CS1 error on Bibliography of the slave trade in the United States

Hello, I'm Qwerfjkl (bot). I have automatically detected that this edit performed by you, on the page Bibliography of the slave trade in the United States, may have introduced referencing errors. They are as follows:

  • A "bare URL and missing title" error. References show this error when they do not have a title. Please edit the article to add the appropriate title parameter to the reference. (Fix | Ask for help)

Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, Qwerfjkl (bot) (talk) 08:24, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

Collapsing cites

As you just did on List of publications of William Garrison and Isaac Knapp. I put them that way for a reason (easier to skim through), and would appreciate if you left them that way. Thanks. deisenbe (talk) 02:36, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

@Deisenbe I have no idea what I broke but I just reverted myself. Apologies! Not trying to damage anything was just thinking Lyman could be an author link. Carry on w your good work! jengod (talk) 02:45, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

Louisville Barnstar for you!

The Louisville Barnstar
For your creation of and excellent work in Louisville Hotel and United States Post Office, Court House, and Custom House (Louisville, Kentucky, 1893), the latter of which was on the Requests list for WikiProject Louisville. Thank you! I think you'll do well around these parts. :) (our start dates are like a year apart) Stefen Towers among the rest! 04:06, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for being so supportive and welcoming @StefenTower and I'm v glad to hear that my soft spot for demolished buildings was of use to WP Louisville. Best, jengod (talk) 04:16, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
I hear you. I might have supported keeping them around, but they were torn down decades before I was born. I'm delighted at any rate that we have even more of Louisville's rich history covered. Cheers! Stefen Towers among the rest! 04:30, 19 January 2024 (UTC)

Big Doughnuts

Awesome work on the big doughnuts article, you should add it to WP:DYK if you get a chance. BuySomeApples (talk) 23:00, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for the thanks!

I am so impressed with your productivity as a SAHM of four! All this just in the month of January! I loved your Big Donuts article. As a native Californian and retired now, I remember seeing a lot of the fun roadside stands driving through California on vacation. A few months ago I checked out some library books on the wonderful, crazy vernacular architecture in Southern California in the early 20th century. A fun read! MauraWen (talk) 21:48, 21 January 2024 (UTC)

High five @MauraWen! (btw I also love your eaves-drip burial article.) Stay cool! jengod (talk) 22:08, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
I have a question for you. I write a lot about British prehistoric and medieval history, women, art, etc. stuff that I am interested in. I really should start focusing on the U.S. I like U.S. history too, but I have a hard time coming up with article ideas. I created the Ernest Hemingway birthplace article, because I now live in Oak Park, near his birthplace. Any recommendations for how I can research interesting American history and architecture ideas? I am planning to read many of your article in the near future--they look really interesting to me!
Maura MauraWen (talk) 22:30, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
Sorry to butt in here, but a great place to look for articles to create is in WikiProjects. A lot of them have request lists. The one I heavily maintain even has a History section. Hope this helps! Stefen Towers among the rest! 22:33, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
Also check out Category:Misplaced Pages requested articles - the fire hose of requests. :). Stefen Towers among the rest! 22:41, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
LOL what @StefenTower said! also @MauraWen My U.S. articles are just things in my area *or* stuff that I encountered in my reading, which I was probably doing in a rage blackout about Injustice Why?! There used to be a thing we called a Decamanus tree after a user who only wrote articles redlinked from a previous article he wrote. I kinda still do that albeit as not as strictly. Like Martin P. Kennard was mentioned in a source I was reading about William I. Bowditch, which came from finding a mention of Elihu Creswell in a book he wrote, and I was researching him bc I have a preexisting interest in doing slave trader bios and I found an intriguing mention of him while reading old newspapers looking for Louisville Hotel stuff, which I was doing because I had a redlink on Andrew Johnson's drunk vice-presidential inaugural address, which was a spin-off of Andrew Johnson alcoholism debate, which was a long-term result of writing William Andrew Johnson and Dolly Johnson which were created as a consequence of the Rich Man making me mad. All of which is to say:
  • Don't worry about the "shoulds" -- you are already crushing it
  • Write what you know! Whatever's in your town or your background is probably a great place to start.
{{hug}} jengod (talk) 23:10, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
@StefenTower Please butt in! Great ideas! When I first started volunteering back in 2017, I was working on Wikiproject Women articles, specializing in archeologists. The archaeological work that those amazing women were doing turned out to be the beginning of a new interest in archaeology for me. Creating new articles lead to new interests. I plan to take a look at a few Wikiprojects and the Misplaced Pages requested articles in the next few weeks. Thanks again! MauraWen (talk) 23:46, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
Sounds good. I have definitely cultivated new interests from just editing articles, even just from fixing typos. Also, this discussion has got me thinking, that we could use a list of US history article request lists somewhere. That would be great for all the American Wikipedians who are history buffs. DYK for Louisville Hotel

Hi again, have you considered doing a WP:DYK for Louisville Hotel? One hook could be that it survived both a major fire and a notable tornado but ultimately succumbed to economic pressures. Another hook could be the connection to Andrew Johnson. Stefen Towers among the rest! 21:10, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

@StefenTower thank you for the very flattering suggestion but I'm not doing DYKs right now because I find the process very involved, and I'm trying to keep research/writing as the focus my Misplaced Pages hobby time. best, jengod (talk) 22:31, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

Barnstar

The Content Creativity Barnstar
For forking off Andrew Johnson's drunk vice-presidential inaugural address. One of the rare occasions where a Misplaced Pages article is natural comedy gold! — Daniel Case (talk) 05:46, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
@Daniel Case it's so so crazy, right? TY for the Barnstar! Always glad to hear the work is getting read. Best, jengod (talk) 06:36, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
It's one of those articles like Action Park (which I researched and wrote) that just winds up being funny by being itself. Do it a favor and don't submit it for any sort of recognition ... that way you can keep it the way it is! If you do, expect to see it on a lot of listicles all over the Internet (I will list it at unusual articles (which really ought to be titled "Articles about unusual subjects"). If it isn't there already).
The only thing that would make this story better would have been if Johnson had puked mid-speech (à la Dave Barry's take on how that famous (and completely fictional) story about Churchill and Bessie Braddock would have likely really turned out ("Madam, I may be drunk but BLEAAAAARRRRRGHHH!!! all over her shoes"). But then it wouldn't have lasted so long.
I'm going to have to read parts of this one out loud to my wife later (I really love the part where he knocks back not one, not two, but three table glasses of straight scotch, filled to the brim, before the speech. I wonder if anyone's ever tried to estimate how much his BAC would have been at the time). And share it with my family.
Someone really needs to make a movie of this ...
I hope Annie Rauwerda is also aware of this. She could certainly do something with it on her feed. Daniel Case (talk) 06:59, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
Don't worry about recognition seeking LOL I find that quite overwhelming and avoid it except for the rare foray into DYK. I didn't mean for it to get so long but there are so many parts I couldn't bear to cut. Anyway thanks again and, uh, cheers 🥂 😆 jengod (talk) 07:46, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

Fungus articles

Hi Jengod. I saw your article on Tricholoma yatesii – thanks for making articles on fungus species, there aren't too many around here who do that! Wanted to let you know for future creations, you might want to check out the status of the name on Index Fungorum. For this fungus, the current name is Melanoleuca yatesii (i.e., the genus in which Murrill originally placed it). I'm not sure why it's currently classified there in favor of Tricholoma; digging into the literature would be necessary to find out. MycoBank is another nomenclatural repository that can be used to check current name status, and it also gives Melanoleuca as the current genus. Hope this tip might be helpful for you going forward, have a good day! Esculenta (talk) 17:31, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

Thank you so much @Esculenta -- I'm a bumbling amateur so I will take every scrap of advice you can offer in hopes of not messing up Misplaced Pages. I mostly add fungi that I see pop up on the California mushrooms Facebook groups that we don't have yet. My man Alan Rockefeller called it T. yatesii and that's the name iNat had so that's what I went with but I will add Index Fungorum to my list of reference(s) to check regularly! jengod (talk) 17:38, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
P.S. I have inquired with the California mushroom people about top-secret name changes etc. jengod (talk) 17:49, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi Jengod,

The X/Twitter account @depthsofwiki has just featured several of the articles you've created and I really like the originality of the subjects! Just a message to thank you for all the work you do, looking forward to reading your next articles!

Oh my goodness. Thank you for the heads up and kind words Baidax I'm flattered slash mortified. Well...Happy Women's History Month to meeee!
  • Also I don't have a Twitter account any more but have to comment on someone's comment there: I didn't start Ciclovia in the United States properly. I moved it off Ciclovia because that page was goofy long and didn't credit properly because I was clueless. I'm sorrrrry! But also check out Muévete en Bici which got kicked into draftspace and I helped get it back out again. Yay bikes!!

Undefined sfn references in List of American slave traders

Hi, in List of American slave traders you use afn references to "Wilson 2009". Unfortunately no such source is listed. This means that nobody can look it up, and also that the article is placed in Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors. If you could supply the missing source it would be appreciated. DuncanHill (talk) 10:51, 8 March 2024 (UTC)

Thank you so much @DuncanHill. I think I fixed it now. I was switching back and forth between print and ebook publication years and breaking things. Thanks for the heads up. jengod (talk) 14:09, 8 March 2024 (UTC)

Merge Franklin & Armfield ships into a single article?

We got a number of articles on individual Franklin & Armfield brigs, but with the exception of the Uncas, for which there is luckily detailed academic coverage, a lot of them have fairly trivial individual information. What if we merged these (likely maintaining a separate article for the Uncas) into a single article titled "Franklin & Armfield slave ships" or something of that matter? This would also let us cover ships the company rented but didn't outright commission, like the United States. Would love to hear your thoughts. Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 01:51, 4 April 2024 (UTC)

@Generalissima Seems like a good idea to me. I was hoping the Ship People {gestures broadly toward the ocean} might be able to provide some secret ship sources I didn't know about but since no such sources have manifested, a combo page seems like a good plan. jengod (talk) 02:02, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
Nice! I really want to make a Franklin & Armfield good topic, and I think that'd be a nice addition. Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 02:05, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
Oh, one other thing; I've been making steady progress on a rewrite of Franklin's article at User:Generalissima/Isaac Franklin. Would love any thoughts on general layout and structure so far, as well as any good sources I haven't included! Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 02:11, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
It looks like you have great sources. I don't have anything to add except I'm fascinated by this map--it's the plantations that bc Angola Prison. I already put it on Adelia Acklen's page but just wanted to make sure you know it exists. File:Acklen - Panola Belle View Killarney Angola plantations Louisiana 1858.jpg Keep up the terrific work. jengod (talk) 03:57, 4 April 2024 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Animal attacks by taxon

Unbold link

Why is that? As I see the primary meaning is bold, see eg America_(disambiguation) - Altenmann >talk 17:39, 14 April 2024 (UTC)

I was probably wrong per policy. Revert if it suits I just think that links in bolded titles are the ugliest format thing on Misplaced Pages (both bolding and links are a form of "emphasis" and doubling up on that is garish and almost always unnecessary for getting the reader's attention and/or conveying meaning) and I have a long-standing campaign to make it stop. It looks like hell. But my personal opinion is irrelevant etc etc. Don't mind me. jengod (talk) 17:47, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
About bold links I agree. I was just curious. - Altenmann >talk 18:36, 14 April 2024 (UTC)

Hi JSFarman - I love you - I published a garbage draft live after publishing a sloppy list so Fram suggested I have autopatrol revoked and after a while I decided I quite prefer being patrolled. Re: Pineapple mania

Thank you for helping categorize Pineapple mania. It's missing a great deal of information about the connection between pineapple and the slave trade, and the influence of pineapple on southern states. Any help pointing me to sources or expanding it would be appreciated. Viriditas (talk) 21:26, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

@Viriditas I don't think I've seen any mention of pineapples in the slavery sources I've looked at but will definitely keep my eyes peeled. Cheers jengod (talk) 21:45, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
Thank you. There's apparently a certain university that specializes in research connecting the slave trade with pineapple, and there's a few researchers who have connected the dots with the overall phenomenon. I just haven't had a chance to examine that side of the topic just yet. Viriditas (talk) 22:02, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

Abbot Kinney Pier and User credits

Hi Jengod, I have removed the image credit on the above acticle again. MOS:CREDITS is very clear on why this is not needed or required as is WP:SIGNHERE which this is essentially a case of, and your comment about celebrating volunteerism/good work makes no sense, in that case every article should have a signature on every part of it.--Jac16888 12:31, 8 June 2024 (UTC)

@Jac16888 I'll leave it off I don't want to throw the project off balance bc it promotes egotism or something but also it says "Photograph credit: Alfred Buckham; restored by Adam Cuerden" on the front page right now. I'm not mentioning that to bust on anyone. Quite the opposite. Photo restoration is a skill I do not have and I think it's incredible and if photo credits are a way to honor that I would love to see more! jengod (talk) 14:27, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
