'''''Smash Hits''''' was the first compilation album released by ] in ] in the UK and ] in the US. Containing nothing but the band's biggest successes, both editions of the albums have proven to be long and popular sellers.

'''''Smash Hits''''' is a compilation album by ]. ] first issued it on April 12, 1968, in the UK and included all four of the group's singles (both A and B sides) released up to that time, plus four additional songs from the UK edition of '']''.
The UK version first appeared in ] ], only 4 months after the band's second studio album, '']'', and while they were working on their third. Containing their first 4 UK singles (and their respective B-sides) in addition to 4 standout tracks from '']'', ''Smash Hits'' became exactly that - a #5 album in the UK and one that had a long chart life. It also marked the first appearance on album of "Burning of the Midnight Lamp", 5 months ahead of its placement on '']''.

] did not issue the album in the US until July 30, 1969, with some different tracks. It included two songs from '']'' and three tracks from the UK edition of ''Are You Experienced'', which were previously unreleased in the US (including a stereo version of "]" from a different take than the original mono album version).
In the US, however, things were done a little differently. Jimi's then-record label, ], felt that a greatest hits collection was far too premature and waited until mid-] (and, coincidentally, the break-up of the band once ] suddenly quit) to issue a different version of the same album. Now with '']'' in the mix, there was more to choose from. There were also tracks that had been elbowed off of the UK edition of ''Are You Experienced'' in ] to make way for "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze" and "The Wind Cries Mary". As a result, the US version of ''Smash Hits'' - which reached #6 in its territory - is more balanced and more representative of the band's career. However, the UK edition is the only Hendrix album where you can find the mono mix of the rare 1967 B-Side "Stars That Play With Laughing Sam's Dice".

''Smash Hits'' has been reissued several times on CD; however, it has been largely superseded by more recent and comprehensive compilations, such as '']'' (1997).

Neither the UK or US edition of ''Smash Hits'' contain any songs from '']''.

Smash Hits is a compilation album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Track Records first issued it on April 12, 1968, in the UK and included all four of the group's singles (both A and B sides) released up to that time, plus four additional songs from the UK edition of Are You Experienced.

Reprise Records did not issue the album in the US until July 30, 1969, with some different tracks. It included two songs from Electric Ladyland and three tracks from the UK edition of Are You Experienced, which were previously unreleased in the US (including a stereo version of "Red House" from a different take than the original mono album version).

Smash Hits has been reissued several times on CD; however, it has been largely superseded by more recent and comprehensive compilations, such as Experience Hendrix: The Best of Jimi Hendrix (1997).

Neither the UK or US edition of Smash Hits contain any songs from Axis: Bold as Love.

In a review for AllMusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine gave the album four and a half out of five stars. He notes "the main strength of Smash Hits is that it contains the best-known big-name songs in one place. Maybe not enough to make the collection essential, but still enough to make it a representative, accurate sampler".

Robert Christgau included the album in his "Basic Record Library" of 1950s and 1960s recordings, published in Christgau's Record Guide: Rock Albums of the Seventies (1981).
