Are you looking for help? Misplaced Pages can be confusing—but it doesn't have to be that way! What do you need help with? Are you new to Misplaced Pages? Please consider going through the Misplaced Pages Introduction, which will walk you through the basics of using and editing Misplaced Pages. You can also play The Misplaced Pages Adventure, a fun and interactive way of learning how to edit Misplaced Pages in less than an hour. Are you looking for an administrator? Administrators are trusted Misplaced Pages users who have been granted extra tools to help with the overall maintenance of the website. Although I am an administrator on the English Misplaced Pages, please see Misplaced Pages:Requests for administrator attention for most administrative requests. This way, other administrators can find the request more easily, and you're likely to get a faster response. Is there a Help Desk or customer service team I can contact? Misplaced Pages doesn't have a professional customer service team, as all editors are volunteers who help out in their spare time, not employees. However, we do have a place called the Teahouse, where friendly volunteers can help you with any issues you may have.

A user talk page is a page where you leave messages for a user. In this case, this is the user talk page for me—K6ka. You can use this page to contact me.

Think of a user talk page like a public email inbox. All messages need to have a Subject and a Body, and they should be written politely and formally (e.g. starting with a greeting and ending with "Thank you for your time"). When you post your message, it is public—everyone can see it, even though it was addressed to me. I will receive a notification when you leave me a message, and will try to respond to your message the next time I log in.

How to leave a new message for me

1. Select the New section button.
   The page editor will load.
2. In the "Subject:" field, enter the Subject of your message.
   A subject is your title, not your entire message! Be clear, concise, and short.
   Examples of bad titles: HELP ME!!!, Message, Hello, Question.
   Examples of good titles: Question regarding the Coffee article.
3. In the text box underneath the Subject: field, type the message you would like to leave for me.
4. Look over your message for any typos or mistakes.
5. When you are finished, add your signature to the end of your message.
   To do this, first move your text insertion cursor to the end of your message. Then, do any of the following:
   • In the editor toolbar, select the button.
   • Enter four tilde characters using your keyboard. This will look like the following: ~~~~.
     On a US keyboard, this is done by pressing the following key combinations four times: ⇧ Shift+`. Please see this chart for more information on how to type the tilde character.
6. Select Publish changes.
   A new thread will appear at the bottom of this talk page with your message.

How to respond to an existing thread

Threads are organized by their Subject. Subjects are written as a Level 2 heading—large text with a grey underline—along with an edit link. If you would like to reply to an existing thread, do the following:

1. In the thread you would like to reply to, select the edit link next to the thread's Subject.
2. In the editor, move your text insertion cursor to the bottom of the page.
3. Type your response.
4. When you are finished, add your signature to the end of your message.
   To do this, first move your text insertion cursor to the end of your message. Then, do any of the following:
   • In the editor toolbar, select the button.
   • Enter four tilde characters using your keyboard. This will look like the following: ~~~~.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here is a list of frequently asked questions I get, and their answers. Q: I am not logged in to Misplaced Pages, and I got a message from you saying that I vandalized an article that I didn't edit. What's going on?A: No need to panic! Misplaced Pages uses your IP address to identify you when you are not logged in. IP addresses may be shared between multiple users, or be reassigned to different users periodically. For example, if you are at school or a coffee shop, the IP address you are using is shared by everyone using the Internet there.The message you received was intended for someone who had previously used the IP address you are currently using. If you did not vandalize Misplaced Pages, you can safely ignore the message. If you get these kinds of messages frequently, you may want to consider creating an account and logging in to it. That way, any messages you get will actually be intended for you, rather than someone else who used your IP address. Q: I am not logged into Misplaced Pages, and I can't edit because you have blocked me. What do I do?A: See the above: you are probably on a shared IP address, and someone before you was editing Misplaced Pages inappropriately. Shared IP addresses are usually blocked from editing for long periods of time to prevent abuse. The good news is that you can usually still edit if you log in. If you don't have an account, and cannot create one because of the block, you can request an account. Q: You reverted one of my edits. Why is that?A: Unless I'm reverting vandalism, I usually provide an explanation for my reverts, either in my edit summary, or in a message on your user talk page. There are many reasons for reverting an edit, and each case has its own reason. If you're still not sure why I reverted your edit, you can ask me on this talk page. Weekly highlight

• The Single User Login system is being updated over the next few months. This is the system which allows users to fill out the login form on one Wikimedia site and get logged in on all others at the same time. It needs to be updated because of the ways that browsers are increasingly restricting cross-domain cookies. To accommodate these restrictions, login and account creation pages will move to a central domain, but it will still appear to the user as if they are on the originating wiki. The updated code will be enabled this week for users on test wikis. This change is planned to roll out to all users during February and March. See the SUL3 project page for more details and a timeline.

Updates for editors

• On wikis with PageAssessments installed, you can now filter search results to pages in a given WikiProject by using the inproject: keyword. (These wikis: Arabic Misplaced Pages, English Misplaced Pages, English Wikivoyage, French Misplaced Pages, Hungarian Misplaced Pages, Nepali Misplaced Pages, Turkish Misplaced Pages, Chinese Misplaced Pages)
• One new wiki has been created: a Misplaced Pages in Tigre (w:tig:)
• View all 35 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, there was a bug with updating a user's edit-count after making a rollback edit, which is now fixed.

Updates for technical contributors

• Wikimedia REST API users, such as bot operators and tool maintainers, may be affected by ongoing upgrades. Starting the week of January 13, we will begin rerouting some page content endpoints from RESTbase to the newer MediaWiki REST API endpoints for all wiki projects. This change was previously available on testwiki and should not affect existing functionality, but active users of the impacted endpoints may raise issues directly to the MediaWiki Interfaces Team in Phabricator if they arise.
• Toolforge tool maintainers can now share their feedback on Toolforge UI, an initiative to provide a web platform that allows creating and managing Toolforge tools through a graphic interface, in addition to existing command-line workflows. This project aims to streamline active maintainers’ tasks, as well as make registration and deployment processes more accessible for new tool creators. The initiative is still at a very early stage, and the Cloud Services team is in the process of collecting feedback from the Toolforge community to help shape the solution to their needs. • For tool and library developers who use the OAuth system: The identity endpoint used for OAuth 1 and OAuth 2 returned a JSON object with an integer in its sub field, which was incorrect (the field must always be a string). This has been fixed; the fix will be deployed to Wikimedia wikis on the week of January 13.
• Many wikis currently use Cite CSS to render custom footnote markers in Parsoid output. Starting January 20 these rules will be disabled, but the developers ask you to not clean up your MediaWiki:Common.css until February 20 to avoid issues during the migration. Your wikis might experience some small changes to footnote markers in Visual Editor and when using experimental Parsoid read mode, but if there are changes these are expected to bring the rendering in line with the legacy parser output.

• The next meeting in the series of Wikimedia Foundation Community Conversations with the Wikimedia Commons community will take place on January 15 at 8:00 UTC and at 16:00 UTC. The topic of this call is defining the priorities in tool investment for Commons. Contributors from all wikis, especially users who are maintaining tools for Commons, are welcome to attend.
