] have the ability to "protect" pages or images such that they cannot be modified except by other admins. This ability is only to be used in limited circumstances.

This is a list of resources available that list pages that are ''']''', ''']''' or '''].
==Policy==
# Do not edit a temporarily protected page except to add a protected page notice.
# Do not protect a page on which you are involved in an edit dispute.

To request that a page be protected or unprotected, see ].
See ] for more detailed advice and the purpose of protected pages.
<!--Pages must be protected and unprotected by ]. -->

* ''']''' - automatic list
==Procedure==
*:Also see ] - indefinitely or permanently protected pages, specifically maintenance templates and high-exposure Misplaced Pages pages
# Protect the page, supplying a reason.
# Add <nowiki>{{protected}}</nowiki> (or <nowiki>{{vprotected}}</nowiki> for vandalism) to the top of the temporarily protected page and make mention of the protection in the edit summary.
# List pages you protect on ''Misplaced Pages:Protected page''; if it is protected due to a conflict, you may want to list ''all'' user names/IPs involved in the conflict.
#: Please use '''<nowiki>{{article|ARTICLE NAME}}</nowiki>''' when listing a page at ''Misplaced Pages:Protected page'', where '''ARTICLE NAME''' is the article or page you wish to protect.
# Consider encouraging a resolution between the disputing parties.
# Remove the protection (while supplying a reason) once the conflict has been resolved.
# Remove <nowiki>{{protected}}</nowiki> from the top of an unprotected page and make mention of the removal in the edit summary.

* ''']''' - automatic list of pages protected against creation.

*:Also see ] which uses cascading protection and ] which protects by mask.
* ] - place to request protection; use when your involvement in editing a page precludes protecting it yourself. Also used by non-administrators who wish for a page to be protected.
* ] - automated log of protections and unprotections
* ]
* ]
* ] - please add pages subjected to repeated vandalism to this list
* ] - essay
* ] - semi-humorous essay about revert warriors' perception of page protection

]
== Rationale ==
See ], ]

]
== Viewing the source of a protected page ==
To view the source of e.g. ], use one of the following:

*{{SERVER}}{{localurl:Main_Page|action=edit}}
*]

The latter also gives ] (see ]) about the last edit. It is an ] file; tags are coded in its source, and plainly shown when rendered by the browser. However, blank lines in the wikisource are shown in the xml-source, but not in the rendering.

== List of protected pages ==
If you protect a page, or find a protected page not listed here, please add it to this list. Please also add a '''short''' description of ten words or less indicating why you protected it. If you need to say more, discuss on the talk page of the page you protected. Also see the ] for recent unprotections, which replaces the manual list of recently unprotected pages. The <nowiki>{{protected}}</nowiki> header automatically adds ] to the page, adding it to the Category's listing.

I unprotected all these because Netoholic is now being mentored. User:Tony_Sidaway, 10 May 2005, 18:32 UTC.

* A flock of templates over which a long-standing edit war has been waged, one which has been to ] ] ], with no apparent positive affect from a 3RR block. (I didn't put a {protected} notice on these because they show up on so many pages; ditto for adding the Category, it would cause all the articles this template uses to show up in the category too.) ] ] 12:46, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

*** One of the users involved in the edit war just posted this on my talk page: ''For my part, I intend to revert them to the correct version'' (sic - JNC) ''the moment they are unprotected''. So I suggest we leave them protected until this disagreement is resolved. The templates are fine (if any changes are needed an admin can apply them), so there's no need for them to be editable. The argument is just over whether or not to use a meta-template. ] ] 17:10, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
****I have a problem with the version that was chosen for protected status for each of these templates. On each one of these, the protection was implemented while ]'s version was in place. As the edit summary shows, virtually all of the edit conflict was in fact generated by Netoholic himself, due to his insistence that meta-templates not be used despite the rejection of that proposal as policy. To protect his version of the page only encourages such behavior. There are literally over a dozen reverts by Netoholic on each of these pages. This user wants to dictate policy to the Misplaced Pages community despite a lack of consensus, an act for which he has been twice called in front of Arbcom. In my opinion, if protection is to be implemented, the protected version should reflect community consensus. Currently, Netoholic is being allowed to get his way by throwing a temper tantrum. ] 05:44, 4 May 2005 (UTC)

===Images protected while on the ]===
Images on the main page often become the target of vandalism, particularly being overwritten with ] images, which harms the credibility of the project due to that page's extreme visibility. Also, it takes some time for sysops to determine what caused a main page change. As such, images have begun to be protected during their time there, and this has become a ] policy since the second or third week of November 2004.

In order to keep track of these images, please add <nowiki>{{</nowiki>]<nowiki>}}</nowiki> to them. This will add the image to ]. There are typically 4 to 5 images on the main page, although some of them may be from the ].

===Permanently/semi-permanently protected pages and images===

===Pages protected due to deletion bugs===
Most pages in ] have been protected for technical reasons and will be deleted when the MediaWiki software gets updated. There is no requirement to list all pages from that category here, although you may add particularly troublesome cases (re-creation vandalism of pending deletion pages etc.) to this list:
