GtkRadiant originated as Q3Radiant, the '']'' level design tool, which was a ]-only application. Two major things are different in GtkRadiant: it is based on the ] toolkit, so it also works in ] and ], and it's also ]-independent, with functionality for new games added as game packs.

GtkRadiant is a "semi-]" application. ] is publicly available from id Software's ] repository and new additions to the code are covered under ]s. The core of the original Q3Radiant code, however, is proprietary, under id Software's license. Currently GtkRadiant ] prohibits its use for commercial projects without id Software's permission. This may change later due to the fact that Q3Radiant was included when ''Quake III Arena'' itself was ]ed.
