== Sobhuza II == | |||
So there was a discussion about whether Hassanal Bolkiah should be included in the sovereign states section, since his country was a British protectorate until 1984. People argue that based on that, he wouldn't qualify to be listed in that section until 2039. Fair enough, but there's another monarch that has a similar issue, but in reverse. The dependent or constituent states section lists Sobhuza II's entire 82 year reign at the top of the list. However, as pointed out in the entry itself, his country ceased to be a British protectorate in 1968, which means the last 14 years of his reign were of a sovereign country. So by the previous logic, should only the first 68 years of his reign be considered for the dependent monarch section, which would bump him considerably down the list? The closest thing it says on the matter is that the list contains monarchs who were "not internationally sovereign for most of their reign", but even then "most" could be interpreted to mean anything from "more than half of their reign" to "almost all of their reign". ] (]) 18:08, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
== Clean-Up == | |||
It has previously been seen that the first list had monarchs moved to the third list due to a lack of verifiable dates and and as such i think the same should happen with the second list. ]. ] (]) 18:29, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
:But the monarchs in the second list all have exact dates listed. Are you more saying these dates are incorrect? ] (]) 23:37, 4 May 2024 (UTC)
::I actually think it's more of that we need verifiable sources for their dates instead of just random dates from unreliable and blacklisted sources such as Royalark and Indianrajputs. Infact Muhammad II of Kedah was removed from the first list because no reliable source could be found for his exact dates and all. ] (]) 15:49, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

== New Longest Reigning Monarch? ==
I recently discovered this guy who apparently reigned between sometime in 1912 to 6 March 2001. This is about 89 years. I’m not sure about about the start date but the end date seems legitimate. Until a source for his exact start date is found he’ll probably stay in the third list. Should he be included?

Also even if they lost full powers, Nepal Monarchies still effectively continued to exist until 2008. Here's another source https://myrepublica.nagariknetwork.com/news/remembering-rishikesh-shaha-a-great-nepali-diplomat-of-all-time/

DO NOT INSERT Hassanal Bolkiah into independent ruler list until 2040
Brunei did not become an independent state until 1984. He therefore should not be on the list until 2040. Yourlocallordandsavior (talk) 00:06, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
- In a similar vein, how should Sobhuza II's reign be handled, since the last 14 years of his reign were of an independent country, yet his entire 83 year reign is listed in the non-sovereign section. Should it only include up to 1968 there? 2601:249:9301:D570:A58F:3494:CAD4:696F (talk) 01:25, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- From my interpretation, I would just combine the non-sovereign and sovereign reigns together and label it as non-sovereign. Just write it down that non-sovereign's the default and that if it exceeds 56 years of Conrad, then it belongs on both lists. Yourlocallordandsavior (talk) 02:11, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
- Personally, it seems inconsistent to combine sovereign and non-sovereign for one of the affected individuals, but not the other. 98.228.137.44 (talk) 22:02, 25 June 2024 (UTC)

Who would be next?
I did a brief search to find out who the next monarchs on the first list would be. If you know of any other monarch with a longer reign than those mentioned, you can add him.

- Amazing although what about Thutmose III and Nguyễn Hoàng. Also weren't Savoy and Tuscany apart of the Holy Roman Empire. S302921 (talk) 07:40, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the comment. I will add Thutmose III. As for Nguyễn Hoàng, it appears that he was a feudal lord within the Lê Dynasty.
- Italian states ceased to be part of the HRE at the Peace of Westphalia, in 1648. But thank you for Thutmose III.There are many Egyptian pharaohs, have I missed more? 177.91.168.2 (talk) 09:15, 17 August 2024 (UTC)

- Is the King of Spain Charles III, who ruled Spain for 29 years, and before that was the King of Naples and Sicily for another 25 years, considered? Андрій ЯЧ (talk) 23:20, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
- Андрій ЯЧ No, because his reign was over completely separate states, unlike somebody like Ferdinand III who still ruled over Sicily for about 65 years. S302921 (talk) 14:49, 13 December 2024 (UTC)

New Longest Reigning Monarch?
I recently discovered this guy who apparently reigned between sometime in 1912 to 6 March 2001. This is about 89 years. I’m not sure about about the start date but the end date seems legitimate. Until a source for his exact start date is found he’ll probably stay in the third list. Should he be included? https://web.archive.org/web/20180817011629/http://members.iinet.net.au/~royalty/states/nepal/bhirkot.html S302921 (talk) 18:49, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
Also even if they lost full powers, Nepal Monarchies still effectively continued to exist until 2008. Here's another source https://myrepublica.nagariknetwork.com/news/remembering-rishikesh-shaha-a-great-nepali-diplomat-of-all-time/ Please give me thoughts on this and i will add him. - I don’t think his state was sovereign as it seemed subordinate to the Kingdom of Nepal. But his name seems to have been Raja Tarak Bahadur Shah GoodDay. S302921 (talk) 19:12, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- He doesn't belong in the first section, then. GoodDay (talk) 19:12, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- Neither the second section since i couldn't find his exact start date but i do know it was sometime in 1912. Even a lower estimate would still place it way ahead of both Sobhuza II and Louis XIV. S302921 (talk) 19:14, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- With all of that should he be included? I am gonna let a few more editors decide before including him. S302921 (talk) 19:17, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- He doesn't belong in the top two sections. Louis XIV is still the longest reigned monarch of sovereign state. GoodDay (talk) 19:19, 1 November 2024 (UTC)

About Edit Warring
User:GoodDay User:Remsense since this is a literal list about LONGEST Reigns i feel like it would be best to add a monarch's longest reign so IMO Qianlong Emperor's de-facto reign should be counted. It is already for Maeda Tsunanori and Isa Bin Ali Al Khalifa in the Second Table. I also don't see a valid reason to remove the Monaco Note. 77.101.238.210 (talk) 21:14, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- I'll wait for Remsense to respond. My concern was stopping the back-and-forth editing. GoodDay (talk) 21:17, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- My concern is exactly the same, but unfortunately there's not much ability on my part to prevent disruption when the criteria just ain't that well defined. Maybe I should just take pages like these off my watchlist. Remsense ‥ 论 22:49, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- Then after all of this, would it be fine if i add back my edit? 77.101.238.210 (talk) 22:56, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- No, because you have no source that would make clear the Qianlong Emperor is being treated consistently with other figures listed. Remsense ‥ 论 22:58, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- User:Remsense it clearly states on his page about that fact "He reigned officially from 1735 until his abdication in 1796, but retained ultimate power subsequently until his death in 1799". 77.101.238.210 (talk) 08:13, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- Best to go with the reign (1735 to 1796) dates. GoodDay (talk) 16:52, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- User:GoodDay Then what about Maeda Tsunanori and Isa Bin Ali Al Khalifa who have their de-facto periods of reign counted in the second table? Also this is a list about the LONGEST REIGNS so it is best to include his de-facto period of rule. 77.101.238.210 (talk) 17:42, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- See Remsense' reasons for why your changes shouldn't be accepted. GoodDay (talk) 17:46, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- His reason is that I need a source, when it is literally listed on his very page that he abdicated in 1796 but maintained power until 1799. 77.101.238.210 (talk) 15:15, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
