Just a comment on your edit description - I think you are right that the particular image has US fluid ounces, which are therefore not imperial, but imperial certainly does have "fluid ounces": one fluid ounce is the volume of water weighing one ounce. Greetings! You're right, there is no hard and fast rule. I've never seen the 85% figure tossed around (who's said that?); I like to compare it to the "roughly 80%" figure that holds on RfA, which seems to be accepted. I'm not a hard-and-fast vote-counter (actually, I hate voting: ]), but I do take the numbers into consideration, and 78% is well within the realm of admin discretion. It is subjective and inconsistent because there's just no way to make it otherwise without opening ourselves up to a labyrinthine system of rules on whose votes to count and whether to give more weight to stronger arguments; better to rely on the judgment of people whom the community has expressed trust in and call them on it if a decision was made in error. I thought the numbers justified it and the case wasn't terribly strong for keeping; therefore, delete. ] ] 20:44, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
:I hate the name "votes for deletion" because it does imply that it's a vote, a strict head-count; I agree that it should be renamed, which has been suggested at several points in the past but never acted upon. That's one of the big problems with the process. I don't know what else to do to increase participation; we must expect that anyone who's been around for more than a few weeks knows about VfD (as it happens, many discover it on their first day!) and just does not care to make the decisions. Very few discussions, anywhere on the wiki, attract even 50 people: a small fraction of regular editors; the only thing I can say is that people gravitate to issues that interest them and must let the others slide. (I never peek my head in at Templates for Deletion unless one I watch/otherwise care about gets nominated, for example; I only have so much time and I just don't have that much interest in them.) It's not that any decision that generates vocal opposition must be blocked. It's just that there must be rather good reason for going against it. Simple numerical majority is not sufficient. Consensus does make effecting more than trivial changes a slow process. But it also means that no one can ram something through simply by outshouting the opposition and attracting a slight majority. (In theory, anyway.) ] ] 23:04, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

:Well, now I see @] has made the issue moot by making the page into a section redirect. I'm still curious as to why you think it's not notable, but I don't suppose it matters. ] (]) 20:54, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
:: Hi, if the topic turns out to be notable, please feel free to revert my edit; it could be a mistake on my part. From my research however, I saw isotropic manifolds mostly discussed in the context of symplectic manifolds, i.e., in a physics context, so thought to redirect there, where the term was at least verifiable in GBooks and GScholar as being used. If there are multiple in-depth math sources that discuss isotropic manifolds as a topic themselves, those could be used to source the content of the article and would provide notability per ]. All I saw in the math context were quick definitions of isotropy in a larger discussion of manifolds, and not much more. That would be enough verifiability for a short definition in say a manifold article, but not enough depth for a standalone article. --
{{u|]}} {]}
02:27, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
:::I feel pretty sure the subject ''is'' notable, though I'm open to correction from @] on that. But a subject can be notable without being big enough to deserve its own Misplaced Pages page. So your approach works for now. I'll leave it to somebody with some actual expertise to decide if that's the right direction.
:::I should explain that my expertise is nil. I'm only involved because back in 2005 there was a badly-written page called "Isotropic" that I tried to make go away by splitting out its contents into new pages like this one. So I'll leave it the experts to chart the future course of the page. ] (]) 03:25, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

Comment on Imperial units‎

Just a comment on your edit description - I think you are right that the particular image has US fluid ounces, which are therefore not imperial, but imperial certainly does have "fluid ounces": one fluid ounce is the volume of water weighing one ounce. (Which makes a lot more sense than the American version...) Imaginatorium (talk) 15:08, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

Peculiar edit

Follow me to join the secret cabal!

Plip!

Hi! I noticed this edit to USS Olympia (C-6) that claimed the ship is currently in Olympia, Washington. This is untrue; the ship is in Philadelphia. For this little mistake, I am minnowing you. Please take this as a lighthearted response to this simple mistake. ~ Pbritti (talk) 02:50, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

Isotropic manifold

Proposed deletion of Isotropic manifold

Notice

The article Isotropic manifold has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not notable

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Rgdboer (talk) 22:36, 13 July 2024 (UTC)

I don't have any strong opinions about keeping the article. But before I can let a "noncontroversial" delete go ahead, I need to hear why you think the topic isn't notable. Isaac Rabinovitch (talk) 00:02, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
Well, now I see @Mark viking has made the issue moot by making the page into a section redirect. I'm still curious as to why you think it's not notable, but I don't suppose it matters. Isaac Rabinovitch (talk) 20:54, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
Hi, if the topic turns out to be notable, please feel free to revert my edit; it could be a mistake on my part. From my research however, I saw isotropic manifolds mostly discussed in the context of symplectic manifolds, i.e., in a physics context, so thought to redirect there, where the term was at least verifiable in GBooks and GScholar as being used. If there are multiple in-depth math sources that discuss isotropic manifolds as a topic themselves, those could be used to source the content of the article and would provide notability per WP:GNG. All I saw in the math context were quick definitions of isotropy in a larger discussion of manifolds, and not much more. That would be enough verifiability for a short definition in say a manifold article, but not enough depth for a standalone article. --{{u|Mark viking}} {Talk} 02:27, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
I feel pretty sure the subject is notable, though I'm open to correction from @Rgdboer on that. But a subject can be notable without being big enough to deserve its own Misplaced Pages page. So your approach works for now. I'll leave it to somebody with some actual expertise to decide if that's the right direction.
I should explain that my expertise is nil. I'm only involved because back in 2005 there was a badly-written page called "Isotropic" that I tried to make go away by splitting out its contents into new pages like this one. So I'll leave it the experts to chart the future course of the page. Isaac Rabinovitch (talk) 03:25, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
