'''To list a template for deletion, follow this three-step process:''' ''(replace ''TemplateName'' with the name of the template to be deleted &mdash; '''do not include''' the namepace identifier "Template:")''

&nbsp; Enter the following text in the '''top''' of the template or inside the box (where applicable): <br clear=all>
: '''<nowiki>{{tfd|TemplateName}}</nowiki>'''
Please include "tfd" or similar in the edit summary, and don't mark the edit as minor.
Also, try to minimise page disruption, by using the Preview button to check the revised template, as its new look will be visible on all pages that use it. Do '''not''' blank the template.

&nbsp; You willl have to create a section on the ] page, under the subheading for 'today's date' (]). You may have to create the heading for today's date.
Add this text to the section, '''at the top''':
: '''<nowiki>==== ]====</nowiki>
: '''<nowiki>'''</nowiki>''Your vote''<nowiki>''': </nowiki>''Your reason for nominating the template''<nowiki> ~~~~</nowiki>'''
Suggest what action should be taken for the template.

&nbsp; Add <nowiki>{{subst:tfdnotice|TemplateName}}</nowiki> on relevant talk pages, which will create a section, warning other editors.

Also consider adding to your watchlist any articles you nominate for TfD. This will help ensure that your TfD tag is not removed by a vandal.

== Deletion criteria ==
Deletion of templates may be appropriate if the template does not conform to the following.
* Templates should be helpful and noteworthy;
* Templates should not be redundant;
* Templates should be used (note however that the opposite cannot be concluded from the absence of backlinks, it may be used with "subst:";
* Templates should not be ];
* Templates should not generally be used within other templates - see ].

If you want a template changed or reworded, or its layout changed, please discuss that on the template's talk page rather than listing it for deletion here.

If a template is part of (the functioning of) a ], the template can not be listed for deletion on TfD ''separately'', the template should be discussed where the discussion for that guideline is taking place.

== Voting and discussion ==
Anyone can vote, but please ''give a reason'' when doing so. Please explain how, in your opinion, the Template does not meet the criteria above. Comments such as "I like it," or "I find it useful," while potentially true, generally do not fulfill this requirement. It also helps if you '''Bold''' your actual vote (i.e. '''Keep''' or '''Delete''').

Nominating stub templates for deletion should instead be done at the new process ]. Templates that reside in userspace should instead be nominated on the regular ] page, but please note that Misplaced Pages is very lenient about userspace. Templates that reside in mainspace should also go on ], and Misplaced Pages is ''not'' very lenient about those.

===Examples of votes===
* '''Keep'''
* '''Delete'''
* '''Convert to category''' (categorify); to indicate that you feel that all pages containing this (article series box) template should be moved into a single category. The template can then be deleted.
* '''Convert to list''' (listify); to indicate that you feel that all pages containing this (article series box) template should be moved into a single list. The template can then be deleted.
* '''Redirect''' redirect to more popular or fitting title.
* '''Rewrite''' suggests that the template serves a purpose (thus should be kept), and that it could do this more elegantly.
* '''Retitle / rename / move'''; usually for offensive, overly lengthy, or otherwise poorly chosen titles.
* '''Userfy''' suggests that the template should be moved to a user's subpage. Used for personal templates.
* '''Subst:''' single-use templates can be replaced by the template values by using the ''subst:'' parameter in the template (e.g. <nowiki>{{subst:templatename}}</nowiki>). Then the template can be '''deleted'''.
*'''BJAODN''' Copy to ] before deletion.

===Closing===
Debates can be closed after seven days of discussion, at which point they are archived, and the template listed for further processing (e.g. orphaning/deleting, rewriting, or removing its TFD template if kept). Because of backlogs, the page may sometimes hold older discussions.

As on ], the discussion is the most important part, as it serves to show consensus. The votes are a means to this end. In terms of votes, at least a two-thirds majority is required to delete a template. However, it is possible that the arguments given during discussion overrides this principle - especially if, halfway through the vote, an important argument was made and the votes made later take that argument into account (e.g. a vote pattern such as ''del del del del '''argument''' keep'').

Rewriting, renaming and conversion to category or list are not considered forms of deletion since no information is lost, and thus can pass with a lower amount of support. Indeed, if five people vote to keep and one votes to rename, it may make good sense to rename the template unless some of the other voters explicitly objected to that.

This process relies on the discretion and common sense of the user closing a debate, generally an admin. If you disagree with a decision, please discuss it with that user.
