive Matsuri.

After Gaara catches up to Jin, Jin uses his sword to absorb the weapons of his companions, making him much more powerful. He also drops the captured Matsuri. Still drained from the previous water attack, Gaara is barely able to hold his own. Naruto, who shows up a bit later and releases Matsuri, is similarly outmatched. After maneuvering Gaara into a specific location, Jin triggers a trap that seals Gaara in a chakra-absorbing dome. Gaara is able to toss the rope dart to Matsuri before being captured. Using the dome, Jin is able to perform an elaborate ritual to resurrect the former leader of his village, Seimei, sacrificing his own life to do so. The ritual awakens Shukaku's dormant personality, causing Gaara to begin transforming. Outside the dome, Seimei absorbs Jin's weapons as Jin did before, turning them into an elaborate construct that allows him to fly. Gaara eventually bursts from his cage during Naruto's battle with Seimei, half-transformed into Shukaku. Gaara, however, resists the transformation, causing it to recede.

Having forced Shukaku back inside himself, Gaara claims that he will beat Seimei with his own strength. Seimei is skeptical, but Gaara, having made preparations earlier, is able to create sand from the surrounding cliffs, burying Seimei. Seimei survives and tries to drain the rest of Gaara's chakra, which Gaara responds to by forming a Shukaku-like spear in his right hand. He tosses it at Seimei, easily destroying his armor construct. He then kills Seimei in typical fashion, crushing him with the surrounding sand.

In the aftermath, Gaara is taken back to Konoha and healed, and departs once more for Sunakagure. Shikamaru sees them off as he did previously.

== Naruto the Movie 2 ==
In an appearance sometime before the timeskip, Gaara helps defend Sunagakure from an onslaught of mysterious knights, killing many of them with his sand until a ship launches projectiles at the location and forces them to retreat. During his entrance, his elder brother, Kankuro, even made a friendly comment about him being late. This shows a change in his character, as he no longer thinks for only himself and defended his own village. The ninjas of the Sand also treated him with respect, answering his orders without fear and taking it naturally. His brother is also closer to him, enough so that he would be brave enough to make such a joke.

Later, in one of the wrecks of the invading ships, he fights ], one of Haido's henchmen that utilized electricity to fight. She was forced to transform into a Frankenstein's monster-like state, allowing her to take the upper hand by becoming virtually immune to the crushing force of Gaara's sand. He eventually neutralizes her electricity with ], and then kills her with Desert Imperial Funeral. He later helps save some children from ] fortress, who were behind the near invincible knights, and he is last seen looking out into the horizon.

== Part II ==
]
Gaara's character has changed quite a bit thanks to Naruto's influence. To his credit, he no longer acts hostile when in the presence of others. He is friendly towards his siblings, and he values other people's lives over his own. Gaara has become much more open, and he is willing to talk to others, especially his brother Kankuro, about his problems and dreams. Having become the {{nihongo|Fifth Kazekage|五代目風影|Godaime Kazekage}}, Gaara begins risking his life to protect the village. He also seems to have many admirers now, especially among the younger females of the village. Though Gaara is only shown battling for a short period, his skills have clearly improved. He was able to create numerous Shukaku arms to attack ] while retaining control of himself, as well as levitate a massive amount of sand to block one of Deidara's clay bombs.

=== Rescue Gaara arc ===
Gaara is targeted by ], who seek the demon within him. Though Gaara is able to fend off one of their agents, Deidara, rather effectively (actually crushing one of Deidara's arms during the battle), Deidara manages to capture Gaara by launching a high-powered clay bomb to destroy the village. Gaara is able to protect his village, but at the expense of much of his chakra, leaving him severely weakened. This allows Deidara to mix a clay bomb with Gaara's sand without the latter noticing, knocking Gaara unconscious once it goes off and allowing Gaara to easily be taken to the Akatsuki hideout.

Although Team 7 does their best to save Gaara, they do not arrive in time to stop Akatsuki's extraction of Shukaku, resulting in Gaara's death. However, ] resurrects Gaara with her life-restoring technique in the hopes that it will make up for her sealing of the Shukaku into Gaara years earlier, bringing Gaara back to life at the cost of her own. Gaara is awoken by Naruto, and as he wakes he realizes that he is surrounded by people concerned for him. This is the first time Gaara truly feels loved and not so alone. He also shows his first true smile since he was a child, rather than the bloodthirsty grin he often gives.

Before Naruto goes back home, he tries to say goodbye, but admits that it's not something he's good at. Gaara uses some sand to encourage and guide Naruto's hand, and the two shake hands, symbolizing Gaara and Naruto's friendship and Gaara's new characteristics. Additionally, while the precise effect on Gaara from the Shukaku's loss is still unknown, this scene shows that he has retained the ability to control sand.

Gaara of the Desert (我愛羅) is a character in the Naruto manga and anime series created by Masashi Kishimoto. Originally debuting as an antagonist, Gaara is a shinobi affiliated with Sunagakure and is the son of Sunagakure's leader, the Fourth Kazekage. He was born as a demon's host as part of his father's intention to have a weapon to restore their village. However, a combination of being ostracized by the Sunagakure villagers, his early inability to control the Tailed Beast, and the notion that his deceased mother called him her curse on the village caused Gaara to become a ruthless killer who believes his own purpose is to kill his enemies. Only after meeting Naruto Uzumaki does Gaara earn a change of perspective, as he eventually becomes Sunagakure's Fifth Kazekage (五代目風影, Godaime Kazekage) and gains acceptance by his people. Gaara has appeared in several pieces of Naruto media, including two of the featured films in the series, the third original video animation, and several video games.

Gaara was created a foil to the series' eponymous character, Naruto Uzumaki, as the two were born through similar circumstances, but develop vastly different personalities due to a troubled upbringing. His designs and name underwent major changes in the making of his final one which also was modified in later arcs to give Gaara a design that is easier to draw. In the Japanese version of the series, Gaara is voiced by Akira Ishida while Liam O'Brien voices him in the English dub.

Creation and conception

Early designs for Gaara when he was known as Kumomaru.

Naruto author Masashi Kishimoto created Gaara as a foil to the series' protagonist, Naruto Uzumaki. Naruto and he have a similar background: he was rejected by his peers and fellow villagers for being the host of One-Tailed beast, Shukaku, a situation that Kishimoto describes as "very much like Naruto's". Gaara's development from this state into a highly withdrawn, sadistic character was intended to induce sympathy for him from readers, as it was contrasted against Naruto's development into a cheerful troublemaker. Additionally, his design was designed to look like the Tanuki since Kishimoto thought that it would make him a good rival for Naruto's Nine-Tailed Demon Fox since several parts from the Shukaku were considered by Kishimoto to be opposite ones from the Demon Fox.

Gaara's backstory became one of Kishimoto's favorite stories from Part I; Kishimoto had to revise his illustrations in such chapters as he wanted readers to understand more of Gaara's mental state. The character was originally going to be called Kotarou Fuuma, but Kishimoto's editor highly refused to give him that name. As a result, he was given the name Gaara why he felt more suitable to the fact he always uses sand. By 2013, Kishimoto stated he still did not understand why such name was discarded. Nevertheless, he refrained from giving him a complete name like Gaara Yuzawa. Another early name was a younger child named "Kumomaru" but was avoided by Kishimoto. However, after multiple changes, he became Gaara. Due to his importance in the manga as a result of being Naruto's foil, Kishimoto added the kanji for "love" in his head to complement his name (part of Gaara's name can be read as "love").

Kishimoto cites The Matrix, one of his favorite movies, as an inspiration for Gaara's new costume, and he considers it to be his favorite costume of the three siblings. For Part II, there was a scene where an antagonist Deidara was sitting on Gaara's body. This shot was inspired by Akira, a manga by Katsuhiro Otomo that Kishimoto was a fan of.

In the Japanese version of Naruto's animated versions Akira Ishida voices Gaara. Liam O'Brien takes his place for the English dub. The Western actor, before being selected to voice Gaara, had already heard about the series' popularity. O'Brien went for an early audition in Los Angeles with hopes of doing Gaara's voice but failed it. However, O'Brien later went through another audition and got Gaara's role.

Appearances

In Naruto

Before he was born, Gaara's father, the 4th Kazekage Rasa, had Chiyo make Gaara into the Jinchuriki for the tailed beast Shukaku the One Tail (一尾の守鶴, Ichibi no Shukaku, English TV: "Shukaku the Sand Spirit") while he was still in his mother's womb before she died giving birth to him. Though believed at the time to be Shukaku's power in action, Gaara can manipulate sand, which subconsciously protects him. Rasa intended to use Gaara as the village's personal weapon, but Shukaku's bloodlust proved too much for Gaara as he suffered night terrors brought about by the tailed beast's influence. With Gaara's sand adding to his inability to control Shukaku, the boy became feared to the point his father decided to have him assassinated. Gaara had the belief that he could only rely upon himself and Shukaku, after Yashamaru, the only person who he thought loved him, tried to kill him, on the order of his father; he felt he had to kill others to confirm the value of his own existence. He thus became narcissistic, even permanently scarring his left temple with the kanji for "love" (愛, ai) for his new drive.

Gaara first appears in the series when he is sent to Konohagakure, an allied ninja village, to take part in the Chunin Exams alongside his older siblings Kankuro and Temari. In truth, he is sent in order to infiltrate Konohagakure in preparation for an invasion by Sunagakure and its ally, Otogakure. There, he and Kankuro and Temari easily pass both the first and second phases. In the third phase, Gaara is set to fight against Rock Lee. Lee is able to pass Gaara's defenses, who, enraged, breaks Lee's arm and leg, claiming victory. Sasuke Uchiha gives Gaara the first injury he has ever received, causing Gaara to suffer a mental breakdown and nearly manifest his Tailed-Beast powers. This begins the invasion, with his older siblings carrying him off. Both Sasuke and Naruto Uzumaki confront him, with the latter defeating him. Later, Sunagakure sends Gaara to help prevent Sasuke from defecting to Otogakure, which had become an enemy of Sunagakure once it was revealed that Orochimaru had murdered Rasa prior to the attack. While he helps Lee fight Orochimaru's servant Kimimaro, Gaara is unable to prevent Sasuke from leaving Konoha. He makes amends with the many characters he had alienated, apologizing to those he hurt and improving his relationship with his family. At the same time, Gaara's fundamental characteristic becomes the desire to protect as many people as he can, as in doing so he believes, like Naruto, he will be able to find true strength. This culminates in his replacing his father as the Fifth Kazekage during Part II of the series.

In Part II of the series, three years after his mission, Deidara, a member of the criminal organization Akatsuki, is sent to Sunagakure to capture Gaara. Gaara fights Deidara to protect the village, but is defeated. The members of the Akatsuki then kidnap him and extract Shukaku from his body. Gaara dies in the process but an elder from the village named Chiyo sacrifices her own life to revive him. Sometime later, he attends the Five Kage Summit, and the Akatsuki's leader, Tobi, breaks into the meeting and announces the Fourth Great Ninja War, to capture the last two Tailed-Beasts. Gaara later joins the new Shinobi Alliance as its field commander to protect Naruto and Killer Bee, using Naruto's philosophy of love against the Akatsuki's philosophy of hatred to unite the army, which had nearly imploded from internal strife. On the second day of the war, Gaara encounters his reanimated father. Rasa reveals the truth to Gaara: that Yashamaru's final action was his doing, and that Gaara's mother always loved him, and Gaara is moved to tears after learning his mother's will is the force behind his sand. Rasa recognizes his son has surpassed him and entrusts Sunagakure to him after being defeated. Gaara later defeats and seals the revived Second Mizukage, and joins the other Kage to fight Madara Uchiha, who was reanimated by Kabuto, nearly getting killed as a result. Later healed by Tsunade, Gaara moves to assist in the battle against the Ten-Tails. Before Shukaku is absorbed by the Gedo Statue again, Gaara makes his peace with the tailed beast, thanking it for ensuring that he would meet Naruto. Gaara helps rescue Naruto and briefly holds off Madara before Naruto is successfully revived. Once the Infinite Tsukiyomi is activated, Gaara is caught in the illusion before being freed by Naruto and Sasuke. By the series epilogue, having the Hidden Leaf Village's Nara Clan as in-laws through Temari, Gaara remains active as the Kazekage.

In other media

Gaara has made several appearances outside of the Naruto anime and manga. He is present in the second and sixth Naruto feature films, Naruto the Movie 2: Legend of the Stone of Gelel and Naruto Shippuden the Movie: The Will of Fire. In the former, he protects the Land of Wind from an assault by Haido, the antagonist of the film, and later battles the lightning user Ranke, one of Haido's subordinates, and defeats her, while in the latter, he temporarily becomes enemies of Konohagakure as they are the prime suspect of a pitfall attack on him while he is about to attend a meeting with Tsunade, in reality being done by a missing nin, Hiruko, and briefly battles Naruto, although after the confusion is cleared, he allies himself with them again. Gaara is also present in the third original video animation released in the series, in which he participates in a tournament of various characters from across the series. In Boruto: Naruto the Movie, Gaara has adopted a child named Shinki. Gaara and the other Kage attend the Chunin exam in Konoha before they engage in combat against Momoshiki and Kinshiki in a rescue mission led by Sasuke after Naruto was kidnapped. This role is retitled in the Naruto manga sequel, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.

Naruto video games commonly feature Gaara, including the Clash of Ninja and Ultimate Ninja series. In some games, he uses his Shukaku form for combat, as well as other moves not seen in the anime or manga. Naruto Shippūden: Gekitou Ninja Taisen EX marks the first appearance of Gaara in his Part II appearance in a video game.

Gaara also appears in light novels from the series. He makes a cameo in Kakashi's Story alongside the other Kage. In Shikamaru Hiden he joins his sister Temari and Naruto in the search for the missing Shikamaru Nara whom Gaara values due to his close relationship with Temari. In Sakura's Hiden, Gaara assists the Konohagakure ninja upon their news that a man resembling Sasuke Uchiha is planning to attack the village. In Konoha Hiden, Gaara visits Konohagakure to see the wedding of Naruto and Hinata Hyuga. He also appears as the protagonist of Gaara Hiden which follows his works as the Fifth Kazekage while dealing with his sister's wedding with Shikamaru.

Reception

Akira Ishida (left) and Liam O'Brien (right) were praised for voicing Gaara in Japanese and English, respectively

Gaara has ranked highly in the popularity polls for the series, continuously placing in the top ten. The last such poll was in 2011, in which Gaara was in 4th place. Several pieces of Gaara merchandise have been released; including key chains, plush dolls and action figures of his Part I and Part II appearance. AnimeCentral listed him as eighth best villain in anime with comments focused on how flashbacks made him a tragic character and at the same time similar to Naruto Uzumaki. Additionally, his fight against Rock Lee was listed as the second best one in anime for exchanges in moves and its conclusion. In 2014, IGN listed him as the third best Naruto character when the series ended. My Hero Academia author Kōhei Horikoshi regarded Gaara as his favorite Naruto character in the Chuunin Exams for his portrayal as the author claimed that most high school students enjoyed his strength.

Anime and manga publications have mostly praised Gaara's character. IGN noted that Gaara was an "anti-Naruto", possessing a "dark, solemn character" as opposed to Naruto's continuous cheer and excitement. In another review, IGN also called Gaara's background "emotional" and "a tad creepy" due to the disparity between the development of Naruto's and Gaara's personalities. Anime News Network celebrated the "depth and emotion" that Naruto's and Gaara's similarities added to the plot, and commented that "nowhere in the entire series run does Naruto shine brighter than in the peak period of his battle against Gaara". They also complimented Kishimoto's visual presentation of Gaara in the manga, referring to "chilling of Gaara's crazed, exposed face". Mania Entertainment noted that Gaara and Sasuke's first fight shows how the former has a "fragile" psyche despite his violent attitude. His backstory was also praised by Mania Entertainment since it includes "a ton of legitimate emotion" allowing viewers from the series to understand more Gaara's personality. DVD Talk writer Todd Douglass Jr. enjoyed the similarities between Gaara and Naruto as well as the former's state after being defeated by the latter. His return to aid the Konohagakure ninjas to fight has been praised by Holly Ellingwood from Active Anime who was mostly focused on Gaara's change of hearts. Liam O'Brien, Gaara's voice actor in the English dubbed version of the anime, has been praised. IGN noted that he did an "excellent job" of making Gaara sound terrifying to the viewer, and Anime News Network noted him as one of the best voice actors in the series. Akira Ishida was also noted to be one of the most famous actors from Naruto due to his experience in the 1990s before the anime's release as well as the several characterizations he gave to Gaara.

Gaara's promotion to leader from Sunagakure in Part II of the series was deemed as the most surprising development in the series by Briana Lawrence from Mania Entertainment. UK Anime Network's Kevin Leathers stated that while in the first part of the series, Gaara was a fearsome villain, in the following one he became "much more three-dimensional." Similarly, Douglass Jr. praised Gaara's development in later episodes from Naruto: Shippuden owing to his relationship's expansion with Naruto. His fight against Deidara has also received positive response, with critics praising the revisit of Gaara's popular moves and the strategy both fighters employed. On the other hand, Jason Thompson from Anime News Network noted that, while Gaara had developed ever since his introduction in Part I, it felt wrong that Gaara was accepted as the new Kazekage due to his previous wishes to kill people. During the last episodes of Part II's adaptation, Amy McNulty, also from Anime News Network, enjoyed how Gaara was handled as a comic relief alongside other recurring character. Nevertheless, she found important how Gaara now thought of Naruto as a friend rather than as a hero in contrast to the early story arcs of Part II.
