I do not know how to correct it. I just wanted to tell someone that the Burmese characters are not showing up. Just empty boxes. I think Burmese is in the Unicode font system, and there must be a way to code it to show properly to ALL browsers. |

On February 1, 2021, military rule was seized again, returning the power to an authoritarian system and reversing the transition to democracy that Myanmar had seen since 2010. The country can be classified as either a closed autocracy or an electoral autocracy depending on the elections that the military is planning to hold in 2024. The military establishment plans to hold elections as a way to transition the country out of post-coup conflict and to consolidate their political dominance. However, the junta has enacted laws in preparation for these elections that restrict the voting power of the citizens. These laws include: requiring voting political parties to register at least 100,000 members within three months of registration and banning parties that are declared “terrorist,” by the military, which represents any of their opponents. |
Additionally, the military rule has extended to local levels. Officials in central-level departments and local administrations were replaced with bureaucrats appointed by the military. Additionally, officials of villages and wards, which were previously elected by citizens, are now chosen by military-appointed township councils. |

The Freedom House rating for democracy scores Myanmar at 9/60 in 2022, with a score of 0/40 for political rights and 9/60 for civil liberties. The lead section currently has four paragraphs, none of which are short. However, approximately one-third to one-half of the material in those four paragraphs is detailed explanations of relatively distant history. |

== Rohingya genocide == |

I propose to modify the lead section in the following way: |
I noticed that the history section largely jumps from 2016 to 2020 without mentioning the Rohingya persecution in 2017, which seems a notable event that got a lot of international attention, at a minimum resulted in mass migration, etc. Is there a reason it wouldn't be appropriate to mention here? -] (]) 08:32, 28 October 2024 (UTC) |
1. Keep the current first paragraph as is. |
2. Move the current fourth paragraph to be directly after the first one. |
3. Transfer the current second paragraph, along with approximately the first half of the current third paragraph, into the History section. |
4. ... which leaves the second half of the current third paragraph as the ending of the lead section. |
It's not ideal, but I think it would be an improvement. In my opinion, the current amount of detail about old history doesn't belong in the lead section. ] (]) 15:26, 10 August 2023 (UTC) |
:The history is certainly excessive and should be collapsed into one shorter paragraph, and the lead in general is a bit lengthy. Generally history is the second paragraph, and the last paragraph contains the details on the foreign relations. Perhaps the fourth paragraph can be split rather than being completely shifted. ] (]) 01:53, 11 August 2023 (UTC) |

:Given the international attention, demographic changes to the country, refugee crisis, etc., I am not sure it doesn't belong in "history" too. |
:However, even within the aforementioned section, the "2013 onwards" seems to have minimal commentary on the 2016-2017 period. At the beginning of the genocide allegations section, there is a "see also" link to "2016–17 Rohingya persecution in Myanmar" (which is not the current name of the linked article - I'd think we should link to the current name regardless rather than engaging in a separate debate) but those events aren't really mentioned much in the "2013 onwards" section of this article. |
:I think there could be some improvement here. -] (]) 08:46, 28 October 2024 (UTC) |
::@] I fully agree with everything said here. The genocide of the Rohingya is far too notable and significant to be confined to only one small section of this article. I also noticed that the topic of Rohingya refugees is mentioned in Demographics> Ethnic groups, but it had no word of refugees past 1991. To rectify this, I added this sentence: "Since August 2017, an estimated 23,000-43,700 Rohingya have been killed in the ongoing ], and another 730,000 have fled to Bangladesh.", with three added sources. (Hopefully it doesn't get reverted by some genocide denier, ugh.) Regarding your concern about the "see also" link, it appears as though someone thankfully changed it to "Rohingya genocide" to match the page title (unless you're the one who did that, in which case nice!!) Thank you for pointing all this out, by the way - it's really important stuff. ] (]) 11:39, 30 October 2024 (UTC) |
