Hello, Hog Farm. Just reaching out as you and I and User:Buidhe seem to be the only editors who have been granted theWikiChevrons with Oak Leaves so far this decade. It's a much more exclusive club these days, and I'm honored to share it with you. I've been interested in the US Civil War since I bought a deleted copy of "Terrible Swift Sword" around 1984. Thanks for your contributions. Now I have to go back to the 162nd Rifle Division.

    Cerro Panizos

Greetings, was wondering if you had time to do a pre-FAC checkup of Cerro Panizos, as I plan to send it to FAC after Hudson. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 08:15, 13 April 2024 (UTC)

Sure, I'll take a look. I've got several other things I need to finish up first though, so it'll be later this week or maybe even the weekend before I can get to that. Hog Farm Talk 13:19, 15 April 2024 (UTC)

    Aston Martin DB9 at FAC

Hi HF, could you possibly leave your comments on this FAC about the Aston Martin DB9? (This is my first nomination). The source and image review have both been concluded, so I think that, because this is my first, it will need quite a lot of supports. Thanks and best, and don't feel obliged to,  750h+ | Talk  13:46, 17 April 2024 (UTC)https://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=User_talk:Hog_Farm/Editnotice&action=edit&redlink=1

@750h+: - unfortunately I'm rather busy in real life right now and am fairly backlogged on things I've already promised people to review on-wiki, but I might be able to take a look at some point in the future. Hog Farm Talk 01:21, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
Okay, hope things get better, and thanks for the response.  750h+ | Talk  03:24, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
@Hog Farm: with the FAC where you said "Let me know when PCN02WPS finishes their review and I'll try to take a look.", PCN02WPS stated that their time might be a little limited, do you mind reviewing before PCN02WPS does?  750h+ | Talk  03:09, 26 April 2024 (UTC)

Thank you today for the article, introduced: "Mainly a ship vs. shore naval bombardment, there's not a whole lot to the battle itself, but it is inseparable from one of the most significant events in American military history: Grant's crossing of the Mississippi River during the Vicksburg campiagn." - I watch every TFA on the day, did you know? I have a rather sad story on the same page, - yesterday's was more fun. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:21, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

Congratulations! - Today's TFA, Felix M. Warburg House, was written by Vami_IV and Epicgenius, introduced: "This article is about another of the great houses that once lined Fifth Avenue in New York. Specifically, this is the mansion of Felix M. Warburg, a Jewish financier who ignored fears of anti-Semitic reprisal to his decided to build himself a big Gothic manor in the middle of New York City. Although the Warburgs no longer remain, their legacy does: the museum is now the home of the Jewish Museum (Manhattan) and the building largely survives as they left it. It's a beautiful building and I hope you will all enjoy it."! - in memory --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:14, 10 May 2024 (UTC)

    David McDermut

Hi, I came across David McDermut and was surprised to see how bare the article is, considering he is the namesake for two warships. Had a brief look to see what mentions there are on Google books, scholar, IA, etc, but found almost nothing. Would appreciate any input you might have on whether the man is even notable. Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 23:47, 1 June 2024 (UTC)

@Pickersgill-Cunliffe: - I'm inclined to think that McDermut isn't notable. This book covers his death, but that's about all I can find. There were a number of AFDs awhile back on similar people who had an article created mainly because they were the namesake of a warship; most of them ended in the article being merged into the warship's article if I recall correctly. A merge of a couple of sentences to the SIA article at USS McDermut seems to be the best case of action here. Hog Farm Talk 00:36, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
Have completed a merge/redirect. I find it strange that there are ship namesakes who aren't themselves notable. Not that usual I would think. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 13:15, 2 June 2024 (UTC)

Would you look over my shoulder?

I'm startled at recent contributions by a new user and my reversion was somewhat reflexive. I saw so much bad I acted quickly. Did I go too far? My good faith felt challenged a bit, per NOCONFEDs. BusterD (talk) 13:51, 16 June 2024 (UTC)

The more I look at their edits, the more I think that rollback is valid; see also this at Sam Houston was also pretty bad. Weaver family (North Carolina) is of doubtful notability. And there talk page discussion at Talk:Charley Crockett looks pretty blatantly like original research to me. I tend to suspect that their major edits are all a mess of original research, content problems, and the like. At a minimum they need to take a break from major content editing in the racial topic areas. Hog Farm Talk 14:14, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
The Houston edit caught my eye but I thought regular editing would work it out. I gave Weaver a look too and agree it's draftworthy at best. Thanks. I'm going to confront them directly myself and then post at a noticeboard depending on reaction. BusterD (talk) 14:20, 16 June 2024 (UTC)

    Battle of Shiloh

As info, might have an edit war at Battle of Shiloh. TwoScars (talk) 16:31, 9 July 2024 (UTC)

I have copies of Cunningham, Sword, Daniel, and McDonough's works on Shiloh at home. I'll try to write a compromise version that actually follows the sources when I get home, unless you think the whole thing is totally undue detail. Hog Farm Talk 18:21, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
@Hog Farm:, @Joseph A. Rose: I'm somewhat neutral on addition of information, but if done the changes and corresponding citations must agree. It is little additions with bad citations (if any) that caused the article to deteriorate from FA to C-Class. Now that it is back up to GA, I hope to keep it from deteriorating again. I believe Appler was cashiered—Cunningham says "Appler was dismissed" in the footnote at the bottom of his page 171. Why would more info about Appler (even his name) merit inclusion in a long article that already has 274 citations and 25 footnotes? It seems to me a better use of everyone's time would be for Joseph A. Rose to find a C-Class or B-Class military article and upgrade it to GA. For example, Battle of New Market is lucky to have a B-Class rating, has some controversy, and has importance—it would be great to have that fixed up. TwoScars (talk) 19:07, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
I tend to agree with the above - this sort of information is too detailed for a major article like this. Wiley Sword can include material like that because his work was a 300-400 page book, but this is suppose to be a summary article of the battle of Shiloh, so we don't have room for that level of detail. Misplaced Pages:Featured article candidates/Cerro Panizos/archive1

Greetings, since you took part in the review at Misplaced Pages:Featured article candidates/Mount Hudson/archive1 I was wondering if you had any thoughts on Misplaced Pages:Featured article candidates/Cerro Panizos/archive1, especially the disagreement between me and David Fuchs. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 08:26, 15 August 2024 (UTC)

I'll try to take a look since I did the pre-FAC review right now, but I've been really busy so I can't make any promises. Hog Farm Talk 12:20, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
Seems like it's moot now: Misplaced Pages:Featured article candidates/Cerro Panizos/archive1 was archived. I hope to renominate it but it probably needs some work beforehand. I am just not sure what. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 08:25, 28 August 2024 (UTC)

I can probably take a look if you like. What sort of copyedit are you looking for -- sentence level review, smoothing out, etc, or more structural? Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 21:36, 17 August 2024 (UTC)

Mike Christie - Thank you! I'm not really sure what is needed. SandyGeorgia remarked that I'm finding a bit more copyediting needs than I feel confident to tackle and I wasn't happy with the prose, and wanted fresh eyes. I'm pretty sure she watches this talk page and might be able to weigh in with what is needed. I think the prose issues were fairly pervasive. A lot of my articles need substantial prose work; I blame Missouri's rural public school system. Hog Farm Talk 23:20, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
Funny cause I grew up in Seattle, went to excellent schools etc. but I feel I never really learned to write well until I started editing (t · c) buidhe 23:32, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
I went to college thinking that "drownded" was a word ... Hog Farm Talk 23:57, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
I'd bet every FAC nominator could add their own examples. I agree that one learns more from editing prose than from writing it. I'm reading a novel at the moment in which at one point the two main characters debate the pleasures of writing vs. editing; and it's odd to realize how different the two skills are. That's presumably partly why it's so hard to edit one's own prose. (I once wrote a nine-word sentence in which the word "instead" was used twice, and couldn't see the problem with it even after someone said the sentence needed copyediting.) ACW Q for you

If you have any ideas about what "Brookhaven" might be in Samuel S. Boyd#American Civil War, I'd love to hear them! It sounds like an unpleasant stockade or prison somewhere in Mississippi/Louisiana but when I search I come up empty. Thought you might have some notion of where to look. Cheers. jengod (talk) 19:08, 1 October 2024 (UTC)

@Jengod: - I'm pretty stumped as well. Brookhaven, Mississippi might be a possibility? All I can come up with is that, with him being sent to Brookhaven in the sense of "If you like the Confederacy so much, go enjoy its hyperinflation, food shortages, and lack of political/military protection for your life and property". I really don't know; I can't come up with anything that doesn't lean heavily into original research/guesswork. Hog Farm Talk 02:28, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
@Hog Farm 1. LOL. 2. That seems like a very plausible theory but I think we will leave it to further ACW scholars and/or until some book serves it up when we're not looking. TY!!! jengod (talk) 02:36, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
Figured out that it's Brookhaven, Mississippi which had a railroad station on a defunct railroad we don't have an article for that later was amalgamated into Illinois Central Railroad. Unimportant just wanted to share for your mental files! Cheers jengod (talk) 04:11, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

Thank you today for Battle of Cane Hill, introduced: "This may seem familiar to those who reviewed Misplaced Pages:Featured article candidates/Battle of Van Buren/archive1 in 2022. Essentially, Confederate forces under Thomas C. Hindman made an abortive push into SW Missouri (see Misplaced Pages:Featured article candidates/First Battle of Newtonia/archive1) but fell back into Arkansas under Union pressure. Hindman tried again later than year in a campaign that had its first major action here at Cane Hill, met stalemate at the Battle of Prairie Grove, and then ended in the aforementioned Van Buren fiasco. Cane Hill itself was a running cavalry battle that stretched over miles of Arkansas forests and mountains."! - Happy Thanksgiving! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:20, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

There's a lot of ways Misplaced Pages doesn't understand or adequately accommodate individuals with personal experiences somewhat different than the norm on here, including self-described semi-Calvinist Ozarks hick. I was musing to Deepfriedokra the other day about how often adhering to Southern etiquette can lead to being misunderstood online. There's a lot more I could say about that, but for now I'll just leave you with this, from my kind of Southern heritage to yours. As I head off to see that side of the family for Christmas, wishing you a Merry Christmas as well. -- Tamzin (they|xe|🤷) 16:59, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
