Anime Detour hosts the following events each year at the convention, as well as various guest and fan hosted panels. There is also a designated space for taking group pictures.

* Music video contest - attendees submit their ]s to be judged. A second contest is also held, awarding prizes for the worst AMVs.
* The second contest is not of just the worst AMVs like most think it is. It was originally put in because of in the first contest their was an AMV that made the judges go "what was this person thinking?" It became known as the WTF contest or otherwise known as the Whiskey Tentacle Foxtrot Contest. You can guess what it could also be called just from the initials.
* Video Rooms - Running various anime from different time periods throughout the convention (24 hours a day).
* Cosplay Contest - Standard to most anime conventions, in which attendees are judged on presentation and workmanship of their costumes.
* Art Show/Auction
* Charity - An charity auction is held each year to benefit the ].
* ConSuite - Offers soda, coffee, tea, fruit, rice, and other snacks.
* Dance Sims - A Pump it Up/Bemani room featuring ], ], ], ], ], and other ]-style games.
* Console Gaming Room - including various console games.
* Tabletop Gaming Room - featuring card games, board games, and other non-electronic games.
* Dealer's Room - includes various dealers selling anime/japan-related merchandise.

The convention and its parent company Anime Twin Cities, inc held a fundraiser for voice actress Carrie Savage in 2013, to help with costs due to muscular dystrophy. Anime Detour and its parent company Anime Twin Cities created a fundraiser for voice actor Christopher Ayres in late 2017, to help with his COPD medical costs. The convention moved to a larger location in Minneapolis for 2018. Anime Detour 2020 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Anime Detour 2021 was also cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
